## What is Ataraxia?

Tell the Stoics what is wrong. They answer — a letter to read, or ten minutes to hear.

A thinking tool built on 2,300 years of Stoic philosophy. Not therapy, not meditation, not a diagnosis — reason applied to disturbance. It reaches you in three ways.

THE LETTER · Write, and a Stoic writes back
Say the thing you have been turning over, and a letter comes back, written to what you actually said. It meets your trouble with what Seneca and Marcus Aurelius already knew about it, and names one thing to try today.

Write it, or speak it and let the app write it down. The reply quotes the passages themselves, word for word and cited — never paraphrased, never invented. It can be read aloud, kept in your Marginalia, or saved as a page, like a letter on paper.

THE ANTIDOTE · Ten minutes, read aloud
Some nights a passage is not enough. Then a voice stays with one feeling for ten minutes — the argument the Stoics made against it, read to you, so you can just listen.

Ten readings, one for each feeling this app knows: grief, anger, overthinking, wanting control, and six more. Each is composed for that feeling in particular, in five movements that move from where you are to somewhere steadier. Each downloads once and then lives on your phone, so it plays with no signal.

THE PASSAGE · One each day
Chosen for the feeling you are in. Half a minute to sit inside it, with a slow breath if you want one — that is the whole practice. Then, if you like, a private note of what it stirred.

THE LIBRARY
880 passages from 42 writers: Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, and those who carried their argument forward, from Montaigne to Emerson. Meet each of them — profiles, works and eras. Everything you keep gathers in your Marginalia, searchable. Any passage can be read aloud in one of three unhurried voices, with playback controls on your lock screen.

EVERYWHERE YOU GLANCE
A morning passage on a gentle notification, your home screen and your lock screen. Home-screen and lock-screen widgets, StandBy on your nightstand, and an Apple Watch app with complications.

WHAT IS FREE
One Letter a month. One complete Antidote a month — and the first movement is free in every room, always. The daily passage, the sitting, the reflection, your history and your patterns. Saving a Letter as a page: free, and always will be.

THE INNER CITADEL
Letters whenever you need them. All ten Antidotes in full. The complete library, readings aloud without a cap, Marginalia export and the premium widgets.

YOURS, PRIVATELY
No account and no login. Your reflections stay on your device. What you write for a Letter is sent once to compose the reply and is kept nowhere but on your phone. Anonymous usage analytics help improve the app; they never include what you write, and you can turn them off in Settings. The full policy: https://mariuscimpoesu1981.github.io/AtaraxiaRepo/privacy/

A NOTE OF CARE
Ataraxia is philosophy, not therapy. It does not diagnose or treat any condition, and it is not a substitute for professional help. If you are in crisis, the app links to crisis resources — please reach out to support near you.

SUBSCRIPTION
The Inner Citadel is an auto-renewing subscription, available monthly or annually, each with a free trial. Prices are shown in the app before purchase. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel anytime in your Apple Account settings.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.0 — 2026-10-13

- The library is three times larger: 880 passages from 42 writers — the Stoics, and those who carried their argument forward, from Montaigne to Emerson.
- "Next set" now walks through a whole room instead of returning to the same few passages.
- A letter can now quote any writer in the library, not only the Stoics.
- And the first visit is shorter: one demonstration, not three.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-09-26

A new beginning. The first time you open Ataraxia it now shows you the three things it actually does, rather than describing them: write a sentence about what is troubling you and a Stoic writes back, quoting the passage that answers it. Sit with that passage for a moment. Then hear the reading for that same feeling, aloud.

Your letter can be saved as a page — like a letter, on paper — free, always.

Notifications now bring a passage, a Letter or an Antidote in turn.

### 1.2.2 — 2026-09-11

Ataraxia now gives you a reason to come back tomorrow.

Today's passage sits at the top of the home screen — the same one your widget and your morning notification carry. At the close of a reading, the app tells you what is already chosen for tomorrow: "Tomorrow: Epictetus, on what is not ours to keep." Every one of the quotes carries its own line.
The home-screen widget is properly introduced at last. It is free, it always was, and it now stays current on its own — fourteen days of passages, changing at midnight, whether or not you open the app.
Come back after a day away and Ataraxia remembers what you kept, sat with, or wrote about, and offers it to you again in one quiet line.
Nothing here is behind a paywall that was not before. The daily passage is yours, always.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-08-09

Passages you can actually read. We've modernised the English in over a hundred passages — the same arguments, without the Victorian scaffolding.

Better choices. The app now favours passages that suit what you're feeling, and rests ones you've just seen.

One emotion, one room. Sitting with a feeling keeps its colour through the whole session.

Also: evening notifications no longer repeat the morning's passage, and a crash when closing the app is fixed.

### 1.0 — 2026-07-09
