### 5/5 — A Great App!

*2022-10-08, version 13.3*

I remember paying for this dictionary a couple of years ago and am so happy that it’s being updated to work with newer iOS updates. Thank You to the developers and the software company! If you need a dictionary, this app is a great choice. Believe me, I’ve tried most of them.

### 5/5 — Great Word Tool

*2022-08-08, version 13.2*

A dictionary is always good to have by your side. Even at this time. The syllables allow a person to know how to pronounce a word and the definitions are thorough and up to date. Great tool!

### 5/5 — I am very grateful this is still supported.

*2021-11-27, version 12.1.1*

Bought this app a decade ago. Still works. Perhaps a better interface and faster then newer dictionary apps. Very impressed.

### 5/5 — Love this Dictionary

*2020-12-31, version 10.0.5*

Back then this was the most expensive thing i bought on the iPhone , i think it was $30 and 9 or ten years ago was a lot of money .
I remember it took me a long time to download because i was downloading it over 3g and it was a lot of MBs and 3g was slow back then .
Thanks for keep updating this classic .

### 2/5 — Latest version crashes on iPhone 11

*2019-12-07, version 8.8*

Un fortunately the version pushed on 12/6/19 crashes when opened.
This is an amazing dictionary and I am sure it will be corrected promptly.
Thanks for the best iOS dictionary!

### 5/5 — Glad to see this still supported and available

*2017-03-21, version 7.0*

This app was ecpensive, and even though there's a 5th edition it is very honorable for them to keep this ok the App Store and especially to keep updating. This shows loyalty to their customers. And the app itself is amazing!!!

### 5/5 — Happy to have great app back

*2015-03-09, version 6.3*

By far my favorite dictionary app. So glad it's been upgraded to support IOS 8

### 5/5 — Finally, Finally, Finally

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — American Heritage Dictionary

*2021-04-24, version 11.0*

I bought this dictionary in 2010 and used it almost daily until I updated it a few days ago. It now won’t let me into the app, popping me right back to the menu.

### 1/5 — Great Dictionary

*2020-06-04, version 9.4*

But every time I try to use it, it puts up a pop up box to get me to rate it five stars.

### 1/5 — No longer works with current iOS

*2015-09-29, version 6.3*

The app needs to be updated to work with current iOS. APP crashes and will not load.

### 1/5 — Paid $25 for app that doesn’t work

*2015-02-16, version 4.1.5*

Ever since iOS8, this app (4th Edition) has crashed any time I went to the search window.
I wrote the authors, and they told me “too bad, so sad, we don’t plan to fix that bug, buy the 5th edition for $25”
I asked about an upgrade deal, and since I bought the app when it first came out, I am not eligible for an upgrade, and apparently not eligible for a working app either.
I was excited to see a recent update, thinking they might have fixed the iOS8 issue, but no, they were adding support for some Evernote stuff, not support for the current iOS.
Don’t waste your money, there are tons of FREE dictionary web sites out there. This has even soured me on their paper version, I'll never buy one of those again.

### 1/5 — Also bitten by the "thief" bug

*2012-12-31, version 4.1.5*

Which is insulting, annoying, and betrays a comical lack of quality control. It also underscores a perennial problem with this app: >500MB updates to fix small portions of code. They really should devise a better way to separate the code from the dictionary data.

### 1/5 — Terrible App

*2012-12-09, version 4.1.5*

This app sends annoying and offensive messages to my iPad. It asks for your Twitter account, which I don't have and started sending messages to my phone and iPad stating that "I am a software thief" despite the fact that it was purchased on iTunes. Sorry, I'll find a better app.

### 1/5 — Unbelievable.

*2012-12-01, version 4.1.5*

Yet another flawed update. I use this app as I read and do important assignments. I paid lots of dollars, my most expensive app, yet I can't use it, again. I'd probably have to wait yet another day or two for ANOTHER update. Wow. Unbelievable, every time I update... Lol, I can't even form a coherent sentence due to my frustration. Lol

### 1/5 — Time to let go

*2012-12-01, version 4.1.5*

As all others said, these guys went too far.

Giving my money to someone else who doesn't play games.

### 1/5 — No, I am not a software thief

*2012-11-30, version 4.1.4*

The app has recently started posting "I am a software thief" notifications. As a software engineer myself, I can understand frustration with illegitimate use of the app, but there is no excuse for this. I will avoid this company in the future.

### 1/5 — Disrespect your users, and they will disrespect you

*2012-11-18, version 4.1.4*

I bought this app almost three years ago. I've used and enjoyed it frequently; it's on my first screen of apps. American Heritage is a great dictionary.

Now, however, I'll never trust any software from American Heritage or Enfour again. Any update, any new feature, any new app I will always view with suspicion. These people aren't trustworthy.

I don't care if it's just a bug, and you think it will never happen again, and you think us legitimate users who paid have nothing to worry about. Any app that even •might• attempt to make public posts on my behalf with my permission is •clearly• violating user trust, and written by people with at best questionable ethics. You've lost my trust, and you're not getting it back easily — certainly not if you double down on this strategy of making posts without permission.

The first mistake people make when fighting piracy is to turn off their legitimate users. You've done that. Congratulations.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Pastor

*2026-03-06, version 16.1*

Excellent tool. Works great. Thank you…

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2026-02-24*

Je l’utilise pour l’étudie de la Bible. Elle est parfaite.

### 5/5 — So easy!

*2025-09-18, version 16.0.1*

This ap is invaluable to me! I use it often while writing or reading. Because it’s on my phone and not a book I have to find and go through, finding words is so easy! I even use it instead of a thesaurus while writing.

### 5/5 — Dictionary

*2025-09-17, version 16.0.1*

A great piece of labor for all who are seeking!

### 5/5 — Loved

*2023-12-12, version 15.0*

I’m thanking you .

### 5/5 — The American Heritage Dictionary 5

*2023-03-08*

Excellent dictionary

### 5/5 — Stopped working

*2023-01-30, version 13.4*

I do not want to update to the new version but the #4 sends me to your web page and no longer works. I use a dictionary everyday and have had to go to the web for my dictionary needs. Please fix version 4. Today, the best dictionary reigns again. Thank you for the update, now, all is calm, all is bright.

### 5/5 — Awesome dictionary.

*2023-01-29, version 13.4*

An education in the English language. Great definitions, sometimes including useful pictures to illustrate the concept, and (as far as I’ve found) always having a button to give audio pronunciation of the word. Includes surprisingly useful background in how the dictionary is developed, history of the English language, and a comprehensive listing of Indo-European roots… that I didn’t realize would be useful to have til I’d been using this dictionary for a few years! NOTE - this version of the dictionary is MUCH better than the other one available as an app… I got confused and thought support for this version had been dropped and bought the other one… really a shadow of the value!

### 5/5 — This app is broke again

*2023-01-25, version 13.3.2*

Not working on iPad Pro 11” (2020). When you open the app, you get a flash screen that says “total failure” before sending you to the App Store. Please fix.

### 5/5 — AHD

*2022-10-14, version 13.3*

Very useful
