## What is Alarum?

Alarum is a gentle, easy-to-read alarm clock: the screen and flashlight brighten like a sunrise while your sound fades up. It's ad-free and tracking-free, with a card-like interface where a swipe is all it takes to undo.

Free to use, with a one-time unlock (or yearly subscription) for the extras. If you bought Alarum when it was a paid app, everything is already unlocked.

Swipe left to queue up the next alarm, or swipe right to return to the previous one. As long as an alarm’s time hasn’t passed, you can turn it on or off with a swipe.

Snoozes are just more alarms you can swipe on or off. Swipe to ignore a snooze and queue up the next alarm. Want to go back to snoozing? Just swipe it back on.

I’ve focused on an alarm clock’s core purpose and tried to limit extra features. So it has…

…Alarms:
• One-time alarms, or repeating on the days of the week you choose
• Repeating alarms can skip holidays you choose (US-centric)
• Tap anywhere to snooze for as many minutes as you set
• Sounds fade up over however many seconds you’d like
• 16 environment sound loops, or a random one from your preferred sounds
• Or the built-in iPhone ringtones (including the Classics), five colors of noise, or songs, albums and playlists from Apple Music
• Favorite songs, albums and playlists so they float to the top
• The screen and flashlight can brighten before the sound, poorly imitating a sunrise
• Alarms hold their wall-clock time: 8:00am is 8:00am wherever you are, and through Daylight Saving Time
• On iOS 26 and later, alarms sound through Apple’s AlarmKit even when the app is closed or the phone is locked (the gentle fade and sunrise need the app open)

…Sleep Timers:
• Quickly set one using the previous settings
• The same sounds as Alarms, including Apple Music
• Optionally fade out from the halfway point to the end
• Swipe it away to stop it, or swipe it back to continue

…Clock:
• Show as little as the hour and minute, or add Seconds, AM/PM or 24-hour time, Weekday, Month and Date, Year, or the current Temperature colored for what you consider hot or cold
• Rotate to landscape for a full-screen bedside clock that defaults to light on dark and dims with a swipe
• The display brightens a little at dawn so it’s readable once light gets into the room
• Double tap the clock to brighten it for a quick check in the dark

…Other:
• A midnight flashlight that turns off when you rotate to landscape
• A unique, simple and easy-to-read font
• 7 color themes with matching app icons
• Layouts for iPhone, iPhone Duo, and iPad
• A daily hint (you can turn them off)

…Unlocking Features:
Alarum is free to download and use with time only, one alarm or sleep timer at a time, with environment sounds, ringtones and noise. A one-time In-App Purchase or a yearly subscription unlocks all the other features. The subscription renews automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Apple Music songs need an Apple Music subscription and, if they're streamed, a connection when the alarm goes off.

• No fancy pictures, traffic or news
• No sleep tracking or sleep reminders
• No calendar integration
• No games or puzzles to solve to turn it off
• No ads
• No pestering, just Apple’s standard rating request now and then
• No personal information collected
• No metrics collected*
• No information sent to the developer or any third party*
*(Alarum only talks to Apple: Apple Weather for Temperature (using your location, and only if you turn it on), Apple Music for music, and the App Store for purchases. Apple may collect information under its own privacy policy, outside my control.)

Alarum is just a nice alarm clock designed to wake you up gently.

### 1/5 — Funktioniert nicht

*2026-08-23*

Für 0,99 kann man nur einen Alarm einstellen, selbst der ertönt aber nicht.

### 1/5 — Ripoff

*2025-02-27*

I did purchased this alarm for the reason that I can make multiple set of alarm unfortunately you are only allowed to set up just one alarm per day. You can make a multiple set up of alarm by making another purchase for 3.99 ! It’s a ripoff!!!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 20261020.02 — 2026-10-21

Major Updates:
        • iOS 27 compatibility.

        • Support for iPhone Duo: completely redesigned for both closed and open in both orientations as well as half folded.

        • iPad use now uses the Duo layouts for more square windows. Windowing is supported with the layout switching to iPhone style when tall and narrow.

        • Reliable Background Alarms: On iOS 26 and later, Alarum now schedules a backstop through Apple's new AlarmKit so your alarm reliably sounds even when the app is closed or your phone is locked — with your chosen sound.
            - Snooze and Stop work right from the lock screen.
            - Snoozing creates a fresh alarm just like it does in the app, so Alarum stays the single source of truth for your alarms.
            - Because this uses the system alarm, Alarum will now ask for alarm permission (see Permission Cards below).

        • Rebuilt Music Favorites: You can now favorite what you love and have it float to the top when choosing a sound.
            - Favorite individual songs across both your Library and Apple Music.
            - Favorite whole albums from the new Albums tab.
            - Favorite playlists (tap the heart below Shuffle).
            - The picker now shows your current selection.
            - If Apple Music is unavailable or a song won't stream, the alarm gracefully falls back to a Nature sound so you're never left without an alarm.

        • Permission Cards: Alarum no longer asks for everything at launch. Permissions are now requested one at a time on cards in the deck, with a short intro card and clearer explanations of what each one is for and why. When the last card clears, you're handed straight to a Hint.

      Other updates:
        • Changed: Alarms now hold their wall-clock time. An alarm set for 8:00am goes off at 8:00am wherever you are and through Daylight Saving Time changes. Repeating alarms and snoozes now advance by calendar day rather than a fixed number of seconds.

        • Added: Turning an alarm OFF now takes a confirming tap so you can't disable it by accident.

        • Added: A Feedback section in About to email me with issues or suggestions, or to rate Alarum on the App Store.

        • Fixed: Repeating alarms now correctly generate their next occurrence the moment they're created.

        • Fixed: Sound picker taps are reliable again on the new OS, with cleaner selection and icons.

        • Fixed: Screen staying dark, and hardware brightness not being restored, when quickly exiting right after launch or rotating.

        • Changed: The keyboard "Done" control is now a low-profile key that sits in the keyboard instead of a floating button.

        • Changed: Smoother, snappier card-swipe landing.

        • Fixed: Weather divide-by-zero and a handful of other stability and crash guards.

        • A large under-the-hood cleanup for the new OS: removed old Combine and dead code, moved audio activation off the main thread, hardened alarm fire timing, and added tests around the alarm engine.

### 20250918.1 — 2025-09-20

Fixed: Delay of clock appearing when returning to the main screen from another view.

Fixed: Audio ramp up was delaying if a Delay Sound was selected in the Settings even if Sunrise is not selected.

Fixed: No matter if Sunrise or Delay Sound is selected or not, the delay will be ignored when the app is not active and the alarm is playing as a notification.

Fixed: The screen would flash orange (full Sunrise) when swiping away a card if Sunrise is not selected.

Fixed: Audio ramps up as a bacground sound when the app is not active but a notification was getting suppressed by that. The notification is now activated separately so the ramping up audio remains.

Fixed: Re-opening the app would reset the active card to the first even if the use had selected a different card on last use.

Fixed: Offset positioning issues in Landscape.

Fixed: Some screens didn't use the custom font correctly.

Added: Customized the audio playback controls when not in the app.

Added: Return button to Landscape that remains visible even when cards are hidden so you know if you inadvertently shifted to a future card when you didn’t intend to.

Added: All new Liquid Glass Icons.

Changed: Moving most of the secondary views to sheets with system style buttons for visual continuity with the new Liquid Glass style.

### 20250422.01 — 2025-04-23

• Fix: Swipe and card movement animations adjusted to be more pleasent.

        • Fix: Repeating alarms now automatically generates the next two on creation preventing next alarm geneation issues

### 20250416.01 — 2025-04-17

• Change: Surrounding buttons now fade from view after 30 seconds and return when there is movement detected

• Change: Onboarding has been updated with a new dismiss button on every page, now explains more about how to use the app, and has new imagery updated to match current iPhones

• Change: Buttons at the bottom of the portrait view have been rearranged and all the buttons have been tweeked for correct display at different screen zooms

• Change: Buttons fade out after 10 seconds and return when there is a tap or movement of the device

• Added: A help button has been added to the top of the portrait view to redisplay the onboarding pages

• Fix: Location is sometimes denied on relaunch, also you can tripple tap on the tep if it is erroring to force it to refresh

• Fix: Next Song button was sending to Previous instead of Next

• Fix: Changed how Daylight Saving Time is handled so alarms set before a time change aren't wrong after

• Fix: Stopped pop in sound when Sleep Timer ends

• Fix: Unpause for non-music now correct

• Fix: Airplay now working correctly

• Change: Leaving the app while sound is playing now maintains the volume from the app

• Fix: Restores correctly to landscape if the phone is in landscape by changing how orintation is determined

• Fix: Better accounting for zoomed displays

• Fix: Return button no longer blocked by cards

• General layout adjustments

### 20241212.01 — 2024-12-13

Major Updates:
        • Current Temperature: Added current temperature as an option for the clock
            - Choose Fahrenheit or Celsius
            - Option to colorize it for what you consider Hot or Cold
            - Alarum uses Apple location services and Apple Weather to provide this
            - This means Alarum now needs location permission to give the correct temperature

        • In-App Purchases: Alarm is now free with In-App purchase to unlock more advanced features
            - Choose between a yearly subscription or a one-time purchase
            - The addition of Temperature means that I have a limited number of free Weather Requests before being charged per additional request potentially resulting in additional inccured costs on my end

       Other updates:
        • Updated code to address issues with system volume working with app volume
            - Now saves the volume on launch and restores on exit or at the completion of an alarm or sleep timer but doesn't overwrite it otherwise
            - Fixed some issues with pops in volume

        • Sleep Timer fixes
            - Fixed multiple sound stops for sleep timer
            - Fixed overlapping sounds for Sleep Timer if replacinf one sleep timer with another of a different type of sound.
            - Fixed starting and stopping sounds that aren't music with the Sleep Timer by tapping the card
            - Fixed stopping the sound and resetting Sunrise if it's currently playing and the Alarm or Sleep Timer is deleted from the Alarm List view
            - Included Sleep Timers in the Alarm List view for easier deleting
            - Fixed Sleep Timer sounds re-ramping up when swiping between cards
            - Made a created Sleep Timer the active card even if it's not left most
            - Made sure any previous Sleep Timer is deleted when making a new one

        • Fixed Music in Playlists not defaulting to the top of the list of songs

        • Fixed keyboard dismissal by tapping anywhere

        • Rebuilt TextFields with custom versions to help with initial load times with partial success

        • Rebuilt volume setting text fields and sliders to work better and interactively

        • Rebuilt Apple Music code including a new Apple Music Search that has Songs and Albums tabs

        • Removed triple tap for voice as you can use Siri to hear the time, it was uncancelable so if don't in the middle of the night can be annoying, and I don't think anyone was using this.

        • Reduced the sensitivity of dragging to dim

        • Added: Automatically brightens the display a little at dawn and darkens at dusk (This is because I like to have it barely visable while I'm sleeping, but that is too dark to see once any amount of light gets in the room in the morning.)

        • Updated Privacy Disclosures to account for collecting location information

        • Defaults changed to shorter ramp up and no delay for the sound

        • General code cleanup
