## What is Arcata?

Arcata is your household's finance book: rent, salary, subscriptions and
insurance book themselves, spontaneous expenses are logged in two taps,
everything is categorised, and the whole book is shareable with a partner or
family over iCloud. No account, no server but your own iCloud — your numbers
stay your numbers.

Overview
• Remaining: what's actually left at month's end, as one number
• Income and expenses, split into regular and spontaneous
• Spending trend over recent months as a chart
• Expenses by category as a pie chart, including regular costs still due
• Browse between months, including forward into a forecast

Bookings
• Log an expense or income in seconds
• Quick-capture: hold and drag right on the existing "+" button
• Automatic categorisation from the title, learns from your corrections
• Filter by month, category or free text — reset with one tap
• Outstanding recurring bookings show up ahead of time in the list
• Deleting an auto-generated recurring booking asks for confirmation first

Recurring Costs & Income
• Set up rent, salary, subscriptions and insurance once, then it runs itself
• Monthly or yearly, with a start date and an optional end date
• Spread out uneven expenses like groceries or gas evenly across the month,
instead of all at once on one fixed day
• Pause instead of delete when something changes
• Export and import as a file, e.g. when switching devices

Budgets
• Set a monthly limit per category
• See the fill level at a glance, warned before a limit is exceeded

Savings Tips (Optional)
• On request: AI-powered, personalized savings tips based on your spending,
  with an estimated monthly saving
• Choose between OpenAI or right on your device (Apple Intelligence)
• Off by default — only visible once you pick a provider in Settings

Households, Sharing & Sync
• Keep several households side by side and switch with a single tap
• Share via iCloud with a partner or family, synced in real time
• Available on all your Apple devices

No ads, no analytics, no third-party trackers. Savings tips are entirely
optional — with no provider chosen, nothing runs through an AI service.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.8.0 — 2026-10-19

New
• Sort bookings by amount: in the filter's "Sort order", "By amount" lists the
biggest bookings of the selected month first, with the date underneath.
  Planned bookings are included.

Improved
• The spending trend is now its own strip above the month pages and swipes
with the page — from year to year in the year view.
• In the trend, each block of six months has round, labelled scale lines.
• In the year view, a tap on a bar shows that month's amount.

### 1.7.0 — 2026-10-07

New
• Year view: the "Month | Year" switch in the Overview shows a whole year at
a glance — Remaining, income, expenses, categories and budgets — and you
swipe from year to year. The chart shows all twelve months, and a tap on a
  bar opens that month.
• Hide categories from the chart: every category row now has an eye. Take
rent out of the pie chart, for example, to compare the remaining expenses
better. "More" has its own eye for everything folded into it. The choice
lasts for the current session, and the row stays in the list.
• New "Selected month only" filter in Bookings: the list stays on the chosen
month instead of loading more months as you scroll. When you tap a category
in the Overview it turns on automatically, so the list matches the amount
  you tapped.

Improved
• The month capsule in Bookings names the month whose bookings are on screen
right now, and after you pick a month it stays on that month until you
  scroll.
• When you pick a month, its neighbouring months are ready at once, and the
list stays on the month you picked.

Fixed
• Picking a month in Bookings: an empty or short month showed an empty list
or landed on a completely different month, and after picking an older month
the newer ones above it were missing. Sometimes the list also landed on a
  booking from the following month.
• In time zones west of Greenwich (e.g. the Americas), month names and due
dates were sometimes shown too early — as the previous month or day.
• Bookings with "Baumarkt" (hardware store) in the title were automatically
categorised as "Groceries" — they now land under "Household".
• With "Selected month only" and a future month, planned bookings of the
months before it showed up too — now only the chosen month's do.
• In the spending trend the same amount looked different in different blocks
of six months — blocks with similarly high months now share one scale. Only
a block with a clearly higher month (a December, say) scales on its own.

### 1.6.1 — 2026-10-05

Improved
• Outstanding income and expenses in the Overview now expand separately,
  instead of sharing one list.
• The spending trend is easier to read in light mode: grid and month names
are lighter, grey bars now match the grid color instead of plain grey.
• Disclosure rows like "Show details" and "Outstanding" now read as links
  and expand without jank.

Fixed
• For evenly-spread recurring costs (e.g. groceries), "Outstanding" and
"Remaining" still showed the full remaining amount instead of just the
part not yet accrued — now correctly prorated.

### 1.6.0 — 2026-10-03

New
• New Overview: the whole page now belongs to one month. Swipe left or
right to glide between months — or tap a bar in the spending trend at the
top. The selected month is highlighted there, with its amount.
• Budgets now sit right with their categories: amount, fill level and limit
in one row. Categories with a tight or exceeded budget always come first,
  the rest unfolds under "More".
• A title is now optional: for small everyday spending where only the
category matters, leave it empty — the booking is then named after its
category. In the form, the amount now comes first and gets the keyboard
  right away.
• After an import, the skipped rows can be reviewed.

Improved
• In the bookings list the category now shows as an icon in front of the
title, instead of repeating the category name below it. A note sits
right under the title, the repeat symbol behind it.
• Saving is no longer possible with an amount of 0.
• Identical rows within one import file are now imported as separate
bookings (e.g. two coffees on the same day); only bookings that already
  exist are skipped.
• Quick-capture (hold-and-drag) now starts after 0.3 seconds instead of
  noticeably later.
• Forms and settings now follow Apple's conventions: an X to cancel, a
checkmark to save — the checkmark is only active once there is something
to save. With unsaved changes, Arcata asks before discarding them.
Categories and budgets open inside Settings instead of stacking further
  windows on top.

Fixed
• During a CSV import, bookings could end up in a different category
afterwards when the same title appeared under several categories in the
file — each booking now keeps the category confirmed during the import.
• A recurring booking could appear twice when two household members opened
the app at the same time — the duplicate is now merged automatically.
• When importing recurring costs, rows with entries like "Every 3rd month"
were skipped — they are now recognised.
• The month navigation arrows were hard to see in dark mode.

### 1.5.1 — 2026-09-30

Fixed
• During a CSV import, bookings could end up in a different category
afterwards when the same title appeared under several categories in the
file — each booking now keeps the category confirmed during the import.
