It has served him well, but we prefer the layout that was used in previous versions of this app. The very large speakerphone button (that was more than twice the size of the other buttons) definitely made it easier for him to use this app. The old layout was already very clean--I do not understand why it had to be changed. Also, it is nearly impossible to contact the makers of this app. There's no contact email to be found. Why is communication so difficult? ### 4/5 — Use during a phone call??? *2013-10-04, version 3.4* The support website is busted and will not accept feedback. Does anyone know if it is possible to use this app during a phone call? I tried and it did not work. My guess is that it is because Apple does not allow 3rd party apps to work on top of their built in apps. Are there any apps that might be able to do this? I would LOVE to see this in an update! March 4,2013. Downloaded an update today, I am so disappointed with the new look,it is very confusing for my son who has a disability. We also lost some very important writing of my son's that was on the favourites!!!!! Can we recover our writing in favourites???or can we go back to the previous look? ### 3/5 — Like it *2012-10-26, version 2.43* Assistive Chat has been my main communication app for six months. I have the upgrade too. The MOST HELPFUL change would be to add an auto correct feature. Predictive text appearing before word completion and added with the space bar would be helpful. Separation of run on, connected words, by a space, as appears in most programs would be very helpful. Adding contractions is necessary too. Double tapping on a misspelled word should give three options for correct word, as in most other apps. These minor changes would be a tremendous help. I am hopeful. ### 4/5 — Really great app! *2012-07-13, version 2.43* The only things I would add to it is a voice pitch and the options for more voices. With other apps out there they offer other voices than just the ones that are built in even though you have to pay for them but they are not expensive either. Other than that it's great! I had difficulty installing it on my new iPad. Luckily, I have another app on my iPad to help me communicate. Really miss the large speak it button for son w/ autism. That's why we chose this app ### 2/5 — One step forward two steps back *2013-03-06, version 3.0* We were a bit disappointed with the upgrades. The nice simple interface with the large speaker is gone (this was it's main edge over the competition). It now has a layout similiar to Speakit (which is a fraction of the cost). The menu buttons can not be made larger for those with mild motor impairments. They haven't added the ability to increase the font size of typed text. No categories... Oh well at least you can use speak selection within the app to get the better IOS voice. Oh and dIfferent colours on the favourites is a nice touch. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Great for My Nonverbal Autistic Son! *2014-01-12, version 3.60* I love this app because my son has the ability to communicate to anyone around him with the help of the "word prediction" feature. As a parent, I like it because I can store his favorite phrases and I can also access the most recent messages. The voices are not annoying or to robotic. I would recommend the app for non verbal autistic children that have basic reading comprehension skills. ### 5/5 — Assistive Express v3.4 *2013-09-14, version 3.4* Assistive Express v3.4 does work fine with iPad 2 running iOS v6.1.3. To make it work, uninstall current version. Then in AppStore, select 'purchased' apps and find Assistive Express again. Click cloud icon to download the program. Let download finish completely, it is a long download. Make sure the iPad does not turn off or go to sleep during the download. After completion, the app will run fine. You will be first greeted with a dark 'how to' screen and then press 'start' to begin program. Your first install/update did not complete properly which gave you the problem. Hope this helps. I love this one. It has a voice that sounds real and not like a computer voice. ### 5/5 — Best AAC program for adults without voice. *2012-04-06, version 2.43* I lost my voice to cancer 4 years ago. Communicating with steno pad and pen was frustrating, ESP with my bad handwriting. As soon as iPad came out I got one and scoured the apps for an easy to use AAC program that would basically allow me text to speech. Of all the AAC programs I have tried assistive chat provides the best bang for the buck. The voices are not robotic, they are expressive and best of all they are loud. These are the loudest voices I have gotten in any app. They are not drowned out by normal background noise. The word prediction is very good. That and able to store favorites makes this the full meal deal. I have paid much more for several programs and have not been nearly as satisfied. My wish list is for more voice options and maybe some quick hit buttons. For my hole life I ahead AAC device to help me to communicate. The first AAC device I ahead had the touch talker from prentke romich company. And Will I gone to high school I use the Delta Talker made my the same people the prentke romich company. Now them AAC devices did work good but the them have some problems 1 is them is big I can't pick them up myself and 2. Them did not help you to spell words you click on pictures to make words and sentences. That is good for communicating. But my big problem is my teachers did not know how to teach me to communicate with my AAC devices I had to teach them how them worked. So my reading and spelling is not good because with my speech problem my teachers did not know how to teach me how to read or write with the others students in my classroom. I think if I had the iPad and the assistivechat App on it at the time it will help me out:) with my reading and with my writhing:) OK let me explain what is new in the assistance chat version 1.2 when you spell a word words will pop up on screen in the word the list now if you type a new word is not in list. And if use the Space bar it will member the word in the word list.
