### 4/5 — Well-Rounded Game

*2021-10-31, version 3.0.2*

Normally I’m not the biggest fan of ancient warfare, but I found this game to be exceptional in terms of content and gameplay. While I do feel like there are a few missed opportunities, or a few overly easy or impractically difficult scenarios, much of the game itself has a lot to offer and I’d definitely recommend it over a lot of the other ancient warfare games. Kinda wish we could play around with the 300-400 AD units though…I’d like to see a remake of the Chalons or Adrianople maps.

4/5 for good effort.

### 3/5 — No longer as good...

*2019-06-26, version 2.2.0*

I gave it five stars sometime back, but lately some of my units refuse to fight, can’t select archers to fire. I’ve noticed it across the other ‘ancient’ games. Very frustrating!!!

### 2/5 — Defending the Walls Against this Update

*2019-02-06, version 1.14*

Good game - horrible update being applied across all Hexwar Ancients and Civil War titles.

New speedy animations look ridiculous.

Cannons move like they are on ATVs. weeeeee !!!

Heavy troops like Hoplites now speed walk like a perky fitness trainer in yoga pants.

Hexwar - please put one more level of speed down so that there is an option for heavy troops and equipment to move more realistically like they once did.

### 4/5 — Fun

*2018-03-12, version 1.14*

Fun

### 4/5 — Good stuff

*2017-07-13, version 1.14*

Smart ai, well balanced game. Guile is needed.

### 4/5 — Lots of fun

*2017-07-02, version 1.14*

Simple, but challenging enough to be entertaining. Educating on both historical and military facets.

### 3/5 — Fun but very frustrating

*2017-06-12, version 1.13*

Try the free lite version first, just to see what I mean and make your own opinion. When the battles are more balanced, it can be pretty fun to outwit the enemy. But the battles that are not balanced? I'll just say make sure your phone has a good case and have plenty of cigarettes laying around. Super frustrating! Flanking is almost impossible, the enemy gets reinforcements just when most of your units are depleted enough, and most importantly, the terrain bonuses are really hard to master.

However, the most frustrating part is the terrible controls. I don't know how many times I mistakenly moved a unit, or ended my turn early when trying to "ok" an attack (it's the same button!!!).

So to make a long story short, get the free lite version and see how you like that first!

### 4/5 — Great ear game

*2017-05-10, version 1.13*

For the traditional wargamer

### 4/5 — Good game

*2017-05-01, version 1.13*

Could use pass and play, and design your own level. Maybe spawn in units

### 2/5 — Incredibly frustrating

*2016-09-12, version 1.13*

Simple stuff like not being able to flank unless you have a giant free area, veteran units still getting wiped by non vet units, basic stuff that you should be able to use to win fights is poorly or not implemented.

Especially the flanking is horrible. The whole concept of the Roman cohort was to allow units to be flexible and take advantage of opportunity but in this game you need a square mile of empty space to maneuver.

Musket smoke got it right this game is just frustrating.

### 4/5 — Awesome, but needs something

*2016-08-25, version 1.13*

May I suggest a custom battle area of the game? Set up different units on both (or more) sides in a map, and then play as a faction of choice.

### 4/5 — Fun

*2016-04-12, version 1.13*

This game is fun.

### 4/5 — Like a good miniatures wargame!

*2016-01-04, version 1.13*

Great hex game play but I wish the other campaigns were included. Still, nice to play a traditional game without the "buy to win" robbery.

### 4/5 — Historical accuracy?

*2016-01-02*

One of the scenario introduction: "Caesar was poised to attack Gergovia, now known as Paris".
Wow! So long for history and geography.
Too bad for this kind of game, it gives a poor impression of historical research done by the authors.
Still, a quick and entertaining game for the iPad.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Oh my god

*2024-09-21, version 3.0.4*

We don’t need another one of these games, THERE ARE BILLIONS OF THEM, AND THEY ARE NOT EVEN FUN, honestly, there are way to many of these games. I am not paying money for this garbage.

### 1/5 — Avoid these Updates if you have an older iPad 4

*2019-03-08, version 1.14*

As the title suggests, the recent updates for all HexWar games are geared for newer iPads. If you have these games running properly on your older devices it is best to leave these updates alone. Unfortunately, no consideration was given to those of us who supported these games at initial release as we are left with unplayable games, or crashes during the update install. Thanks for nothing!

### 1/5 — Recent Fixes Ruined The Game

*2019-02-13, version 2.0.0*

Recent bug "fixes" ruined this game! I have been playing this (and other hex war games) for a loooong time but Ancient Rome has been my air-travel go to. Love(d) it!

However, the recent "fixes" have broken it. First of all the graphics are worse; the units seem to have been compressed and harder to see. The unit strength levels are also much more difficult to read. A 10 looks like a 1 and 3 looks like 8.

Also, some adjacent units now cannot engage each other. In the "Defending Territory" battle the enemy doesn't even advance!

I regret downloading the patch & wish I could have the old app back. Please do a re-set!

### 1/5 — Info

*2016-09-05, version 1.13*

Good game but you pay for it and then they tell u it's only for 1 campaign, you have to keep paying to do more!!!!
Total rip off!!!!!
Should be ashamed because they say it's for the full game !!!!

### 1/5 — Maximus Dissapointius

*2016-08-27, version 1.13*

Overall a great game- well the ONE extra campaign that the game has that the lite version doesn't. Expected more considering I payed for it. Such a pathetic and greedy move from the money grabbing developers. DO NOT BOTHER TO PAY FOR THIS GAME

### 1/5 — First level is impossible

*2015-12-30, version 1.13*

So I was playing the game, enjoying it, and I was excited because I had just about destroyed 50% of the army, I only had to kill one more unit until I won then as it was my turn, words came up on the screen "enemy reinforcements have arrived" as a hoard of guys come pouring out of the forest, wiping me out, and making me rage quit.

### 1/5 — Don't update if you have an old device

*2015-06-02, version 1.8*

This game worked fine until I downloaded the update. Now it is completely trashed. It doesn't even manage to display the opening screen. Do you guys do any testing at all before you release this stuff ?

### 1/5 — poor update again!

*2015-05-28, version 1.8*

fails to even load after most recent update, last time it did this after an update it took weeks before a fix was released. do not update especially if on the original ipad1

### 1/5 — Deceiptively expensive

*2015-03-31, version 1.7*

Game play is awesome but... Not worth it. It cost an extra $8 to play the rest of the game. You only get an extra 1 campaign with 4 more to buy.

### 1/5 — NOT WORTH IT

*2015-03-16, version 1.7*

This would be ok for a free game but for 4.99 plus you have to purchase other countries to be able to fight not woth it plus the game crashes for an app that cost $5 shoulnd't be crashing that much. Don't buy it' I want a refund.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Wonderful game

*2023-05-21, version 3.0.4*

It is an enjoyable and wonderful game. Good design with each unit in detail. And also a sound research on history of Rome and its enemies.

### 5/5 — Another awesome game

*2018-12-24, version 1.14*

These are my favorite turn based strategy games on iOS period. Well worth the purchase. It combines strategic depth and breadth with tactical decision making and historical tie-ins. 5*s for sure.

### 5/5 — Awesome sauce

*2017-08-17, version 1.14*

Awesome sauce

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2017-07-13, version 1.14*

Very fun! Really has a feel of Roman war. The way units work really makes it feel like how the army's would have felt.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2016-10-03, version 1.13*

Excellent turn-based tactical game: user-friendly controls, simple game play, & lots of fun.

### 5/5 — Anständiges tabletop style wargame

*2016-05-09*

Gutes system a la field of glory. Bestes wargame auf ios. 3d brauch ich nicht, finds gut so. Mehr zoom wäre gut, und ein szenario editor.

### 5/5 — Amazing game

*2016-01-14, version 1.13*

I love the strategy aspect of the game! If u lose just rethink ur plan and try again!

### 5/5 — Great

*2015-11-13, version 1.13*

One of the best hex games, because it combines infantry, cavalry, archers, large army scenarios, and unusual units like elephants and catapults.

### 5/5 — Review

*2015-09-20, version 1.9*

Very fun game like all their others. Challenging enough to keep you thinking.
 But not frustrating.
The units are well thought out.

### 5/5 — All roads lead away from Rome.

*2015-08-10, version 1.9*

Love this game. The mini-scenarios work so much better than the big battle variant.Bit hit and miss, but when you check an attack and think,"What if I commit the General with them?" and they bust through,it's all worthwhile.
Extra campaigns cost extra, but £1.49 is a pittance for the play value.
