### 4/5 — Great Dictionary, Cartoonish Interface

*2023-10-12*

The best dictionary for American English, with word origins, and a large vocabulary. This particular app interface is a bit cartoonish, as if it were designed for kids. It could be improved.

### 3/5 — It’s fine

*2023-06-02, version 10.0.10*

Very useful

### 5/5 — Ótimo!

*2020-11-06, version 10.0.10*

Prático

### 4/5 — Excellent, but not as good a the OED

*2020-02-27, version 10.0.10*

None

### 4/5 — Best Dictionary I’ve Used, but . . .

*2020-02-12, version 10.0.10*

Good etymologies and helpful usage notes. Also has easy-to-understand pronunciations and audio pronunciations if you’re still not sure.

Unfortunately, trying to get a redemption code so that my husband could use the app on his new phone took over a month.

### 3/5 — Good content, frustrating ratings pop-up

*2019-12-17*

The dictionary content is great, but the app repeatedly interrupts use with a pop-up asking for a five-star rating. There doesn’t seem to be any way to stop this from happening.

### 2/5 — The printed version is better

*2019-12-17, version 10.0.10*

I am use to extensive usage notes as in the printed version. I wish this app mirrored it more completely. This was my favorite dictionary. It seems like it is its competitors and not longer the standard.

### 5/5 — Love these Indo-European roots!

*2019-08-28*

I am thrilled almost every day by this dictionary. The definitions are thorough, the word origins are as good or better than most, and the Indo-European (and Semitic) roots are an unexpected and wonderful surprise.

Congratulations, American Heritage!

### 5/5 — Indispensable

*2019-08-05*

But those idiotically grinning stars that suddenly position themselves in front of one’s search, and their moronically cheerful How do you like us? Are almost enough to make me look elsewhere for a lexicon. Such a loathsome intrusion.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2019-07-12*

If I can limit your vocabulary, I can limit you intelligence and your knowledge & understanding. Enough said? Buy and use this App. It is a bargain!!!

### 4/5 — Nice to have

*2019-04-16, version 10.0.10*

The Dictionary covers my expectations.

### 5/5 — AHDictionay

*2019-02-10, version 10.0.10*

Used it for decades, the best for me, a writer.

### 3/5 — Not bad

*2019-02-03, version 10.0.10*

Wish the entries were more detailed.

### 4/5 — Great resource

*2018-11-01, version 10.0.10*

Great resource

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Since 6 years no update.

*2025-04-11, version 10.0.10*

Spent huge pennies, content ok but App is upsetting and disgusting. Feeling behind cheated

### 1/5 — Stop the begging

*2021-10-24, version 10.0.10*

Really tired of being begged fo a five-star review. If I wanted personal opinions I would consult a creditable source like MySpace.

I would prefer to not have the application keep track of recently defined words.

### 1/5 — Audio issues

*2021-04-03, version 10.0.10*

Love the app but the volume for pronunciation doesn’t wrk; kind of defeats the whole purpose of learning new words

### 1/5 — Obnoxious ads in expensive app

*2020-07-14, version 10.0.10*

I am disgruntled about ads like “Invite my friends” and “Rate this app” taking up fifty percent of the home screen.

The startup time is slow. The sound example usually don’t load. Really annoying.

### 1/5 — Great dictionary. Constant nag to rate!

*2019-02-09*

I have a setting turned off to prevent apps from asking me to rate them. Since you ignore this setting with daily prompts that I have to dismiss before I can use the app (a pop-up asking me to to "Rate us 5 Stars") I will give you one star instead.

Look, when I have paid for an app, and specified not to bother me with in-app rating appeals, why do you persist? This is disrespectful. You're probably selling my data right now since you've shown no such small concern for the user.

### 1/5 — Won’t download.earlier version much better.

*2018-03-23, version 10.0.5*

Bad

**Developer response:** We are sorry to hear you are disappointed by the app. If you experience issues using the dictionary, please contact us at: support@mobisystems.com, so we could help you resolve them.

### 1/5 — no good

*2016-12-10, version 8.2.7*

missing lot of setting like Restore/Backup, it won't let you move a word to a folder.... and of course you have to pay again, after entering the iTunes password it won't let you verify the amount $$$,, it goes strait to download,,,
you will think that it won't change you but you will be changed.
this app should be removed from app store,,, stealing from people,,,
how many times I have to paid for the same apps...

### 2/5 — Not regular updates of database and app..

*2024-01-10*

It’s ashamed that as this app was purchased spending a considerable amount of money, app must be updated and improved on regular basis because it’s said that it is premium app. Last update was years far away.

### 5/5 — The Wonderful Dictionary

*2026-01-01*

In grad school I lived with two Ph.D. Students in English. We had a few dictionaries in the household, but we referred to the American Heritage simply as The Wonderful Dictionary. The page layout and the pictures were nice, but it was the work itself that earned the sobriquet. Definitions are refreshingly clear and finely-drawn. Distinctions among variants come across crisply. The small paragraphs on usage are downright fun to read. And ah! the paragraphs on regionalisms! Wheee! (Yes, I’m a long-standing word nerd, and if that designation applies to you at all, you *need* this dictionary). And perhaps most crucial is the appendix of (proto-) Indo-European Roots. We who love dictionaries - especially print editions - delight in wandering through them; we ricochet along, our eyes caught by alluring words as we look up something else, catching a synonym that leads us into a random association. This Appendix turbocharges that experience. When we see those nonsensical bold-face syllables at the end of a definition, we know The Wonderful Dictionary will take us to a hidden origin that has seeded words - sometimes dozens of them - across time and space, opening linguistic relationships that we never imagined. The American Heritage Dictionary glitters and sparks. It lets us hold the language in our hands like a gem, flashing with a sense of almost spatial dimensionality. It continues to provide the most learning and the most fun I’ve ever had with a dictionary.

### 5/5 — Fabulous dictionary

*2024-03-07*

I’m retired now but used the AHD for work for many years. Still opening it (the app) frequently.

### 5/5 — Best english dictionary

*2023-10-03, version 10.0.10*

### 5/5 — The best

*2023-08-18, version 10.0.10*

No other dictionary, besides OED

### 5/5 — Word Origins

*2023-08-16*

This is my favorite dictionary because of the simplicity (and accuracy) with which you can trace etymologies.

### 5/5 — I love American Heritage

The definitions are excellent!

### 5/5 — Excellent dictionary

*2021-06-14*

Always appreciated the fact that this is the only dictionary I'm aware of that provides the reader with Semitic roots.
