The game apps simply doesn’t open at all. ### 3/5 — Mountain Goats Joy and Frustration *2025-04-17, version 0.61.2* I love Mountain Goats. I’ve gifted several copies to friends and several others have purchased it themselves as a result of me introducing it to them. Finding it as an app was fantastic, especially as it’s presently free. It’s a beautiful rendition (which would have got 5 stars) let down by one very frustrating aspect - the dice selection. For me the way you select the dice seems a bit clunky but more than that the main issue is that when you select a die (very tricky as the die are so small) you frequently end up dragging the screen instead so that you end up seeing the system page showing the brightness/volume. In every game I must do this at least 1 in every 3 die touches. I can see why they chose it, but trying to play the game whilst stationary is tricky enough but in a moving vehicle (eg commuter train) is frustrating as hell and I would strongly recommend a pivot to pressing the mountain numbers before confirmation as a die selection method. A great game hampered by just one part of its implementation. ### 3/5 — Mountain goats *2025-04-17, version 0.61.2* Game is fine, but I had to look up rules online. Also, moving dice to the top row would activate my notification menu on the iPhone which was very annoying. ### 3/5 — Message from Stars weak *2025-04-04, version 0.61.2* The helper app for "A Message from the Stars" is not good. The sections for Trust, Amplify, and Suspicion letters should be more visually obvious. They're in columns, which isn't the natural inclination for people entering info. There are thin lines indicating the grouping, but it could be made more obvious. Also, the rules have limits to the use of Green, Black, and Red letters but the app doesn't enforce or even indicate when these rules aren't followed. You can enter 'E' in every slot ('E' is a common, or Green, letter) but the game won't even highlight or indicate this. ### 2/5 — No sound? *2022-06-17* I don’t know if it’s just me but there are no sounds from the app. My phone is not on silent, volume is all the way up, and the speakers work for other apps. There is no gear sign within the app to adjust settings for sound, and no settings menu so I don’t think there is sound even though the game is about a band doing music concert tours? It seems like a missed opportunity. Like even indie artists would be interesting with a link to their album on the apple music store. There should be dice sounds and an option for dice animation/sound. No sound effects at all. This is definitely a weird app and it doesn’t make me want to purchase the full version at all. ### 2/5 — Tutorial insufficient to teach game *2022-06-11, version 0.13.7* There are many UI controls and game situations that aren't covered in the tutorial, and there is no actual rules section. Even if you have played the physical game there's no parallel. Developers need to add a rules and controls choice in the menu. ### 3/5 — Duplicate numbers? *2021-09-05, version 0.13.7* Quite a nice implementation of the board game. However in my first game, it gave me duplicate rolls on two different occasions. If I recall, this is not supposed to happen. So the good game I had going was ruined because it made me place 45 and 54, even though I already had those numbers on the board. Otherwise, like someone else said, it would be fun to plot your own route at the end instead of having it done automatically. It feels kind of cheesy when the CPU finds one worth more points than you were planning. ### 2/5 — Experiencing odd problem on iPhone *2020-06-23, version 0.13.7* Whenever I try to join a game, if the code has the letter “J” in it my phone changes it to an “I”, and because of this I can’t play with my friends. This only happens in this application. Can’t even figure out how to get started on this game. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Terrible UI *2025-10-14, version 0.68.4* There are no instructions on how to use the user interface for Mountain Goats and it is not at all intuitive. It seems impossible to control which dice you are grouping together. The camera angle is also terrible, makes the game difficult to see, and can’t be moved. I own the physical game and would be willing to pay for an app that actually worked…but this one doesn’t. ### 1/5 — How is this a game?? *2023-04-23, version 0.13.7* Very dull and dry. No animations, nothing to make it interesting or engaging. No dice or card flip animations. I know… its a trivial thing, a minor gripe but I HATE “silent” apps. Digital board games should convey a sense of the physical board game. This one game fails in this regard. I’m surpised the app shows dice at all. Very cheaply made. I like the GAME concept… and if it ever goes on sale, I’d get the physical game. Looks FAR more interesting to play than this digital simpleton. One thing this digital game should do at the end is to allow you to submit your chosen route, overlayed with the “optimal” route. They wont always be the same and would be interesting to see how close your chosen route matches with the optimal route. Oh well, glad I tried it but I’ll probably never play this digital app again. Great GAME concept, poor/boring digital implementation. ### 1/5 — Made phone hot, drains battery *2021-08-23, version 0.13.7* I’m deleting this game immediately. It made my iPhone 12 on iOS 14 super hot and drained the battery fast. No way should a simple roll and write game do this, the programming is obviously not optimized. I do not recommend buying this game. I wish I didn’t waste the money. I will never buy from this developer again. Good job guys! I read the in-game Tutorial. Now someone please teach me to play. Having played hundreds of other board games including Welcome To and Twilight Struggle doesn't help make this make sense from the tutorial. There is NO sound even when dice are supposedly rolled. Even with the latest updates, it's still single-player. Needing codes to join a multiplayer game? What is this, 1995? Let me know when you have added real multiplayer options. Specifically, the on-screen keyboard covers up the entry field. By itself this wouldn’t be a big issue, but the cursor jumps around in the entry field, so that the characters are filled in the order 1-3-4-2-7-5-8-6 instead of the expected sequential order. ### 4/5 — Awesome! *2020-02-21, version 0.9.2* This is a solid implementation of a great roll and write game. I’ve spent many hours with it. I would *really* like it if it would to allow me to listen to music or podcasts while I’m playing, though. I had a 🌠 on both Nebraska & South Dakota(Both with a circle around said states). Instead of the AI connecting them to make my route 1 state more and worth an extra 2pnts it connected Nebraska to Wyoming making me down 2pnts from what I should of had. 🤷‍♂️.
