## What is Altkata?

Altkata helps you learn alternative investments through short, focused study sessions you can finish every day. It's a general-purpose alts learning tool, not exam-prep software — if you're sitting for the CAIA exams, the curriculum overlap helps you prepare as a side effect.

How it works
• Atomic exercises — each one tests a single concept (a definition, a regulatory threshold, a calculation).
• The app grades every answer — unlike paper flashcards where you decide if you got it right, Altkata checks each response against an authoritative key. You see whether you're right, the correct answer, and a one-line explanation.
• Spaced repetition — the FSRS algorithm schedules each card so you review it just before you'd forget it.
• Daily, bounded sessions — finish your due reviews and a small batch of new cards, then the app stops. No infinite scroll, no streaks-as-pressure.
• Optional hands-free mode — nothing is spoken or recorded until you tap Start hands-free on a card. Then Altkata reads each exercise aloud, listens for your spoken answer, and keeps going while your phone is in your pocket or the screen is locked.
• Optional iCloud sync — pick up on iPad or Mac where you left off on iPhone, if you want. Local-only is a first-class mode.

What's covered
1,728 exercises across 54 topics in the foundations of alternative investments — accounting and financial-statement fundamentals, private equity, hedge funds, real estate, infrastructure, commodities, structured products, digital assets (blockchains, Bitcoin, stablecoins, DeFi), manager selection, due diligence, AML and investor onboarding, and the regulatory and tax frameworks that govern them. The CAIA Level I body of knowledge is one reference point, complemented by foundational primers in accounting, statistics, economics, and fixed income that teach each prerequisite before it's needed.

Privacy
This app sends no data anywhere except your own iCloud (when iCloud is available). If you use the in-app Report Issue screen, it opens a prefilled email you review and send yourself; nothing leaves your device unless you send it. Crash and diagnostic reports go through Apple's standard, anonymized channel and reach only the developer.

No accounts. No third-party SDKs. No analytics. No ads. No tracking. The app does not phone home.

Affiliation
Altkata is independent and not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the CAIA Association.
Altkata is an independent personal project by Jayson Virissimo and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any employer.

Platforms
Universal app — runs natively on iPhone, iPad, and Mac (Apple silicon).

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.0 — 2026-10-26

Altkata 2.0 rebuilds the app on a shared learning engine, with the same 1,728 atomic exercises across 54 topics and all of your progress carried over.

• Start hands-free with one tap on any card — no Settings detour
• Hands-free sessions show on the Lock Screen with play and pause
• Voice answers are recognized more reliably, with a longer pause before grading
• New voice commands: say "slower" to hear a prompt again at a slower pace
• With Voice output on, cards are read aloud while you type: the prompt, each hint, and the answer with its explanation, then on to the next card
• On the Mac, Return submits your answer, Return again moves to the next card, and Return on an empty answer counts as "I don't know"
• Numbers in prompts are spoken exactly as written
• Reporting a card now includes what the app heard, so misheard answers get fixed faster
• Your review history and schedules migrate automatically; nothing is deleted

What's different: each topic now has a single Include switch instead of separate review and new switches, keyboard shortcuts live in the Session menu, and "Defer this card" has been retired.

### 1.3 — 2026-07-27

Version 1.3 sharpens hands-free study and expands the curriculum.

• 44 new exercises — European fund regimes, deeper J-curve coverage, distribution waterfalls, and the denominator effect.
• More accurate voice grading, and financial abbreviations are spoken more clearly.
• Clearer prompts, with plain-language units on numeric questions.

### 1.2 — 2026-06-25

Version 1.2 makes hands-free study reliable and easy to find, with new content and a faster, sturdier app.

• Hands-free, front and center — voice study is now a clear option in Settings (still off by default). It reads each exercise aloud, listens for your answer, and keeps going with the screen locked, with progress and play/pause on the Lock Screen.
• Steadier voice sessions — Bluetooth headsets keep working mid-session, speech recognition runs on-device, and tricky terms like EBITDA, dollar amounts, formulas, and legal citations such as 3(c)(7) are spoken correctly.
• More to study — three new topics (accounting foundations, financial-statement analysis, and adviser conduct & fiduciary duty), 100+ new exercises, plus accuracy fixes and quicker, more resilient launches.

### 1.1 — 2026-06-17

This update adds spoken narration, two new foundation topics, and a batch of hands-free and Mac refinements.

• Natural-voice narration for hands-free mode — prompts, hints, and the correct answer are now read in a clear bundled voice instead of the built-in system speech. Still off by default; turn on Read prompts aloud in Settings.
• Two new foundation topics — Banking Foundations and Fixed-Income Foundations — plus additional cards across private equity, private credit, and regulation.
• Hands-free improvements: the exact correct answer is read back in feedback, voice control phrases are more reliable, AirPods and other Bluetooth headsets keep working when connected mid-session, and tricky terms (calendar years, legal citations like 3(c)(7), FinCEN, REITs) are pronounced correctly.
• Mac: new menu-bar Session commands and keyboard shortcuts — including ⌘⇧H to reveal a hint — plus a sensible default window size you can resize.
• Dozens of content accuracy and wording refinements, with more accepted answer variants.
