## What is Apollo for Reddit?

Apollo was an iOS app for browsing Reddit from 2015 to 2023. In 2023 Reddit announced significant price changes to their API, going from free to potentially costing tens of millions of dollars per year, with 30 days notice before developers would start incurring charges. As a result, Apollo was forced to shut down after the better part of a decade building for an incredible, supportive community. With over 100,000 five star ratings, and many accolades, I was incredibly proud of what Apollo accomplished.

The app now exists in a commemorative/historic state, with a thank you message, the option to unlock a Goodbye Apollo wallpaper pack, and options to export data if you had the app downloaded previously (shake the device), and all previous app icons are now automatically unlocked. You can also use the app as a hub to get updates about other things the developer (Christian Selig) is working on.

Again, thank you so much for all the years of fun, it was the honor of a lifetime building the app for all of you!

### 5/5 — Best

*2026-08-26, version 1.15.17*

It was the best app for surfing Reddit.

### 5/5 — Still the best app

*2026-08-22, version 1.15.17*

It’s been a minute now, and this was sadly the version of “Reddit” that is considered to be good. Hugs all around, Reddit is a ghost town now, incomprehensible levels of botting with terrible moderation.

Btw Ghislaine Maxwell was a head Reddit moderator during the “golden years”. The whole thing was cooked from the start, but Apollo was the best part of it.

What I’m trying to say, is that Reddit doesn’t deserve us, it never has.

### 3/5 — Needs work on

*2026-08-07, version 1.15.17*

DUNCAN’s BMW (double-vey)

### 5/5 — Not forgotten

*2026-07-16, version 1.15.17*

This was so much better then the official app rip

### 5/5 — Best Reddit App (RIP)

*2026-06-08, version 1.15.17*

Ahh, I can still remember the good ol’ days before Reddit built their official app around 10 years ago. I was in high school when I got my first iPhone and can vividly remember finding Alien Blue on the App Store 2013. I thought Alien Blue was perfect; simple, clean, and easy to use, deploying logic that allowed us to use Reddit just how it was intended to be used. Once Reddit released their official app, they decided to remove Alien Blue from the App Store but the app still worked if you had it downloaded on your device. I never knew Alien Blue was removed from the App Store until I got a new iPhone 2016 and was utterly devastated when I couldn’t find it on the App Store anymore.

But then that’s how I found out about Apollo. I felt like we were in the future when I first started using Apollo, the customization was on another level and I quickly got over losing my ability to use Alien Blue. Life was perfect for the next 6 years, until Reddit decided to go public and let greed and profits take over. I was devastated when Apollo was cancelled, I tried using the official Reddit app for a little bit but hated it and just stopped going on Reddit overall. Luckily enough, a jailbreak for my iPhone on iOS 16 dropped on January 2024 and one of the first things I did was try and get access to Apollo again and i was successful! Too a little bit of time researching and getting the proper keys to setup Apollo using my own API, but I’m extremely happy I’m still able to use Apollo to this day! We’re halfway through 2026 already and I just hope Apple or Reddit won’t do something that’ll break my ability to use Apollo. Thank you Christian for everything you’ve done for all of us, I’ve made use to support you for your dedication to preserving one of the best apps to come out in the past 10 years!

### 5/5 — Rip to the goat

*2026-06-06, version 1.15.17*

Still makes me sad

### 5/5 — Still the best Reddit App

*2026-05-30, version 1.15.17*

It’s been 2 years since Apollo stopped development. Yet it is still the best Reddit app ever made. Thankfully there is Apollo Reborn which does require side loading but keeps it Apollo functional. I’m posting this review to say thanks to Christian for the many years he worked on Apollo. I’m sure the community would love it see it open sourced if he was ever so inclined. Either way thank you again Christian!

### 5/5 — Thanks for everything!

*2026-05-21, version 1.15.17*

Reddit is destroying Apollo and all community trust; primarily through the actions and communications of its current CEO. :(

I deleted my accounts and will have a hard time contributing/engaging with Reddit even if they reverse course.

Apollo, the app, has been a joy to use. The stock Reddit app pales in comparison. Thanks for providing an excellent user experience over all these years through Apollo.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

### 5/5 — Please come back

*2026-05-01, version 1.15.17*

This was the best I’ve ever had and I still think about it to this day.

### 5/5 — Awesome app

*2026-04-19, version 1.15.17*

5/5. Can’t believe it’s not on my home screen anymore.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.15.17 — 2023-11-28

Updates merch link

### 1.15.16 — 2023-11-17

Updates metadata and in-app details to more accurately reflect the nature of this app being in a "historic/commemorative" state, but still with the option to unlock wallpapers if you so choose

### 1.15.15 — 2023-07-20

Adds an option to download all wallpapers rather than having to do it individually. Also adds an option to sign up to be notified for my Next Thing™!

### 1.15.14 — 2023-07-02

Apollo has now closed down, this update pushes out a few fixes to make everything a bit nicer in that state, so explore around!

- Adds ability to migrate your Apollo Pixel Pals to the new separate Pixel Pals app, and even includes a fun easter egg if you do so. If you're not familiar with Pixel Pals, it's a really fun app that lets you customize your iOS device with a variety of cute virtual pets. It'd really mean a lot to me if you checked it out and considered supporting it!
- Added a bunch more wallpapers to the "Goodbye Apollo" Wallpaper Set. It's available in Settings, and is a great way to remember Apollo for years to come with some incredible wallpapers by the amazing designers who have created Apollo's icons over the years.
- If you have time left on your subscription, you have the option to go to the Settings tab and decline the automatic refund. Developers pay refunds out-of-pocket, so your kindness and consideration would mean a lot to me there given how unexpected the last few weeks have been. Cancelling your subscription in the Settings app isn't enough, you also have to manually decline the refund in Apollo if you so choose.

As the hour gets closer the app will change automatically to no longer being able to browse Reddit, but you'll still be able to open it and customize the home screen app icons with the over 100 incredible icons added over the years. Pixel Pals migration, wallpapers, merch, and more are also available, as well as the possibility of another fun easter egg revealing itself.

I feel like I've said it a lot over the last few weeks, but I feel so, so fortunate that I've been able to build an app over the last 9 years alongside such an incredible community who helped me to shape the app for the better. I've met and talked with so many cool people, and the app is infinitely better than it was from the outset because of it. I'm heartbroken it's ending this way, but I've loved every minute of building this app for you folks and wouldn't have done a thing differently. Love y'all.
