I use my Platinum Card extensively for both everyday purchases and significant travel and spending, and American Express has consistently earned my trust. The level of service, professionalism and reliability I receive is a major reason Amex remains my preferred card. What stands out most is the customer service. Whenever I call, I’m consistently treated with respect and professionalism, and the representatives genuinely make me feel valued as a Cardmember. The travel and concierge services have also been excellent and have become an important part of how I manage my travel. I’m a very loyal person when a company earns my business, and American Express has done exactly that. I genuinely enjoy being an Amex Cardmember, I value the relationship I have built with them, and I look forward to continuing that relationship for many years to come. It gets you zero lounge access. Zero so you spend all this money thinking you’re gonna get into affiliated airlines lounges and then when you have a very long layover. American Express repeatedly checks customers’ credit reports through Equifax without proper transparency or clear authorization, even when accounts are in good standing and there is no apparent reason for continuous credit inquiries. This feels invasive and disrespectful toward loyal customers who have demonstrated financial responsibility for years. In addition, customer service has become incredibly frustrating. Many representatives seem poorly trained and unable to assist with even basic requests such as point transfers, account information, or simple account services. Customers are often forced to call multiple times just to receive accurate information or find someone knowledgeable enough to help. For a company that promotes itself as “premium,” the level of communication, customer support, and respect for customer privacy has been deeply disappointing. Long-term loyalty does not seem to be valued anymore. In 2017, I took advantage of their 8.99% purchase interest rate. At the time, I wasn’t a heavy user of the card, but that changed after I lost my job in 2020 due to COVID. After I accumulated roughly $7,000 in debt, they suddenly increased my interest rate to 12.99%—right when I owed them a substantial amount of money. I was furious. When I called to question the increase, the company explained that their agreement with customers allows them to raise rates whenever they deem necessary. I argued that I had been an excellent customer and had never once missed a payment. I could understand an increase because of delinquency or missed payments, but I believed an exception should have been made in my case. Unfortunately, my concerns fell on deaf ears. Then, two years later, they added an annual fee that I had never been charged before—again, despite the fact that I had never missed a payment. Now, many vendors have stopped accepting AMEX because of rising vendor processing fees, meaning I can barely use the card in many places anyway.
