And the same company having many more projects gained more popularity and therefore took priority over this game. From gachas to events and even shopping. The game eventually became stagnat with fewer updates, and so many U.S players downloaded the Japanese APK of the game which had a extensive variety of items to buy and many features not yet seen on the U.S app. Many fans, including myself, sent emails requesting more engagement and equal interface features to enhance gaming experience to which developers responded poorly. Stating that they did not have the means or staff to do so. Since them the community behind the game has been reduced greatly. The base game shop hasnt been updated in years, but you can still purchase in game currency for a premium shop which also has not been updated in years. Its a cool game for nostalgia, but nothing more than that. ### 2/5 — Good game but bad data transfer… *2025-08-04, version 2.0.6* Played this game about 10 years ago and loved it. Dedicated my time with making outfits and attending events, got so many free stuff and a high level. One thing I wish for is that data transfer was done differently, preferably a phone number or email. I like the concept and the affection system, but the UI is a bit confusing which is expected for such an old game ### 3/5 — Good game but it has a weak execution *2022-06-03* The purpose of this game is to raise your own boyfriend by talking to him, getting him to study, making him work, and overall, I love the concept. However, the game makes it feel more like raising a pet or a child rather than a boyfriend… there are little to no romantic moments or chats. I have not been playing for a long time so I am not sure if later on there will be more romantic conversations or interactions and if there is not I would be very disappointed. ### 4/5 — News an Update *2021-08-17, version 2.0.6* Love the game been playing it for about 6 years but this game needs an update. The gatchas are repeats and the exchange tickets prizes theme never changes from Japanese!! It would be nice to have some more functionality and to have everything easier to navigate rather than going through several menus. More interactions between students would be cool and being able to chat with other players would be awesome! Yet I still redownload it every few years. It’s simple, yet fun. It’s also semi-easy to get currency for free via tapjoy. I’m sad to see they locked certain things behind paywalls (ex: certain settings) that used to be free though. ### 3/5 — It's getting better *2020-01-08* I know you have other running apps and probably some in the making as well, so I know the last thing you probably want to hear, is some person gripe and complain to you but come on! I'll start my review by saying that I absolutely adore this game! The art style is phenomenal, the idea is great but there are some things that need improvement. As someone mentioned in a review, I kinda just feel like I'm just watching my student. 1. some change to the dialogue would be nice. It gets a bit boring having the same conversations every time I talk to my student. Why not add more to it, like MCC? 2. Gaining a new trait and gaining new levels takes a very long time which makes it kind of hard to stay motivated to do some. 3. The Exchange Gacha never changes! 4. Please organize your hairs. Like MCC, it'd be nice if you could put the hair styles in order of the required levels. 5. An interesting storyline would be awesome! Again, I know this is a lot but story is something that's important to me. It helps get me engaged and makes me feel like I have something to work towards. DB did an excellent job of this. I know there's a story already but it's a bit brief. If you could show a short visual of us picking out a rabbit, dog, etc. Again, I love the game but it needs a bit more added to it. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of dress up games or anime! ### 3/5 — 😑 *2019-11-30, version 2.0.6* I’ve been playing for quite some time now but the thing is that on the recycle robot, please change the gacha.. it’s been the same items for a VERY long time! What do even do with the exchange tickets (which u have ALOT left over) when u have everything on the gacha??? Also please try harder to make better events an gachas.. it seems that they are ALL girly and why would u want girly items on GUYS this ain’t animal girlfriend!!! THE PREMIUM PACKS! U KEEP REPEATING THEM MONTH BY MONTH! DO NORMAL CLOTHES FOR ONCE IM BEGGING U PLEASE!!! ### 4/5 — Since the beginning.. *2019-10-27* Ive been on AB since it came out in English and I have to say it's definitely my favorite out of all the Ambition games. Even if it's art style looks outdated compared to Dream Boyfriend. There's something so much more attractive about this one than DB. Saying that—I •really• wish the company would put some effort into this game like they do the others. The last time y'all updated this game was literally a year ago and have been radio silent on improving the game since then. Can we have game notifications to let us know our boys are done working? That they've been given advice? That their stamina is full? That they've been recommended something? This game has been alive for 6+(?) years and I've never once gotten a notification from it— but DG and DB have had it since launch. And That's honestly my only complaint. It's not as if you guys don't give us new hairstyles or outfits (although re-hauls of year one content is becoming eerily common) and there's a new Event consistently being added to the game every month. You guys are doing excellent—but please just give us an actual update. Please—PLEASE update this game. ### 4/5 — Love this game but... *2019-10-14, version 2.0.6* ...It reuses a lot of items from the previous years or so. Also, the themes for the gatcha and events are similar to other themes done before. I’ve been playing Animal Boyfriend for 5+ years now, and trust me, it gets pretty boring when the themes for gatcha and events are repeats or similar. I think you, editors / developers, should try to come up with new ideas and design. Thanks! ### 4/5 — Love the art and play spaces *2019-05-29* I have played this game long enough to acquire 3 animal boyfriends. First, I really dig the art and appreciate the work that it entails. Second, I love that relationship details are kept minimal. I think that encourages one’s own storytelling imagination, i. e. a devart diary. However, I would like to see the user manual, so to speak, expanded. Why do some of the sleeping boyfriends cry? How come some boyfriends seem like “decoys” with just default and 0 trait settings and artwork unlisted on “style check”? I hate to stumped on these things so clarifications would be appreciated! Otherwise, I love this gorgeous unfolding puzzle! Thank you! ### 2/5 — Sluggish app, nothing special *2019-02-11, version 2.0.6* I’ve heard that the app is essentially a wrapped up browser and I wonder if that explains the bad performance on my tablet. I liked the game on my phone, but it’s an unenjoyable experience on a 12" tablet (trying to use my phone less). The app will take the entire screen in portrait, making UI elements designed for a mobile sized screen extremely awkwardly to use. For some reason, the performance is sluggish than on mobile too: navigating anywhere takes a couple of seconds to load when I expect apps to be snappy and instant, making it an awful experience that made me neglect the game for months just because doing other things was easier. Playing AB on iPad is definitely not recommended. The game itself is nothing special, it’s a dress up where the majority of the best clothes need to pay paid for, and even then it’s a gamble because this is a typical Japanese gacha where you buy a paid currency then use it to gamble for a set selection of items. It’s tedious when I have lots of clothes and can’t even sort them by colour, only by their useless categories which are unhelpful for actually finding what I want, especially 3-ish years of amassing free items (because no way am I going down the rabbit hole of ‘playing’ this gambling game with my real money). I’d say: spend your cash elsewhere, you will find more enjoyment playing browser dress ups on Picrew.me and other sites for free and you won’t have to deal with poor navigation and a blatantly gambling scheme if you want your bishounen fix. ### 3/5 — It’s okay but *2018-12-31* I really like this game but it could definitely be better. For starters, being able to send actual friend requests would make it easier to keep in touch with people you meet through the game. Secondly, being able to pick a darker skin tone would, in my opinion, make the customization better. Also since the characters are shown at a slight angle at the head some of the clothes look kind of awkward. Also it’d be nice if we could send clothes as well as items as gifts ### 3/5 — Cute fun! *2018-09-23, version 2.0.6* This app is great and all but there are things that could be added to make it even more fun. Firstly, what if ww get more interaction with the boys. E.g. what if the boys were to talk without points instead of waiting for the next day and what if we are able to get options to choose such as when they ask ‘how are you?’ and you get options such as ‘good’ ‘bad’ and ‘okay’. After chosen a option, if pick ‘bad’, he’ll ask ‘what’s wrong?’ and you’ll get two or three options. Secondly, what if you can go to town to see people and interact with them to make friends and visits. Thirdly, after the boy’s love confession, why don’t you go out on a date or something. That’s all I think. There’s more ideas but than I would be going on forever. ### 5/5 — Cute game! *2018-07-25* This game is very cute. There are lots of different outfits and ways to interact with your animal boyfriend! Ongoing events and gachas are a very nice touch too. It's obvious though that this game isn't updated as much as it could be, it's a parallel to MOE Can Change but with it being less popular it has way less updates features. It says "touch screen" and I do, and it just freezes there ### 1/5 — They rip you off because you can do very little in this game *2016-09-08* Everything in this game is precisely tuned to make us spend money on it. You need attributes that take forever to get in order to equip clothing or face or hair which they don't disclose this fact until after you buy it. Certain hair colour like black hair is unlocked at level 75 and this is not disclosed to new players either. If you want other kinds of hair you can pay for them with real money. I just recently bought new eyes and the expression is set to a really dopey closed eyes and in order to change his expression you need to spend $80 to buy ALL the app packs IN ONE MONTH to get access to change it. That's very scammy and misleading of them to do this to their player base. I think they prey on the fact women will spend money to customise their men. You also don't get to do much in game with the character : They make you rest the character for four hours and that is tedious. They let you chat once a day and some chat quests are 15 chats and the game only allows 10 meaning if you want to do the daily you have to buy items with real money. For a freemium game like this it is very rip offish in how they don't disclose the hidden fees compared to other games that do freemium. I still kept this notebook, which I’ve had for nearly decade now, and it has my ID and password that I’ve written down for this game’s data transfer. It still works! According to the log, the last time I’ve done anything was on the 16th of April 2016. Downloading and playing this game, and listening to the main upbeat, cheerful Animal Boyfriend theme song puts a smile to my face, and I feel like I’m younger again. The game is pretty simple and it’s something I’d check in on, from time to time, and get into the gacha events. The fact that Ambition is still updating this game with newer events, since 2014, has me amazed. I’m gonna keep playing this game to show my appreciation. ### 5/5 — Nearly caught up! *2022-02-02* Holy crap! I started playing again and they’ve added the additional animals and new closet format! As far as I know the only things this is behind the JP game with is 2 fewer max students (i’m fine with that, i haven’t maxed out yet lol) and swappable animal features. basically being able to change the style of animal ears and tail between a few options (eg perky ear bunny vs floppy ear).
