About
Nine stops through Nafplio, the port town that became the first capital of modern Greece.
Start on Syntagma Square, where a Venetian arsenal, Ottoman mosques and the first Greek parliament share the same few metres. Stand at the church door where Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias was shot in 1831. Climb to Palamidi, the Venetian fortress Greek fighters took in a single night in 1822, then come down to Acronauplia, whose walls reach back to the fourth century BC. The walk ends facing Bourtzi, the island fort that once held one end of the chain that closed the harbour.
Along the way: bronze armour more than 3,000 years old, a museum devoted to the komboloi, and the rebuilt Land Gate where King Otto was handed the keys to the city.
Every date is checked against municipal, Ministry of Culture or museum sources, and you walk the route at your own pace. The climb to Palamidi is steep and the fortress charges admission. Narration in English, German and Spanish.
