This has a unique flair and great ui. I do have problems with the deceptive free thing. I get your point on the previous model(3) stuff is there. But it really promotes and shines when you have the the iap, which are not bundled correctly, some are close, but many of them really need to be either free( like the everything’s free title), or in proper iap collection/logical method. I bought a few iap and then I could open a demo project that needed another clock iap to show how good it “can get” . As a basic example I can only use Version 3 as then I can open those lessons or patchstorage etc. so despite my complaints I guess it’s cause I feel the argument for the new all free version really hurts this. I know you can rock it as is with no iap but then you can’t demonstrate any great patches right from the start, in that regard I feel 3 is way better. Audulus could be the best with some changes. Last thing: version 3 runs perfect and no crashes. Version 4 eats cpu and also just not solid with clock audio stutters. I know it’s because newer version is probably got ace stuff under the hood and my iPad lil old so maybe that one is on me ha. Don’t mean bad vibes though , I can stay happy with 3 and it’s still a beast. ### 4/5 — almost perfect app *2026-06-18, version 4.7* everything is working great! the only issue I have is Im unable to upload any files to the memory node with my phone. other than that the app is really cool ### 4/5 — COOL!!!! *2026-03-21, version 4.7* I forgot I ever installed this, then opened it in Ableton by accident. Then I got lost in it for hours. If you’re a music producer just starting to dip your toes into DSP, this is a must-try. This is honestly the perfect middle-ground between Formula, PlugData and Bitwig Grid; all available within a VST - and this one is much more math-centric, which feels much more intuitive for someone like me. HOWEVER - I wouldn’t be ready to spend money on it just yet as it has a few glaring issues: #1, you can save your presets, but there’s no ‘Load’ button. This may be accessed by the “Open user presets folder”, but for me this button does nothing. #2, basic DAW-compatible functions are absent. This is a HUGE pain, because if you accidentally press CMD+Z by muscle memory, and your last action in your DAW was to move or insert Audulus, your DAW receives the Undo command instead of the plugin and you lose ALL your work, even if you hit Redo. Complete reset. Opt+drag on modules does not duplicate. Plugin window is not resizable. Things like that. #3, the UI and customization leave a lot to be desired. Specifically the outer-edge section where things like Save, Load, Prefs, etc. are supposed to live - I forget what this is called but in Audulus this part is almost completely barren. Makes the whole thing feel like a beta version. If I felt negatively or indifferent about Audulus, I wouldn’t be writing all this. I would really love to see a more complete version of this plugin with the features I mentioned plus an addition of more modules such as FFT/IFFT conversion, granular buffering, and other things that are native to comparable apps. Looking forward to seeing this one evolve - I’ll be ready to give that 5-star review and tell all my music nerd friends about it. ### 4/5 — Cool design, menu filtering doesn’t function properly *2026-03-21, version 4.7* I really like the design but unfortunately the menus system is buggy on an iPhone 17 pro. In order to navigate to the free modules you have to scroll down past the pro ones, but the the tag system/ filtering window automatically closes after selection. There is an extensive amount of modules, but without that filtering being available it’s not very practical. Would be even interested in purchases pro modules if that issue was fixed. ### 2/5 — Why Would I Pay for MIDI I/O? *2025-05-15, version 4.6.3* It’s difficult to imagine why the developer thinks MIDI functionality should be behind a paywall. Have you looked at any other iOS music apps lately? Ever? Also, the persistent banner in the upper right corner urging users to upgrade to Pro is annoying. Make this smaller, minimizable, or make it disappear after the app is open for a few minutes. In-product help is totally absent, except for a fairly uninstructive tutorial. Figure out some kind of documentation- a tooltip or two would go a long ways. What happened to the long-hold menu with options like ‘Help’? Hard to see that this is much of an improvement for the typical user, beyond the slightly nicer looking UI. ### 3/5 — Infos on the App page are wrong. *2025-03-26, version 4.6.2* The App page says that the Base version contains the stand-alone or audio plugin (AUv3). However, what it doesn't say is that you need to be subscribed to open the AUv3, which is misinformation about what you pay for. ### 5/5 — Select and Import Buttons Do Not Work *2024-12-15, version 4.6* Fixed. Needed to update Audulus 4 ### 5/5 — Best modular synth on iOS *2024-12-15, version 4.6* This app is absolutely incredible and gives you all the tools you need to make literally any part of a synth if you want to get that involved. also an active community of people making patches so even if you just bought it to play with patches posted online, you’ve got virtually endless synths to play with. ### 3/5 — Select and Import Buttons Do Not Work *2024-12-07* When I create a patch I press the “+” button, but I cannot select patches to delete them. Clicking the “Select” or “Import” buttons does not do anything. **Developer response:** Hey! Could you get in touch with me about that. The buttons work fine on my end. I was simply frustrated after dropping 20 bucks, expecting to play with something cool. I'm gonna give them a chance to fix things. As a developer myself, I fully understand the challenges. I just really want to use the app!! Original text: Just purchased the app. When I open, I get a black screen. That's it. My ipad is up to date. What gives? Really hoping the developers are responsive. I'll update my review if they fix this right away. ### 5/5 — Doesn’t work at all in 18.1 *2024-10-24, version 4.5.1* Opens to the file browser, no modules, nothing. Tried deleting and reinstalling, nothing. It worked in the past and I liked it, hope I can figure this out. ### 5/5 — So Amazing This Exists *2024-10-21* Audulus is way more than an app. Not only it is simply the most powerful app in its class, and has pushed the bars so high that every single other app seems like a sad joke in comparison, Audulus is an unbelievable work of engineering. Mr. Holliday is by far, one of the greatest developers I know of, and have studied much of his public work. To make Audulus he has basically invented everything from the ground up and this is so lovely and amazing to look at. A custom UI library, scene graph, audio engine, how unbelievable is that? And then you have a full programming environment where you can literally build anything, not juts even musical things. I have little to do with modular synths most of the day, but I just open up my Audulus to look at it and just enjoy. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — SECURITY RISK *2026-07-20, version 4.7* I really wanted to try this app, it reminds me of some old Propellerheads software I had years ago called Reason. Unfortunately the camera comes on when the app is on. You can’t turn it off in permissions. You can turn off the microphone in permissions, but not the camera. I tried deleting it an reinstalling it to wipe the memory, no good, camera light still comes on. ### 1/5 — How many times are you going to try to get me to pay for this!? *2026-04-10, version 4.7* I’ve loved Audulus for a long time, I bought Audulus 3, I bought Audulus 4….went to use it after a while and now everything is behind a paywall again! I go to add a function generator it’s 9.99 for a pack of them I go to add a filter it’s another 9.99 for a filter pack? This is ridiculous! I’ve paid for this app twice already and now I’m expected to pay yet again but only this time pay piece by piece. I can’t justify supporting getting gouged and recharged like this regardless if it’s good or not…unless this is fixed I’m dropping Audulus and will just have to stick with MiRack. ### 1/5 — Subscription dead *2026-01-18, version 4.7* My yearly subscription is no longer valid because the dev is money hungry and killed it. Screwed out of money, will delete. Hate this business practice another gem ruined by greed! ### 1/5 — Ridiculous UI *2025-12-20, version 4.7* I couldn’t get to the second screen of the “Start Here” patch. Literally could not navigate to it. Buttons exist, why be cute with uncertain panning on the first user experience? ### 1/5 — Dead on IOS as of IOS 18 *2024-11-30* If you’re planning on purchasing this to use on an iOS device like an iPad, don’t. Works just fine on macOS but ever since the iOS 18 update, the application has stopped working. I’ve confirmed this with other forum users, which is very disappointing since I have an active subscription that I cannot use. Up until then, the newest iteration of Audulus worked just fine, offered a ton of flexibility and possibilities for creating patches and has a refreshed and beautiful UI. It’s just a shame that it’s been dead on iOS devices since the IOS 18 update. Hopefully they can get it fixed soon and offer some sort of extended subscription to compensate those of us who are in developer update limbo. Will amend my review/rating once this is fixed and some sort of compensation is offered for the time spent waiting for a developer fix. **Developer response:** Hey! Sorry about that! Thanks! ### 1/5 — Did you know this is now subscription based? *2024-10-17* Neither did I, after watching many YouTube videos, scouring the web site and forums for info on what was included. I was quite surprised to find it’s now subscription based, and many of the features I assumed I’d be getting as part of the not insignificant purchase price are not there Extremely disappointing, uninstalled and lost a fifth of a hundred ### 1/5 — Simply does not explain how it’s supposed to work *2024-09-03, version 4.5.1* Avoid. Mi rack does everything that this does better, number one mi rack works. This doesn’t. Do not even consider Audulus. It’s a waste. Has had months to pick up and improve. Hasn’t happened. It makes no sense. Envelopes don’t seem to work at all. There is no obvious logic to how to get things started. Why is this app still around? It’s as unusable as ever. ### 1/5 — Keeps freezing *2023-07-24, version 4.1.5* On iPad Pro. Latest OS 16.5.1(c). As soon as I add a node or module, it freezes. Can’t even zoom in or out. The cpu usage is at something low, like 9%, so that’s not the problem. I wish I could get my 40$ back as it is completely unusable. ### 1/5 — Latest bug fix release *2023-06-16, version 4.1.4* Downloaded the Jun 16 update to Audulus, this morning. After months of trouble-free booting and use, the app now no longer works on my 2018 iPad Pro running under the latest iPad OS. The app opens to a black screen. This is key app, for me, and I should like it returned to use, ASAP. If this is not possible, at least offer the previously functioning iteration. I do love this app, and hope this is a temporary blip. Thank you for your attention. ### 1/5 — Why no price on download? *2023-05-11, version 4.1.2* Who cares if the download doesn’t cost anything if you can’t use the app without in-app purchases? “Patch Editing” is the in-app purchase, making it seem like it can be demoed without editing patches. I am making a rare exception for Audulus 4. The amount of work and love Taylor has sowed in is extraordinary. So intuitive and easy to use, seriously thank you Taylor. Being left handed I find the interface to be acceptable except when switching from Performance Mode to Edit and back. A dedicated button in the top right interface panel instead of the slide out would be quite helpful. Try navigating with your left hand and you’ll notice your hand blocks the view. Thanks again, I have purchased each iteration, 1,2,3 and now 4. ❤️ ### 5/5 — Amazing app to learn about Modular synthesis *2025-06-14, version 4.6.3* Well.. I’m nowhere near getting my head round this but I can see what an incredible app it is ! The gui is superb and I have managed to make something that resembles the start of a musical track . It’s fun and has huge potential. Add to that the multitude of other apps and effects I have to play with in AUM, along with other musical instruments I can play in via my Irig and I don’t think it will be too long before I have a good track . ### 5/5 — Great App for those who really want to learn synthesis at a deeper level . *2025-01-30, version 4.6.1* When I at music school learning electronic music production , this app taught me a lot.
