## What is APRS Map?

Live position tracking and messaging for amateur radio public-service events.

APRS Map shows every volunteer on one live map and lets net control talk to
any of them by text — during a race, a ride, a search, or any event where
people are spread out and someone has to know where they are.

  WHAT IT DOES

  • See everyone, live. Positions refresh every few seconds. Trackers are
color-coded by how recently they reported, so a station that has gone
quiet is obvious at a glance.

  • Share your own position. The app sets a sensible reporting interval based upon the speed of your movement.
It keeps reporting with the screen locked and the phone in your pocket,
and sends an extra position whenever you have moved far enough to matter.

  • Message net control. Full two-way messaging with delivery and read
receipts, photos, and group conversations. Arriving messages are read
aloud, announcing who is calling before the message itself, so you can
keep your eyes on the course.

  • Answer from your wrist. The Apple Watch app turns your watch into a
push-to-talk microphone: hold Talk, speak, release, and your reply is
sent. Your phone announces incoming messages aloud even in a pocket, so
the watch is free to be the thing you answer with.

  • Work where there is no signal. Cache map tiles before you head out and
the map keeps working when coverage does not.

  FOR NET CONTROL

Aid stations, rest stops and anyone following an event can watch the same
live map at marsaprs.org — no app required.

  BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD

This app is built for MARS (Marin Amateur Radio Society) events and connects
to the marsaprs.org server. You will see the current public event's map right
away. Sharing your own location and using messaging require a PIN and password
issued by the event organizer, so if you are not taking part in a MARS event
there is little here for you yet.

An amateur radio license is not required to use the app. Position sharing goes
out over the internet, not over the air, under a callsign the server assigns.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.25.5+86 — 2026-08-31

Messages addressed to you are now always read aloud when
"Speak text messages" is on — including when the app is in the
background, the screen is locked, or you are reading a different
conversation. Previously the person a message was FOR could be
the only one who did not hear it.

  Radio traffic:
  • Transcriptions now arrive even when they finish after the
recording, instead of the entry staying silent.
  • Courtesy beeps and repeater Morse identifiers are no longer
sent as recordings with no words.
  • Recordings no longer start with a loud squelch thump.
  • Clips play one at a time instead of talking over each other.

  Messages window:
  • Monitored traffic is now two clearly separated lists —
"Everyone's Text" and "Radio audio & text" — shown according
    to which switches are on.
  • All settings live behind one gear icon rather than two.

  Map:
  • Long-press the map to pin a spot; it stays on screen as you
pan and zoom. Tap the pin, or anything that recentes the map,
    to release it.
  • Courses made of markers (such as Dipsea Markers) now appear.
    They were silently missing before.

Also: location sharing resumes correctly on iOS with "While
Using" permission, the location-consent sheet scrolls on small
screens, and the app no longer asks for an event password it has
  already accepted.

### 1.25.0+68 — 2026-08-18

• You can now follow all message traffic on an event, not just messages sent to you, with a
running log and playable radio recordings.
  • Radio audio arrives as soon as a transmission ends, and every clip is
    leveled to the same volume.
  • One audio queue: speech, radio and alerts never overlap, nothing older
than five minutes is read out, and a Stop control is always available.
  • Spoken messages now pause between sentences.
  • Sound and event-following settings are split into two clearer panels.
  • Apple Watch: push-to-talk microphone permission fixed, a working Stop
countdown, and a diagnostic that tests whether the watch can speak
    while dimmed.
  • Messages can now be 1000 characters, sized for dictation.

### 1.22.1+42 — 2026-08-11

Apple Watch app
• APRS Map now includes an Apple Watch companion for messaging. When a message arrives you can answer from your wrist: press and hold Talk, speak your reply,
and release — it sends. The watch shows who called and what they said, and tells you when your reply is sent, delivered and read.
• Your phone stays the loudspeaker. Incoming messages are announced aloud on the phone even while it is in your pocket, so you hear who is calling without
looking at anything. The watch is there to answer.
• Your reply follows the traffic — whoever last called you becomes the destination, so the message you just heard is also a statement of who you are about to
answer. And if a reply cannot go out because your phone is off or out of range, it is kept: a warning on the Talk screen opens an Outbox where you can send
it again or discard it. Nothing you speak into your wrist is thrown away silently.

Messaging
• Choosing who to message is far clearer. People at the same station are grouped together, and a station covering several people offers one option that
reaches all of them.
• Someone carrying two phones now appears once and receives your message on both.
• Everyone shows Online or Offline, and the list includes only people you can actually reach.
• The recipient list reopens with your previous recipients already selected.
• Arriving messages announce the sender's name, pause, then read the message — so you know who is calling without looking at the screen.
• Messages are now read aloud correctly while the app is in the background.

Map
• Trackers hidden by net control are now hidden in the app too, while staying in the list so you can still see them reporting.
• Long-pressing a tracker in the sidebar now zooms in as intended.
• Only the tracker that actually beaconed blinks.

Fixes
• The Start conversation button is no longer cut off at the bottom of the New message screen.

### 1.21.1+14 — 2026-08-05

Major improvements to the messaging system:
- Email-style inbox and view panels
- Voice dictation when composing messages
- Read-aloud option when viewing messages
- Message receipts: Sent, Received, Read
- Ability to attach photos to messages
- Messages received while offline are queued on the server.
The app checks for new versions.

### 1.20.2+11 — 2026-07-28

Beacons now report GPS accuracy and fix age, so the map can flag a position that's a coarse estimate or a stale cached fix instead of showing it as a
confident dot; trails no longer draw a straight line across a reporting gap.
Map tiles are now cached on our server to conform with map-provider policies.
