### 1/5 — Plan 9 From Outer Space

*2014-03-07*

Even the other reviews can't prepare one for the awful reality. Clearly no testing was done and the features were hallucinated during a 3-day drunk. The party responsible for this application purports to be in the communication business. Mind boggling. I can't begin to understand how The Birmingham News has sunk so low.

### 1/5 — Horrible update

*2014-03-03*

Why, why, why? Why change a functional app for this piece of crap? I have found nothing positive about this update.

* You can't see numerous stories at a glance. The layout only let's you see just a few stories and you constantly have to scroll.
* Sometimes you need to scroll down to see more - sometimes you scroll to the right.
* Too many gray boxes without photos.
* Too many photos are improperly cropped when used as thumbnails.

The list goes on and on.

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE UPDATE!!!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Opinions

*2016-11-12*

The app is great. The reporting of the news is not. I like facts based news and the articles written here are opinions that many times read like a fiction book. Clete W is the worst. He even explained to the readers that Clinton won the election before the first votes were cast.
Garbage like that should be omitted from any type of news and put in the opinion section.

### 1/5 — Constant crashes

*2016-10-08*

I don't know if it is due to iOS 10 or the iPad Pro, but media on the app is currently useless.

If one considers the fact that the app doesn't discharge old media and grows its storage footprint ad infinitum to be a problem as I do, then the glitch I experience isn't a bad thing; the app crashes every time I attempt to view any embedded media. Therefore, it can't accumulate old data. Maybe the crashing in iOS 10/iPad Pro 9.7 is a bug fix rather than a glitch.

### 1/5 — Not usable

*2014-08-13*

Navigating is frustrating and overcrowded with ads. I'm primarily interested in garage sales so when I opened this app and searched for garage sales, I got a ridiculously brief description. Clicking on MORE had the full ad, but navigating back to all listings was slow because the screen refresh was jerky and often moved back 2 pages. So then I had to go forward 2 pages again then scroll down to where I thought I left off. You get the idea - amateurish at best. I'll be deleting when I see that this review is posted so others won't waste their time.

### 1/5 — Less pics, more news

*2014-04-23*

I am a huge news fan but your iPad format has caused me to look for other state/local news providers in a friendlier format. Landscape of course (how did you miss that before launch?) but almost as important .... more "clickable" news story lines and LESS PICTURES. I can only see 6 stories on one screen at a time. Of course I know I can scroll/slide ... but the whole idea of a good user app (to me) is speed and being able to access the stories I want with the fewest selections. And your picture format limits that to 6 at a time.

Also wish you would rethink having the top line as videos. The titles don't even explain what the video is about. I encourage you to find your niche ... which I would prefer to be the written article with SOME picture/video options. The local TV stations can do the "all video" format. You all should focus on your strengths.

Please consider these ideas.

### 1/5 — The ABSOLUTE WORST

*2014-04-07*

This app is worthless. Links and shares are basically impossible. They say they want to be social media-centric, but the end up frustrating their users and cheating the slave labor they call staff writers. A big "F" to the creators of this piece of garbage. Maybe this is all by design so they can fold this 'news' outlet into some regional outlet.

### 1/5 — On excessive bowl with VoiceOver...

*2014-03-28*

The links to the articles can be read but the article itself cannot be read with voice over. In case you were wondering, voiceover is an embedded screenreader for the blind community in the Apple world. We are like any other person in Birmingham wanting news about our community as well. Lastly, we will appreciate the developers in fixing these accessibility barriers and your next version.

### 1/5 — Ruined a good news app.....

*2014-03-22*

The designer of this new layout needs some change management training- change without adding value has no value. I'm giving this one star only because it isn't possible to rate something "zero" stars.

Maybe I'm getting old, but why fix what isn't broken. I don't care for the new format, no good for viewing an iPad with no landscape view. The sidebar navigation doesn't work near as well for me as the top pulldown menus.

Whover designed this new layout must have liked the eye appeal but they certainly didn't try to navigate to find specific news-alot more difficult to find a specific area of interest. Won't be using the app. Looking elsewhere for my news as an expat Alabamian.....

### 1/5 — Quite possibly the worst app ever

*2014-03-12*

If there were negative stars this app would get them. The previous version was excellent. This version is just plain bad, really bad. No horizontal view, news stories in a category frequently won't display, and it's just not user friendly.

How could someone actually release something this bad thinking it was market ready?!!

### 1/5 — 0 stars

*2014-03-10*

They didn't even try with this update unless they were trying to make it harder to use. It's hard to navigate, poorly designed, and doesn't even work in landscape! Please change back to the previous design that actually worked and allowed me to easily read the news.

### 1/5 — What did you do?

*2014-03-09*

This ruined what was an easy to use app. I upgraded, tried to use it for 5 Minutes and went straight to the reviews. This is difficult to navigate and does not flow well at all. Are you trying to be more like a TV app? Please bring back the old version or daily delivery.

## Most praised reviews (8 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Get your news fix

*2016-08-30*

A great source to stay up to date on what's happening in Alabama.

### 5/5 — Up to date

*2016-07-22*

I enjoy being able to get at the moment reports.

### 5/5 — Great

*2016-07-14*

Material that keeps me coming back, thank you guys for putting relevant information out there.

### 5/5 — Best News Source

*2016-05-18*

Great app for current news. App works well and the writers are excellent. John Archibald's writing is always informative and entertaining.

### 4/5 — Easy to use

*2016-08-14*

I like the new app. Easy to get to the articles that I want to read quickly.

### 4/5 — New version is user friendly

*2016-05-25*

Continues to improve

### 3/5 — A no ad version?

*2016-06-25*

Maybe it would be great to pay for a subscription and not have any ads

### 2/5 — Good but not enough

*2014-04-08*

This new version is better than the older one in appearance, ease of use, and integration. I like being able to see comments and the ads look a lot better. But there should be some features that aren't available like horizontal viewing, the ability to get a direct link to an article for text messages and other communication, and, the slide shows don't view very well. Over all it's a good app but it could definitely be improved.
