### 2/5 — Good idea, terrible app

*2026-05-16, version 2.3.1*

App is not good , it contains several bugs

### 3/5 — Solve it plz

*2019-01-28, version 2.2.4*

The problem with this app is that it's not like the book. The cd of the book reads all the details while on this app u just see some important sections of the lessons with audio...

### 2/5 — Can’t hear sound

*2018-12-14*

I can not hear sounds. The problem didn’t happen iOS 12.1. After starting record button, then sounds come out. Could you check this bug? I love your apps.

### 2/5 — Always frozen

*2017-08-28*

Most of the times you try opening the subtitles on this program, they won't open. This needs to be fixed period!!

### 2/5 — Good, but needs to be updated to work

*2017-01-24*

Starting the recorder crashes the app all the time.

### 3/5 — Needs better user interface

*2015-10-20*

For the concepts, it covers them well. There are three things that made me not rate it better:
1. It doesn't include Spanish in the Nationality Guides.
2. There is no option to bookmark your last lesson. Every time you access the app, you need to remember where you left in your previous session
3. In some lessons, information about the lesson is overlapped by the controls, and you need to juggle around to see the last part of the content

### 2/5 — Overgeneralizations and missing many key elements

*2015-02-06, version 2.1*

American Accent looks very promising at the beginning. It appears to cover many features of English pronunciation and to provide multiple opportunities for practice. After going through all of the models, I found the experience to be very disorganized. At times it felt like this app was created out of a hodge podge of pre-existing materials that have been re-packaged into an app. Many modules do not even focus on the main topic of American accent or English pronunciation.

As a pronunciation trainer, I found many descriptions to be overgeneralizations. Some sections went into great detail, but then lacked common terminology in the field of teaching pronunciation (or even from other materials on accent training and even accent training for the stage that I have seen). While I had high hopes at the beginning for ample opportunities to listen and record my voice, as I went further through the app I found that recordings were rushed and I had trouble repeating the sample words or phrases before the speaker started the next word or phrase. This will surely frustrate learners who will certainly be much slower than I am at recording their voices.

With a price of $9.99, I was expecting a much more polished end product. Essentially what you get are paired down modules culled from Ann Cook’s book American Accent Training, and many of these modules were so shortened that they felt incomplete. I also felt like I never became “familiar” with the app and how it worked. The technical issues of it freezing and crashing also did not contribute to the experience. From my professional perspective I was most disappointed with the content. While I can tell that a lot of time and experience has gone into the creation of these materials, the content appears to be informed more by intuition, experience, and tricks that may have worked for some learners than by an extensive knowledge of features of English pronunciation. In summary, the materials are not pedagogically sound.

If I compare these materials to the dozens of published pronunciation textbooks I have on my shelf, this app really miss the mark through its omission of phrase stress and rhythm. Knowing which word in a phrase to highlight (last content word, contrasting information, etc.) and how to mark this word (or syllable) is crucial to intelligibility and acquiring a good American accent. And using a stress-timed rhythm is a commonly cited feature of American pronunciation (and issues with rhythm often cause problems with intelligibility). Sadly, this app omits these critical features as key topics. For an app that advertises itself in the iTunes store as allowing you to “start with the most basic intonation patterns and go through to the most advanced levels in English,” I found too many of the basic features of pronunciation or accent training missing. If you are looking for an app that will really help you with the critical features of English pronunciation and an American accent, you will need to look elsewhere.

See my full posting about this app on my blog “Today’s English in the World.”

### 3/5 — The tape is different from the contents

*2013-08-21, version 2.1*

The tape is different from the contents in the very beginning.
Could you make updates?
Thanks!

### 1/5 — Careful! Not for everyone!

*2012-10-07*

This app is pure for folks that have a terrible accent and need the absolute basics. If you've been in the US for a long time with a decent accent and you want to improve it, this app is useless. There should be more clarity, since this was $10 wasted for me.

The amount of content is also very small.

### 4/5 — Really a great app to help improve your accent!

*2012-09-12*

This is the best app that I can find so far on the internet to help improve my American accent. But it's still not good enough. Firstly, several audio clips are not consistent with the text in version 2.0. Secondly it doesn't teach me how to say a long sentence with multiple nouns and verbs in which case I don't know which word should be strengthen. It talked so little about phrasing that I still don't know how to phrase a very long sentence. Anyway, I'll keep practicing and wait for another new release.

### 1/5 — the bad update

*2012-09-04, version 2.0*

the new update is worse!font is too small and recorder does not change

### 2/5 — Nonsense!

*2012-06-09*

The book is great. But this app is very poorly manufactured.

### 4/5 — Excellent App...and Some Advice :)

*2012-04-20*

1. Auto Listening or Text touch & Listen 2. Landscape View Thanks in advance!!!

### 2/5 — Good app but recording hardly working

*2011-10-24*

I would really like to give this app a 4 or 5 stars because I thought accent training in iPhone is a great idea. However, a lot of times when I tried to record, the recording function didn't do anything (when I pressed the button, it doesn't record) and occasionally crash the app. I use iPhone4 with iOS5. Please fix this issue.

### 1/5 — Review

*2011-10-03, version 1.2*

I bought this app thinking it was good but it turned up to be rubbish. I do not recommend anyone to bye it. Not worthy a penny.

### 3/5 — Suggestion

*2011-08-01, version 1.2*

Please add add pronunciation chart for 3.18 - track 52 and 53. Thanks!

### 4/5 — An ok - for the price

*2011-02-18, version 1.2*

Ted took ten tomatoes; a little water bottle

### 1/5 — Waste of money

*2021-12-10*

I love the book “American Accent Training”. I hoped this app would be a good addition to the book.
But this app is awful !!!

### 1/5 — No Audio

*2020-07-26*

Why we can't hear the audio in the books

### 1/5 — Can not play the audio,are you kidding ?

*2020-03-20*

Can someone help solve this problems, when I open the app, all sections no sound , it is just a book for me! Why I spend so much on a book, this app is 3 times of the book money.

### 1/5 — Don’t buy it !!!

*2018-05-06*

Waste of money, I purchased it to listen to it without the need of carrying the cd

### 1/5 — What is a crap app

*2017-03-07*

This book is a good book, and I thought app could help my learning process. But the app is totally a crap. Most of the audio links don't work at all. They just randomly dump some audio files together to make up the app. Would the developer test all files workable first before charge to your client?

### 1/5 — Worst ever app

*2014-10-12, version 2.1*

Please don't waste your money. There are some free apps that are 100 times better than this app

### 1/5 — Dont buy

*2013-06-29, version 2.0*

Absolute waste of money

### 1/5 — 환불해주세요

*2013-04-01*

별로에요

### 1/5 — Wasting $10bucks ...

*2013-01-02*

I paid $10 to buy this app .. So I highly expected that I can learn many things in it ..

But , it has very few lessons and I feel like I am wasting $10.

### 1/5 — Hate it

*2012-10-31*

Warning! It is not adapted for retina display, everything is fuzzy and blurry. Very small font. $10 is ridiculous

### 5/5 — Best app for accent modification

*2017-01-31*

I have been living and working in the US for over 6 years and I am fluent in English but have a strong accent. I tried 6 apps until I found American Accent, which is definitely the best app. The record function was. It working but I contacted customer service and it is now fixed. I am already starting to see improvement with my speech. Definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to speak clearer

### 5/5 — Awesome app!! It needs update

*2014-11-02, version 2.1*

Amazing app, but could you guys please update it ? iOS 8 is here don't leave this awesome app at bay.

### 5/5 — A great update ~ finally

*2012-09-05*

This app's original is an internationally recognized book. When I first downloaded this, expecting an I-Padized version of the namesake, I was hugely disappointed.

Now with this update, English learners around the world will have a very powerful tool. This app is a must for those who want to make them understood perfectly by native speakers.

I look forward to more updates which can even surpass the Bible of American pronunciation. You guys can do it by making the most creative use of I-Pad's ability.

### 5/5 — Amazing!!

*2010-09-06*

Nicely done, step by step, easy to follow. Definitely worth it.

### 5/5 — Easily Worth the Money

*2010-02-20*

If you want to work on your speaking of English, this excellent app is worth the imvestment. My only complaint is that the interface design could be more polish. The content, however is polished to a shine.

### 5/5 — Helpful & useful

*2010-02-11*

This is a very nice app for anyone want to improve his/her English speaking (American accent).
You will get a lot of useful information for how to pronounce some letters like (R & T).

### 5/5 — Excellent!

*2009-12-03*

Really helpfull to fix prononciation issues.

### 5/5 — Great app but needs improvements

*2009-09-23*

I really love this app and check it every day. I wish there were more softwares like this. It works well though I noticed that they mixed up few tracks here and there. I wish there were more rules on pronunciation and a separate list of tricky words to say. I feel like I still need a lot of issues to cover.
maybe an updated version has something new...

### 5/5 — Amazing program and great value!

*2009-06-17*

I am an ESL teacher and I do a lot of accent and pronunciation teaching. I LOVE this program. These days nearly all my students have iPods or iPhones these days. With this app, they always have a teacher with them. This program has lots of practical exercises that really work to help them standardize their accent. Just as importantly, it has nothing theoretical that is only intended for teachers or will only confuse them. I really like the onscreen recorder where they try to match their voice to a native speaker model. When I should this aspect to my students, they were totally psyched by it. I've used the book this was based on for a long time (American Accent Training by Ann Cook). I was stunned by how much audio is included in this program and how reasonable the price is. I just wish there were something like this for me to work on my Spanish accent : )

### 5/5 — Good

*2009-06-15*

I got shocked I never knewI could improve it
This way . It helps talk fluid fast whitout
Stops that make people notecing your foreing accent .get it
