This app saved me hours in GIMP! Just get your 1024 square image right and it does all the work. Includes correctly formatted JSON too. Just clobber you old appiconset and you are good to go. No fuss.

If you just want to save yourself the 30 seconds in Preview it will take to resize an image several times, this may be worth $1 to you. But be aware that it will not clip a square image to an app icon-shaped roundrect; it will simply resize the image exactly as-is.
