### 4/5 — Nearly Perfect

*2025-09-02, version 1.20.4*

Great app, I’m new to rowing and the technique challenges have really helped me.

As a techie, I also love the integration with my rowing machine.

If there were two things I’d say are nitpicks for me that doesn’t quite get to 5 star, it’s the following:

I’d like to increase my music volume from Apple Music. I often find the volume is way too low in between talking segments; sometimes it might as well be off. If there was a way to increase this, I’d be happy.

Secondly is the strokes per minute counter. I can be matching the video exactly and it’s always going out by 1, whether faster or slower. A fraction of a second difference to the video seems a bit harsh to keep flagging up red warnings on pace. For me it would probably work better on an average of say the last 5 strokes. It can be quite frustrating at the moment knowing I’m in sync with the video yet the pace fluctuates on every stroke.

### 5/5 — My lifeline

*2025-08-22, version 1.20.4*

Been a paying subscriber for almost 3 years. A huge fan of Coach Johan. Don’t laugh but at this point he feels like an old friend. I know the jokes, the motivational mantras and seemingly his personal journey with rowing from Cal to the top of Asensei HQ. I fully credit this app with my chase of the 2 million meter milestone. Coach Eric helped me get my form right and keep it right during the hardest session. The variety of workouts is fantastic. I can find a quick 25min workout for my busy days and 45 min endurance steady state rows for WFH days.

### 5/5 — Awesome row along app !

*2025-07-02, version 1.20.4*

Eric Murray is the best , Olympic Champion, Eric uses his rowing skills to create the perfect app , well worth the money to help you perfect your rowing technique, keep you in shape, and pressing forward to better your rowing skills. Back ground music , along with coaching makes workout go faster and keeps your mind off fatigue. Great app !

### 5/5 — Love This!

*2025-06-23, version 1.20.3*

Love the interaction and coaching! I have had my dynamic Concept 2 a little over a year and wanting to get light enough for a shell again. Love the structure and feedback. I believe it isa game changer for me, especially as I cannot always get to the water. Thank you!

Game changer!

### 3/5 — Italian language

*2025-05-28, version 1.20.3*

Please do it in Italian too

### 3/5 — Sehr gute Ruder-App mit Abstrichen

*2025-05-16, version 1.20.3*

...leider bricht zuletzt bei Nutzung über iPad wiederholt die Verbindung zum PM5 ab. Dadurch unvollständige Trainingsaufzeichnung. Ärgerlich bei monatlichen Abo.

### 5/5 — Tough but fair

*2025-04-21, version 1.20.3*

Eric is great to row along with. He doesn’t say anything unless it’s about technique and is encouraging throughout. This was my first session on his 6k program and it was tough but not so tough to put me off. I did question whether I could train alongside a legend in rowing and keep up and I surprised myself. Recommend this if you’re looking to up your game on the erg.

### 2/5 — Music

*2025-03-31, version 1.20.3*

Not bad trainer wise, but the app should have an introduction on how to change music instead of forcing you to look for it.

### 3/5 — Some good coaching vids, app remains pretty awful

*2025-01-28, version 1.20.3*

Good to see the AI claim has been dropped. App is an odd chat style interface of a rowing pace tables calculator combined with erg metrics. Doesn’t give any useful insight or comparison of previous performances of same workout. Does not analyse technique. Really could be great but hasn’t been worked on in a long time. Only use it for the Johan Quie workouts, but the editing on some of those is not great.

### 5/5 — Whoopie

*2024-12-22, version 1.20.3*

Brilliant, i’m new rowing it’s great to follow a program and to have somebody virtually with you brilliant idea excited for my next session

### 5/5 — Great program

*2024-12-02, version 1.20.2*

Variety of good coaches with a variety of workouts. Adjusts to your ability level.

### 5/5 — Great intro so far

*2024-09-10, version 1.20.1*

New to rowing. This has been a great intro.

Was a little confusing connecting the asensei app, the rower, the erglog, and apple health, but that is probably on me and the apple universe more than the app. And eventually, when you have it set up, the app even reminds you to just hit connect on the ergrower and everything syncs up easily. My daughter even has a separate account that tracks her now. Assuming i could even find a gym with an ergrower (with pm5) and easily continue on the app, connecting to that gym rower.

The lessons/workouts are sequential, and I love how it processes your performance from a previous workout (or part of the workout) and then benchmarks you for pushing yourself on the next workout/part.

The screen layout and metrics are easy and intuitive. Nice that it flashes/highlights a metric when you are behind or ahead the intended workout pace.

Also, being reminded of form (either by watching the coach on the rower, or verbally from the app) is super helpful. A push with the legs is worth so much more than a pull with the arms.

I’ve only rowed so far with he intro program and coach Eric, but look forward to more.

And so far no paywall; though surely this app pays for itself somehow, so I’m assuming it will start asking me for some payment or upgrades for access to higher level stuff at some point.

My only desire is that it would be awesome to have music that had a cadence that matched the desired stroke rate. Tricky to do, I know, but with modern tech…wouldn’t it be nice.

### 5/5 — The best rowing app

*2024-08-26, version 1.20.1*

We’ve had a Concept rower for 10 years. And I did rowing on and off all the time. After looking at multiple rowing apps, my wife and I decided to give Asensei a try. Eric’s instructions on first perfecting the technique made all the difference. It takes a while to really get the explosive burst even at low stroke frequency, but once you have, it leads to huge improvements. And the connection between rower and app, with ongoing on screen monitoring and instructions, helps a lot, also to develop the right breathing technique.
Now we are at the point of using the different instructors and their programs to bring variety in our rowing to avoid boredom. I can only highly recommend Asensei rowing.

### 5/5 — This keeps me motivated

*2024-07-23, version 1.20.1*

At first I was a terrible rower but I kept at it and the app kept resetting my splits to keep it challenging. Now my form and stamina have improved and I’m super judgy of everyone else at the gym that gets in the tower and flops around for 5 minutes and gets off. I went so far as to buy my own erg

### 4/5 — Enjoying the app, just a few niggles

*2024-07-06, version 1.20.1*

Enjoying the rowing coaching that this App provides. As a beginner, it's nice to be able to visually follow coaches on screen as they talk you through the sessions. I find the price a little expensive so not sure if I will subscribe long term and I'm also having issues when connecting to a bluetooth speaker from my iPad. The App sometimes goes silent during workouts. This seems to happen during transitions within the workout ?

### 5/5 — Year 4

*2024-05-31, version 1.20.0*

I just renewed for a fourth year. In 2021 at the age of 56 I started rowing for the first time. I had purchased a Concept 2 Erg and I was looking for a program to train and teach me and keep me motivated. I tried a couple of things and then found Asensai. Great program. The app works well. I use it on my iPad. The videos keep me engaged. I love that my progress is tracked and I can look back to see how I have improved.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — UX/UI is useless

*2026-02-04, version 1.21.0*

Urgent UX/UI update needed. It’s so frustrating not being able to watch videos without connecting your device to the rowing machine. The instruction video on how to connect your device keeps running forever, and there’s no way to skip it and get to the actual content.

### 1/5 — Unfriendly application

*2026-01-07, version 1.21.0*

Very difficult to work with this application

### 1/5 — Videos won’t load and zero customer service

*2025-01-09, version 1.20.3*

This app never worked. The videos would not load and play and there is essentially zero customer service. There is no easy way to get in contact with someone in a timely manner to resolve a technical issue. I spent the time submitting a ticket and got zero response. Unfortunate as the odd time I could get a video to play I liked it.

### 1/5 — Buggy

*2024-07-02, version 1.20.1*

I’m tired of the program being buggy. Freezing, loosing history and past programs.

Get your ap up to speed and coded better

### 1/5 — Hard to use

*2023-12-12, version 1.20.0*

Really difficult to use. The user interface is cryptic and convoluted. I was trying to do a test work out, but never actually made it there. Maybe stick with standard UX patterns rather than try to reinvent the wheel. Perhaps if you have a lot of time and you’re very patient, this app would work well for you.

### 1/5 — Need to improve pausing and navigating a workout

*2023-06-22, version 1.19.2*

Kinda mad that I had to pause my workout and then it forced me to start the section again. Why?

### 1/5 — Soll das eine UI Revolution sein?

*2023-02-11, version 1.19.1*

So sieht sicher nicht das UI Design der Zukunft aus! Wer soll den diesem Chatbot Wahnsinn folgen? Habt allen ernstes über Monate an diesem Schrott geschraubt und das Projekt so in den Store gestellt?

### 1/5 — Didn’t like

*2023-01-22, version 1.19.0*

Not fun to use and insufferably many emails.

### 1/5 — Not working

*2022-06-16, version 1.18.0*

This app does not work. I don’t have their row machine and I don’t need to connect it to the app. And I can’t skip it. The vidéo is repeating over and over to connect the apparel !!??

### 1/5 — No Apple Health integration. Trial is too limited

*2021-10-02, version 1.16.0*

The lack of Apple Health integration is pretty much a full blocker for me. In addition, the trial is so limited that I really wasn’t able to see how useful this app actually is. With it’s connectivity to my C2 rower, I had hoped it would give me more input than just spm and splits timing. Maybe if you pay the full subscription, it does, but I am not forking over $150 per year just to find out.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — The best rowing app

*2026-08-11, version 1.21.0*

This is a must have for anyone who enjoys rowing but needs a little extra push. The coaching is great and keeps the workouts interesting and keeps me motivated to keep going. This app has dramatically improved my rowing for CrossFit and helps me stay in shape on my off days. Highly recommend coach Johan’s workouts! I also love his short 15 minute workouts and recovery workouts for my days “off”.

### 5/5 — Notes from a newbie

*2026-02-18, version 1.21.0*

I’m not unfit but have never rowed before and have been slacking on the cardio side for a while. I purchased a fluid rower and downloaded Asensei after doing a little research. I love the app and the instructor led workouts. It has transformed my experience of rowing and given me a real data led focus to help me improve form, fitness and performance.

### 5/5 — The best rowing app

This is a must have for anyone who enjoys rowing but needs a little extra push. The coaching is great and keeps the workouts interesting and keeps me motivated to keep going. ### 5/5 — From basic to advanced

*2026-02-05, version 1.21.0*

Great rowing app for beginners and experienced.

Covers the basics well, and how to get the MAXIMUM power from your strokes.

Going fast isn’t all about power, Asensei shows you where to find efficiency savings which gives you more speed with the same effort. They cover the technique really well.

It’s helped me enormously with my fitness over the last 3 years.

Numerous coaches and countless workouts. This app adjusts your training based on you past performance. It really does get the best out of you and knows when to ask you for more.

Love it.

### 5/5 — I LOVE this app

*2026-01-03, version 1.21.0*

UPDATE: Been using this for multiple years now. Still find it super valuable and motivating. Coach Johan Quie is fantastic. I haven’t hesitated to renew. Original Review: Brand new to rowing. I tried a couple of different apps and locked in on this one. It’s got an awesome variety of workouts from instructional to straight up tough workouts. The personalization keeps me from slacking off and the music keeps me pumped. You can’t help but get fit and improve your performance with this app. Plus I love the weekly update blogs/emails and they keep adding new content. 10 stars. Excellent value

### 5/5 — Data-driven erging

*2025-12-01, version 1.20.5*

Great app that allows structured and deliberate improvement in skill. I found especially helpful since I had no experience with erging. Stand-alone workouts as well as multi-week programs with focus on technique and continuous improvement. Strongly recommend!

### 5/5 — Great rowing app

*2025-11-02, version 1.20.5*

Love the app. It keeps challenging me on the Concept 2. great workout of rowing on the water is not an option.
Nevertheless, would love to get additional training programs.
