## What is Augmented Theatre?

Augmented Theatre turns the phone in your pocket into part of the stage design.

During the performance the production cues every phone in the house at once, over the venue's own Wi-Fi:

• Surtitles — a line appears in your hand at the moment it is spoken, in any language, as large or as quiet as the scene needs.
• Film and stills — video and photographs play on every phone together, started by a single cue and running in step across the room.
• Light — a hundred screens fill with one colour, or a hundred torches come up together.
• Touch — a pulse timed to a heartbeat, a knock, a tremor.
• The theatre through the camera — the room seen through rain running down the glass, through heat rising off the stage, through scratched film, or turned around so the audience is looking at itself.
• Scenery — hold a printed image, point the phone at it, and the set rises off the paper in three dimensions with video playing on its surfaces.
• Sound with a place in the room — with headphones, a voice can be set down beside you and moved around you mid-sentence.

Everything the evening needs arrives quietly while the audience finds its seats, over the venue's own network — no internet, no waiting, and nothing on screen until the show wants it.

The app carries no advertising and asks for no account, and it does nothing at all until a production cues it: a phone that walks out of the building goes back to being a phone.

For producers: shows are driven from Augmented Theatre Dashboard for Mac and iPad, which delivers the media and sends the cues. augmented-theatre.web.app

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 4.24 — 2026-09-04

Keeping step with the Dashboard
The console in the booth gains a fuller manual in this release, and the app in the house follows it to 4.24 so a company can tell at a glance that what they are running belongs together.

Nothing changes in the app itself. This is the same app 4.23 was, under a number that matches the booth.

### 4.23 — 2026-09-03

One number across the whole set
The app in the house and the Dashboard in the booth now both read 4.23, so a company can tell at a glance that what they are running belongs together -- no more matching a 4.x app against a 1.x booth and hoping.

Nothing else changes here. This is the same app the last release was, under a number that matches the booth.

### 4.21 — 2026-09-01

Audio-reactive shaders
A new kind of look the control booth can send: a visual that reacts to the room's own sound, picked up live by your phone's microphone -- no two performances light it up quite the same way. The microphone is only ever used while one of these looks is on screen.

### 4.20 — 2026-08-24

The app's own name was showing as "AugmentedTheatre" — one word, no space — on the home screen, in the app switcher and in Settings. It reads "Augmented Theatre" now, everywhere iOS shows it.

### 4.19 — 2026-08-20

A title sent from the Dashboard now appears across the top of the screen, over whatever the scene is showing, clear of the phone's own status bar — and it goes when the show does.

Housekeeping under the hood: the last of the old cloud-delivery listeners are gone. Media reaches the phone from the production's own Dashboard, on the venue's network.
