And the free version is not compelling enough to make me want to pay (and possibly be disappointed). ### 4/5 — A great resource - super-helpful tech support *2018-09-19* I had trouble (mostly my fault, not being a tech-weenie) getting everything loaded, and the app creator (in Austria!) was super-helpful, spending more than 2 hours on chat with me! The app will be a great resource on my upcoming (fifth) visit to Costa Rica. It could use more detail and is missing a few species I know should be included, but it also has a huge species list, very useful for those biota for which I don't carry a field guide, since I'm mainly a birder. ### 1/5 — Can’t get it to open. Can’t choose 0 stars. *2018-08-04* Although it indicates it woks on my iPhone 6+, once it loads it freezes and then closes. I will reclaim my payment as soon as I can ### 1/5 — Worthless *2021-12-20* I downloaded the entire app and paid for all the sub categories (everything.) While you get a very wide range of what I presume to be all the fauna in Costa Rica, what you really get are just pictures. You get one picture of the animal, bird, reptile, or insect, it's Latin name and it's technical classification in the taxonomy of Animalia, and that's it. No description of the animal, no description of where you might find the animal, no description of its habitat, no description of its behavior, or no differential description between two similar animals. What do you get is a link to the Wikipedia page of each animal, bird, insect, etc. This works out great in all the Costa Rica jungles that have Internet access (not many.) This app reeks of laziness. It's essentially worthless.I intend to delete the app before I go to Costa Rica. ### 1/5 — App lässt sich nicht öffnen *2020-03-03* Leider leider lässt sich die App nicht öffnen, dabei klingt sie supercool! ### 1/5 — No good *2020-01-23* Free version is useless. Looks like it depends on WiFi for information so I’m not paying for full version. WiFi is very rare and slow in Costa Rica. **Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. We have just published a major release with many updates and improvements (see our website for details). The WIFI connection is required only at the beginning until the database and all required images have been downloaded. From there on you can fully use the app offline. I contacted Stefan and he assured me that they were working on a fix. He emailed me today to say that version 1.7.0 was out and it now works perfectly! You’re paying for much more than just a field guide—the photography alone is artwork and the user interface is streamlined and sleek. You’re paying for an updatable photography book by a number of talented/skilled photographers. I think complaints about price miss this—the work done to achieve something like this is immense and there is no comparable resource like it for Costa Rica. Physical field guides suffer from the fact that taxonomy is ever-changing and fluid. A guide such as this can be updated to add taxa and bring things up-to-date. Indispensable quand on vit au Costa Rica ou pour voyager ### 5/5 — A good starting point *2019-06-16* Plenty of animals in this guide which is relatively easy to use with good features like favouriting, distribution maps and naming. The hierarchies of information make sense but it takes quite a few clicks to get where you want. Never-the-less, it should be an indispensable guide for Costa Rica. I do think it’s unfair to criticise the need to pay for information, it very clearly says next to the app that it has In App purchases, which surely reflects the work put in. Complete unlock is £14.99 which includes future releases, in line with buying a book. I hope they keep adding to this app - both in terms of adding even more animals and in terms app functionality itself - as I’m really looking forward to putting it to good use. ### 5/5 — My life saver/ La respuesta a todas mis preguntas *2018-08-02* My main interés is insects, specially from Costa Rica. I take a lot of pictures and I am always looking for names and identification of the huge amount of insects that live in CR. This application saved my curiosity and gave answers to most of my questions about insects. It also has mammals, reptiles, birds, fishes, etc Finally someone took the time to organize this beautiful word of creatures living in beautiful CR! I highly recommend buying this application Tengo un gran interés en macro fotografía de insectos especialmente en Costa Rica. Esta aplicación es una maravilla y responde constantemente a mis dudas acerca de nombres , descripciónes y especies. Las fotografías son hermosas y las descripciones muy claras. Es wäre schön wenn man die Möglichkeit hätte Tiere die nicht gelistet sind irgendwie mit Foto als Vorschlag an die Autoren hochzuladen.
