## What is As I See It?

Experience vision loss through 12 eye condition simulations using your iPhone camera. See the world as someone with Retinitis Pigmentosa, Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, or Macular Degeneration would see it, in real time, with adjustable severity. Build empathy, train caregivers, educate families, or understand your own diagnosis.

Created by a 16-year-old living with Retinitis Pigmentosa, As I See It brings authentic understanding to vision impairment. This isn't a generic filter app. It's a respectful, medically informed tool designed to foster empathy and awareness.

Point your camera at anything, a face, a street sign, a menu, your living room, and instantly see how it appears through the eyes of someone with vision loss. Adjust the severity slider to experience early, moderate, and advanced stages of each condition.

EYE CONDITIONS INCLUDED:

RETINAL CONDITIONS
• Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) — Night blindness and tunnel vision
• Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) — Central vision loss
• Diabetic Retinopathy — Dark spots and blur from diabetes
• Stargardt Disease — Central blind spot in young adults
• Rod-Cone Dystrophy — Progressive loss of detail and colour
• Retinal Detachment — A dark curtain advancing across vision

OPTIC & NEUROLOGICAL
• Glaucoma — Gradual peripheral vision loss, often unnoticed at first
• Optic Neuritis — Dimmed vision and colour desaturation

CORNEAL & INFLAMMATORY
• Keratoconus — Irregular corneal distortion, ghosting and light streaks
• Uveitis — Hazy vision, floaters and light sensitivity

COLOUR & LIGHT SENSITIVITY
• Achromatopsia — Complete colour blindness with extreme light sensitivity
• Ocular Albinism — Severe light sensitivity and reduced acuity

WHO USES AS I SEE IT:
• Patients and families understanding new diagnoses
• Caregivers and healthcare workers training for empathy
• Educators teaching accessibility and inclusion
• Designers testing interfaces for low-vision users
• Advocates raising awareness for vision loss

No simulation can replicate lived experience, and some symptoms, such as difficulty seeing in low light, are not represented visually. Each filter strives for respectful accuracy, and we continue to refine them.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.4.0 — 2026-08-17

Version 1.4.0

Rebuilt vision simulations

Glaucoma has been rebuilt from the ground up. Early stages now show little or no change, reflecting how glaucoma usually goes unnoticed at first, and peripheral vision then fades gradually into a soft grey haze rather than cutting off at a hard edge.

Macular Degeneration now renders its central blind spot as a uniform grey blur that darkens as severity rises, with the colour artefacts removed.

Stargardt Disease is considerably stronger at higher severities, better reflecting the central vision loss the condition causes.

Ocular Albinism now drives camera exposure directly, so bright scenes wash out the way they do for people with the condition.

A clearer condition list

Glaucoma is now a single condition rather than being split by subtype, and Albinism is named Ocular Albinism. Several narrow colour vision entries have been consolidated. Rod-Cone Dystrophy has been added back while we continue to refine it.

Sharing

Shared photos now keep the aspect ratio you framed, instead of being cropped to a square. The descriptive text and app link are now optional, so you can share just the image if you prefer. Where a condition involves symptoms the simulation does not yet render, such as difficulty seeing in low light, the shared text now says so.

Landscape and navigation

The app now works in landscape on iPhone. There is also a clear way back to the camera after choosing a photo from your library.

Condition descriptions have been reviewed and updated across all supported languages.
