About
Reading an analog clock is one of the hardest skills a child meets before school - and one of the few you cannot learn from a picture. Alphabet of Time lets your child grab the hands and move them, hearing the time spoken aloud at every step.
SIX LESSONS, IN THE RIGHT ORDER
1. Meet the Clock - the dial, the big hand and the small hand.
2. Whole Hours - one o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock.
3. Half Hour - half past, and why the small hand sits between numbers.
4. Quarter Hour - quarter past and quarter to.
5. 5-Minute Intervals - reading the minute hand around the whole dial.
6. Telling Time Correctly - putting it all together, out loud.
Each lesson tracks progress, so you always see where your child stopped and what comes next.
FOUR MINI-GAMES
- What time is it? - read the clock, pick the right answer.
- Set the time - drag the hands to the time you hear.
- Find the time - spot the clock that matches.
- Where's more? - compare two clocks and choose the later one.
FREE PRACTICE
A dial with no tasks and no timer. Your child moves the hands and the app names the time - useful for a first meeting with the clock, and for children who just want to explore.
SEASONS AND TIMES OF DAY
Time is more than a dial, so the app also covers the wider picture:
- Four seasons - spring, summer, autumn and winter, each with illustrations and a short spoken description of what changes in nature. Choose a season yourself or let the app follow the calendar - it even works for the southern hemisphere.
- Five times of day - dawn, morning, day, evening and night, tied to what actually happens then: waking up, going to kindergarten, dinner with the family, sleep. The day parts follow sunrise and sunset for your time zone, with no location permission needed.
WHY PARENTS CHOOSE IT
- Interactive, not passive. The child moves the hands and sees the result immediately. Books and flashcards cannot do that.
- Clear voiceover. Every hour, minute and description is read aloud, in English, German, Ukrainian and Russian.
- Gradual difficulty. Whole hours before quarters, quarters before five-minute intervals. Nothing is skipped.
- Built-in hints. First-time tutorials explain each exercise, so a child can play without an adult next to them.
- Clear, large controls. Designed for small fingers, with no menus to get lost in.
WHAT IT DEVELOPS
- Understanding of an abstract concept, expressed through a concrete object
- Logical thinking and sequencing
- Fine motor skills, through dragging the clock hands
- Memory, reinforced by hearing and seeing at the same time
- School readiness - telling time is part of the first and second grade curriculum
AGES
Best for children aged 5 to 9. Younger children can start with Free Practice, seasons and times of day; older children usually go straight to the five-minute intervals.
ABOUT ADS AND PURCHASES
The app is free and shows occasional ads between screens. If you prefer a fully ad-free experience, a single one-time purchase removes them permanently. There is no subscription and no paywall on the lessons - every lesson, mini-game and practice mode is available from the start. Optional tips for the developer are available too; they unlock nothing.
LANGUAGES
English, German, Ukrainian, Russian - interface and voiceover.
Teaching a child to tell time takes a few weeks of short sessions. Alphabet of Time turns those sessions into something your child asks for.
