Almond is a small but fairly comprehensive music terminology reference for iOS and Apple Watch. It lists over 1500 terms with some 200 illustrations and is designed to deliver short, concise definitions ideal for a watch app. Music terminology is often confusing to beginners as well as advanced students or even teachers due to the melange of languages used. While one score may have remarks in German the next piece could be annotated in Italian or French. Thus in addition to most common phrases also standard French, Italian and German terms are included. Almond is not limited to classical music and includes many terms from contemporary music styles like Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop as well as modern music production. Best of all - Almond includes a fully featured Apple Watch app, so one can have an entire music terminology reference right on the wrist. Most often the main description and inline illustration are available directly on the main screen. Tapping an entry displays the details view that often contains additional information regarding a specific term. To widen a definition Almond also features convenient links to Google and Wikipedia which can be accessed through the buttons in the toolbar. These buttons are "pre-loaded" with the current search term and will launch Safari with the results for the search term in either Google Defines or Wikipedia. This three-step access allows quick access to data even if not connected to the internet or when data transfer needs to be kept to a minimum and only takes one additional tap to access the full resources of the internet to do a deep search for a specific musical term. Almond for Apple Watch is a near full realization of its companion iOS app. This is also where the app is most useful. It includes the full set of musical terms, cross-referencing and all images. It loads in 3 screens to allow for faster searching: an alphabetic index, search terms as per letter and finally the definition screen. For example, look up the key signature for A major. There is a nice picture of a treble clef and there sharps, F#, C#, and G#. But then Almond goes on to claim that the parallel minor is F-sharp minor… oops! I think they meant “relative” minor. Look up the definition for Relative Minor and you get “the major key whose tonic lies a minor third above its own” definition… no mention of them having the same key signature! Over all, it is a good idea for an app, however the errors are annoying and should be corrected. ### 1/5 — Not worth your money or time *2011-08-01* After using this app for about a year, it started to breakdown on me. I had to delete it recently b/c it was useless. A waist of space and money. ### 2/5 — A good idea for beginners, not professionals *2010-12-18* This is a good app for people for beginning theory. But the more theory you know, the less useful it is. I am a professional composer and what I was looking for was a music dictionary with full definitions of terms and possibly even examples. I was disappointed with this app, and annoyed that I paid 2 bucks for it. Look up augmented 6th chord and see for yourself an example of how thorough the definition is. ### 5/5 — Awesome!!! *2009-12-23* Great little app for musicians! ### 4/5 — About Almond *2009-01-23* Nobody has really left any feedback, so I thought I might. Almond is an excellent pocket guide to music. Anyone in a music theory class should deffinately look into this, it's proven very helpful in my class. But there're just random words that aren't listed in here. The creators could really look into making sure this data base has as much as possible, and not leave the consumer without their desired definition, and 5$ poorer. Another feature that would absolutely make this product nearly flawless, is a search engine in which you could not only type the word, but the definition itself , and the word your looking for will come up. I if that feature were added, then u have no complaints, excellent product for any studying musician. P.S. I agree, Almond is kind of a cool name, very original, but also extremely Misleading. I found this APP on accident!! ### 4/5 — A good start, but plenty of room for improvement *2008-11-16* I decided to go ahead and give Almond a try, despite the lack of reviews. I feel like I got my money's worth with the program, but there's certainly a lot of room for improvement here. What I like: * Almond includes a good range of musical terms. * The definitions are clear and concise. They don't go into a huge amount of detail, but there's enough there to satisfy. * Links to Google and Wikipedia from each definition make it easy to delve deeper. * The interface is clean and easy to use. * The illustrations are a nice addition. What I'd like to see changed/improved: * The full definitions are placed halfway down the screen. Because of this, if you set the font size to medium or large, on longer definitions you end up with a scrollable box that's both annoying and flawed in its implementation. This really needs to be fixed. * More and larger illustrations. * An integrated mini-browser, so you don't have to leave the app in order to view the Wikipedia entries. * Sound! This app would be so much better if it included sound. That's the whole benefit of having a software-based music dictionary - you can include sound to illustrate the terms. If the developers added sound to this, I'd happily pay three times the current price. I also wonder whether the name and program icon deter potential buyers. I'm sure many people have no idea this is a musical dictionary and pass it by when browsing the App Store. ### 5/5 — Useful App *2008-11-16* Nicely done app. Useful to have in a rehearsal when your part says "Giocoso assai".
