## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Don’t waste your time with this app

*2026-08-12*

I’m hard of hearing and want to learn ASL but I don’t have the money for a subscription and now I can’t access lesson beyond basics without paying for them. I’m so discouraged from learning ASL now because every time I try to learn it’s behind a pay wall so I’ll never have access to full communication through ASL and I’ll have to rely on lip reading or hoping I hear someone just enough to understand them.

**Developer response:** We’re really sorry to hear that you’re feeling discouraged. We truly believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn ASL, and we understand how important accessibility and communication are.

Otty does offer a free trial, so eligible users can try the full experience before committing to a subscription. Apple determines eligibility for introductory offers, so the trial may not be available if it has already been used on that Apple ID.

If the subscription is still outside your budget, please reach out to us at support@otty-learning.com Tell us a little about your situation, and we’ll see if there’s anything we can do to help.

We’re really glad you want to learn ASL, and we hope we can help you continue that journey. ❤️

### 1/5 — Innacurate

*2026-08-11, version 3.9.6*

I've been using a few apps to help me learn ASL so I can communicate with my deaf neighbor. The first lesson already had a lot of inaccurate signs so I stopped. I should've made sure this was made by deaf people before I installed.

### 1/5 — Love the concept

*2026-08-10*

I catch myself, only looking at the people’s mouths and not looking at the word hand movement and not helpful. I’m just picking words out that their mouth I’m not learning anything so to be honest I should just give this app one star you could easily change that because all they have to do is not move their mouths because most of the time people don’t have that to go by mouths when talking to somebody who ACTUALLY USE ASL!! horrible idea of teaching somebody ASL through mouth movements easy fix though BUT THIS APP IS NOT WORTH A DOLLAR AT THIS POINT! Like I said easy fix

**Developer response:** Thank you for sharing your feedback. We completely understand your concern, and we agree that the hand movements are the most important part to focus on when learning ASL.

There is, however, an important distinction in ASL that may not be obvious at first. Facial and mouth movements are actually part of ASL grammar and are called non-manual markers or mouth morphemes. They can add meaning to a sign, such as describing size, manner, intensity, distance, or other grammatical information. Some ASL signs even require a specific mouth movement as part of their correct production.

At the same time, this does not mean that every ASL sign should simply be "spoken" with the mouth in English. English mouthing and ASL mouth morphemes are two different things. Our goal is to teach the visual and grammatical aspects of ASL, including the role of non-manual markers, rather than asking learners to rely on lip-reading.

We appreciate your feedback because it highlights how important it is to make the distinction between the hands and non-manual components clearer for beginners. We'll keep this in mind as we improve the learning experience.

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2026-08-08, version 3.9.6*

Literally the third sign is wrong-the sign for ‘my’ is not the same as ‘I’ or ‘me.’ The first sentence signs the question correctly, but doesn’t indicate if you’re supposed to write it in English or ASL gloss. It doesn’t matter, because it counts both as wrong.

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2026-08-07, version 3.9.5*

I was not given a 7 day review but was charged immediately The app is very simplistic and too easy for me as I know some sign but for a beginner it doesn’t offer practice but requires guessing and that’s not a good way to learn. I wrote twice asking about refund and got no response POOR app with NO assistance. Go with Lingvano much better deal

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2026-08-02, version 3.9.3*

Was not helpful for my special needs son and I was charged after canceling the subscription and can’t get my money back.

### 1/5 — Not enough like Duolingo…

*2026-07-27*

I loved the app, for the first three lessons.

First off, it’s a great app for learning. But, unlike Duolingo (that it claims to be the ASL version of), you HAVE to PAY.

Right now, in order to continue, I have to lay out $99…. I don’t have $99….

So I am missing out because this app doesn’t do what Duolingo does, and have ad support.

I’ve never had to pay for Duolingo, and we shouldn’t have to pay for this.

Also, some of the signs are wrong, or it assumes you know signs making you guess.

Lessons are a little long, not like Duolingo’s. BUT on the plus side, I can let the app sit in the background, and come back to it an hour or so later if I want, and do not have to start over.

Other than that, I like it, it was fun, while it lasted…

**Developer response:** Thank you for such detailed and thoughtful feedback. We’re really glad you enjoyed the first three lessons and found Otty fun and useful.

We understand your frustration about the subscription, especially when you’re comparing Otty with apps that use a different business model. Developing and maintaining ASL learning content, including video lessons and teacher-reviewed materials, comes with ongoing costs, but we’re always looking for ways to make learning more accessible.

Regarding the signs you mentioned, we take accuracy very seriously. ASL also has regional and community variations, but if you come across a sign that you believe is incorrect, please send us the details at support@otty-learning.com. We’re always happy to investigate and review specific examples with our teachers.

We also appreciate your feedback about lesson length and the guessing exercises. We’re continuously adding and improving lessons and practice to make Otty more useful for learners at different levels. Thank you again for giving us a chance! 🌟

### 1/5 — You aren’t learning anything

*2026-07-22, version 3.9.1*

### 1/5 — Incorrect signs

*2026-07-06, version 3.8.7*

### 1/5 — Good for a bit

*2026-07-01, version 3.8.6*

The app is great so far, I'm only on day 2 but have learned a lot this far. It's repetitive & has the option to slow down the instructors movement. I'm really hoping to start using ASL in my everyday life & for my kids.
