## What is Ampere?

Ampere is an environmental-risk instrument for South African homes. It gives your suburb one honest number — and shows you exactly where that number comes from.

Calibrate once to your suburb and grid context, and Ampere computes a 0–100 risk score from air quality, grid stability, water and geo exposure. No alarms. No colour-coded panic. Just a measured reading and the sources behind it.

WHAT IT DOES

· Risk — a single composite score with air, grid, water and geo component cards. Each card shows its sub-score, the source it came from, the confidence in that source, and the date it was last checked. Tap Source Trace to see the full provenance.

· Compare — put your suburb next to another and see which way the numbers actually fall, component by component.

· Listening — log grid interruptions as they happen. Over weeks the pattern becomes visible: when your block sheds, how long, what it cost you.

· Habits — adopt resilience habits that honestly reduce your exposure or vulnerability. They never pretend to lower the suburb's score; they lower yours. Streaks included.

· Pantry — a 72-hour readiness tracker across water, power, food, medical and connectivity, with use-soon expiry windows.

WHY IT EXISTS

Most "risk" apps give you a red light and no reason. Ampere refuses that. Every score is traceable to a named source, a confidence level and a date — the same discipline a bank or insurer would demand of an environmental risk number. If a live source is unavailable, Ampere says so and falls back to a documented public-data catalog, clearly marked.

This is an instrument, not a dashboard. It reports what is measured. It does not predict, it does not catastrophise, and it does not sell your data because there is no server to sell it from.

PRIVACY POSTURE

· Everything is computed on your iPhone. No account, no cloud, no sign-in.
· No servers, no third-party SDKs, no analytics, no advertising.
· Location is optional — used once to match your nearest suburb, then discarded. The coordinate is never stored or transmitted.
· Notification permission is requested only if you set a threshold alert.

Built in South Africa, for South African suburbs and grids — Eskom direct, municipal, prepaid, estate and solar-hybrid contexts, from Sandton to Soweto to the Highveld.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2.3 — 2026-06-11

Loadshedding and air quality are now live the moment you open Ampere, with no key setup required.

· Pull down to refresh any screen, and Ampere refreshes on its own when you reopen it.
· Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets now show your current loadshedding stage, with a quiet alert when the stage climbs.
· Settings puts the live data switch front and centre, and you can still bring your own EskomSePush or air quality key.
· On-device acoustic listening surfaces real appliance detections with live confidence.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-06-02

Ampere 1.2 — now on iPad and Mac, and it can hear your home.

Universal. Ampere now runs natively on iPad and Mac, not just iPhone — the same calibrated instrument, laid out for the bigger screen. Your locations and history sync across your devices.

Acoustic appliance detection (learning beta). Ampere can now listen, on-device, for the acoustic signatures of your home's appliances — the kettle, the pump, the geyser — to sharpen your grid and readiness picture. Everything is processed locally and discarded immediately. Audio is never recorded, never stored, never uploaded. Off by default; you turn it on from the Listening tab.

Morning Brief. A daily on-device readout that tells you what changed overnight and what to watch today — air, grid, water and geo — in plain language, computed privately on your device.

Interactive Log-Outage widget. Hit by loadshedding or an unplanned trip? Log the outage straight from the Home Screen widget, without opening the app. It feeds your grid history and your suburb's picture.

Suburb collective. See how your suburb is doing against the people actually living there — an anonymous, opt-in community compare layered on top of the source-traced catalog. No accounts, no identities.

Time-Sensitive prepaid alerts. Prepaid running low? Ampere now sends a Time-Sensitive notification that breaks through Focus, so a flat meter never catches you in the dark.

As always: every number carries its source, confidence and date. Live data (EskomSePush / WAQI) stays optional and off by default, with the on-device South African catalog as the honest offline fallback. No tracking.
