I can tell that the app was thoughtfully designed, but it seemed that each audio segment needed to download on site, and connectivity was not reliable. In any case, it may be simpler to just use the provided device. ### 2/5 — DONT DONWLOAD *2022-06-05, version 1.3.2* They give you a audio device to listen too at the tour for free. Being wired earbuds for it and if not you can hold it to your ear ### 2/5 — Don’t bother *2022-05-17, version 1.3.2* I didn’t have headphones with me and the audio wouldn’t play unless my phone was “next to my ear,” but even against my ear it was finicky at best. Just use the audio player provided for free ### 2/5 — Great idea; flawed execution *2022-04-13, version 1.3.2* The idea of this is great, but the execution is seriously flawed. I stood outsides and downloaded the app, then waited for the initial content to download, but that only for me through the first part of the of the tour. Then it tries to download more content, but the WiFi they provide barely works, if you have signal at all, and the cell signal is also weak to non-existent. That means the tour stops and you are left trying to find a signal to download. It really needs to download the entire audio content at the beginning and confirm that so that once you start the tour you’re not left waiting for more content to download. For now, just save yourself the pain and take one of their devices. ### 3/5 — Good intention, poor execution *2021-10-24, version 1.2.0* The concept of the app is great but the app itself is rather raw. It’s great that you can avoid using the audio device they provide, especially during the Covid times, but I’d suggest still getting the device if you want good experience. One issue with the app is it seems to download the audio files as you go from point to point so if the connection isn’t there, you’ll have issues with the app working. And there are plenty of spots where the connection - both WiFi they provide and cell, is very poor. Another issue is you can’t seem to change from one chapter to another without being next to the needed place. Why? I hope the devs continue to improve the app and it becomes something that can replace the audio device! ### 1/5 — Alcatraz was cool *2021-09-05, version 1.2.0* But the soundtrack on the audio tour was pretty bad. No donda ### 4/5 — Great tour, but poor design choices gave us some trouble *2021-06-30, version 1.2.0* We visited Alcatraz on the tail end of the COVID pandemic, when they were still limiting use of the usual audio devices. The phone app really is a nice solution. I made sure everyone in my group brought headphones and downloaded the app ahead of time. The audio quality sounded great and the tour was very immersive. My one complaint? It was a little tricky figuring out where to start the tour. There was a very specific area to start it where there were staff and signage to tell you, but that could have been made clearer. We got into the cell house and just assumed the staff was missing, not realizing we were in a queue for where the tour actually starts. And if you start it early the app actually goes out of its way to prevent you from restarting it or going backwards. Why? What is this trying to prevent? Fortunately it’s pretty easy to get around this just by deleting and re-installing the app which wipes out the data it stores on your device to enforce this. But as those of us in the industry like to say, that’s just a bad UX (“user experience”). ### 5/5 — Great Alcatraz Experience *2020-09-09, version 1.0* I had a great experience on Alcatraz taking an outdoor audio tour, learning about the island’s fascinating history. It is put together expertly, it is narrated by experienced island historians, it is engaging, and most of all, it is relevant. Each historic chapter has a tie-in to present day.
