However I have one extremely minor concern, more like a question: why are the signs “mouthed” in the videos? My ASL teacher at school used to tell me that “mouthing” and signing “is not ASL” and that there’s “something” against it in the Deaf community. However, I have some possible answers to my questions, and would like confirmation. Perhaps this is just to help people learn to lip read, or at least stay sharp at it. Maybe people feel more comfortable this way? Although I feel like it’s just teaching them a less socially acceptable form of signing. Just wondering if I’m wrong, or if there’s a definite reason. Anyways, I love this app. It’s beyond useful. I decided uninstall it and then install it back it’s working ### 1/5 — Just standalone words? *2020-11-15, version 4.7* I didn’t realize this app doesn’t include any phrases until after purchasing. Vocabulary is nice to have but you can also just look that up online. Disappointed that I spent my money on an app without helpful phrases. ### 1/5 — Bad signing *2020-04-30, version 4.4* I had a background in sign language before I started using this app. I haven’t signed in a long time, so I wanted to refresh my memory. The person signing in this video is not good at doing sign language. Her finger spelling is not clear and I think this would be very frustrating for a new signer to learn from. I’m upset I spent money on this because it’s not a good place to learn sign language. ### 2/5 — Not too good *2024-04-12, version 5.9* Bare bones dictionary with very little context as to the sense of the word; eg. if you look up WORK it doesn't say whether this can be used to mean "this method works" or "my phone works." It would help to know up front what region of the US or Canada all these signs are from, as they have very little in common with the New York style of ASL I am currently learning. Quizzes would be more helpful if they were not multiple choice. A "reveal answer" button would be more useful as I'd have to think more; the choices are so random that only one is even close and it's a giveaway. Thank you. ### 2/5 — Terrible organization. I should see groupings like Time Expressions Question Words / Wh words Conjunctions / Connectors Quantitative Words Instead you get “Verbs”. Nouns. Etc. too vague and general. ### 2/5 — ⚠️WARNING: NOT AT ALL ACCURATE⚠️ *2023-09-06* The only reason why this app has more than 1 star is because of its ease of use in comparison to other services, and it’s pay-once instead of subscription based like ASLDeafined. I am an ASL student of 3 years, learning from first a licensed interpreter and then a Deaf teacher. While I am not at all an expert, I know my fair share, enough that I could converse with a Deaf person with ease. Because of this, I can say with confidence that many of the signs on this app are not accurate at all. And not just simple mistakes, like backwards hand movements or incorrect parts of the body, but signs that are nowhere like the real ones. For example, the sign the app claims means “cool”, which is normally signed with the thumb of a 5 hand touching your chest and wiggling the fingers, is actually the sign for apple, which is the first knuckle of an x handshape on the cheek. Or the sign the app claims means “about” is actually the sign for “area” or “park”. If you’re looking to learn ASL, take a course at your local university or community college, learn from members of the community, or invest in ASL Deafined, a service by the Deaf community and interpreters for students. ### 2/5 — Disappointed *2021-12-04, version 5.1* I read the reviews and thought this would be perfect, being someone who goes non-speaking at times and needs to learn to communicate in other ways. I’m disappointed as I don’t believe this a Deaf or HoH person who is demonstrating the signs, as the mouthing of the words as well as it’s distracting. I wish to support the Deaf and HoH community by learning true ASL, not cultural appropriation. ### 2/5 — Contains maybe half of any dictionary *2021-02-14, version 4.9* Sure the app does the bare minimum of showing the signed version of words, but it’s rarely ever that specific words in ASL are available on here. I found myself reading her lips more than watching her sign. Missing: There are few ways to sign the same word. This app apparently shows only one. Which is a big gap. Can this feature be added? 2. Quizzes: the signer is mouthing the word which becomes a big hint or answer. This reduces the value of the quizzes. Let me know if these features will be added in future? The app allows us to simply see how to sign a word or common phrase. We use other apps and a tutor to learn ASL, but quickly found that an accurate and easy to use dictionary is a must have. I was hoping (and this might be a stupid suggestion) that you could implement a box, that could be next to the buttons on the definition page, that would be a note? I think, for me at least, it would be helpful to get a description on the way a word is signed. For example when some words you shape your hand into the first letter of that word and then sign, it might be really helpful for some people to remember signs better if there’s a small description? Idk if it’d be helpful to most but I just wanted to throw it out there.
