Not only is it outdated, but it’s considered extremely racist in Australia, and is not used as anything but a slur. ### 5/5 — Amazing *2023-04-29* I use this constantly, I am going deaf in one ear and teaching my son. It’s easy to use, easy to understand and I love the review study function I’m learning a lot. I would like a little explanation of how to do the sign because sometimes it’s confusing when I’m watching. But it’s so amazing and user friendly! ### 4/5 — Love this app.. however *2023-03-30* Hi! I love this app. It has made learning and etc. super simple. However, I’ve noticed a lot of the finger spelling for the alphabet is the American one. It has the Australia one there too but makes it confusing as we don’t use this here in Australia. We only use the two handed alphabet which can be shown in the signbank website. Especially gif if you want to look up a few signs in a rush. I would like to be able nominate my state or region to avoid some confusion while using the flash cards. Also wish we could look up common phrases. Keep up the great work. ### 4/5 — Excellent Reference and Learning App *2023-01-19* An excellent AUSLAN dictionary. Be aware it requires internet to download the videos of signs, but they local cache (save) them for a fortnight. There is no option to permanently save any or all videos (but I'd love to see it!) The app is very intuitive to use, has a professional lightweight flashcard system, and list making ability. There is no way to browse words by topic as the app is just using the Signbank website for reference which is also unsorted by type. Overall, an amazing free app, well done to the developer. Definitely worth your time if you're learning or using AUSLAN, much better more convenient and functionality than the Signbank website itself. However I didn’t expect to come back to this app every evening trying to learn more words for fun. This app is not only an amazing tool to help me better communicate with deaf and hearing impaired people. It’s also a great way to spend 10-20 minutes each night. ### 5/5 — Excellent resource for learning *2022-04-24* This is a brilliant app. I’m using it to teach my 3 year old girls as another way of communicating. It is very easy to search, has a very big library and clear to follow videos. The auto looping videos are helpful as well. Thank you for your time and effort in making this available for everyone. ### 4/5 — 👍 *2022-04-05* Really like the work you’ve put into this app. I’ll need to spend some more time with it, but what I could see improving over time are: • Navigation from a dictionary entry to the revision section • On the search results screen it’s not intuitive to go to other sections • Ability to add dictionary entry to a specific list — at the moment it seems I can only add to the Favourites list by staring it • global setting for playback speed (even in flashcards) — it seems that the playback speed is always set back to 1x for every new • highlight the current playback speed setting • On the flashcards show buttons for actions such as “I know the answer”, “I don’t know the answer” and appropriate responses thereafter. • Show stats for revisions with date and success. • Where multiple cards exist for one word (eg. “hot”), only add an entry to a list on the card that I’m on. • Show Safari icon (or icon for default web browser, if possible) instead of the globe icon for clarity on what this means. **Developer response:** Hi Invenio, thanks for the feedback. These are all great ideas, I'll put them on the backlog. For the revision feature, I only show "remembered" / "forgot" buttons for spaced repetition, because it is only meaningful for that strategy since it feeds into which cards to show you in the future. The random strategy shows just the "next" button because each revision session just randomly shows you all the cards. Thanks for the feedback! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — need an option for different states and territories *2021-02-03, version 1.4.4* Some signs are wrong hence the reason it needs to have different states ### 2/5 — Auslan *2024-10-29, version 1.16.6* Need to up date more words not a lot is in the sign that am looking for . ### 2/5 — The dialects are wrong *2023-10-15, version 1.12.14* Very confusing, I can’t use this as the signs confuse my deaf friend who is southern auslan but the signs in the app are a different dialect. Too many are completely different to what I have been learning and what she signs with. Please consider a dialect setting and getting more dialect examples. ### 3/5 — Great start *2026-04-07* A great start to an app, if possible some improvements would be so good. Such as being able to add lists easily or when searching a particular word, t have a plus sign at the top to be able to add it to a list which can be reviewed later. At the moment it is very clunky to make a list and the community lists provided aren't able to be added to my own list or able to be reviewed. Most of the videos are very dated and there are dual entries for words rather than one entry with two videos to illustrate two ways of saying that word. I think a dictionary option would be good so you can scroll through all of the words that have signs attached to them and click on the ones you might want to learn or add to a list, rather than having to use the search function to find a word and possibly see others you might want to learn while you're there. I hope this feedback helps and if implemented, will change my review to 5! **Developer response:** Hey hey, I'm about to overhaul the app to improve the experience for adding items to lists. If you could email me with more details about this dictionary option you're talking about that'd be great! daniel@dport.me ### 3/5 — One thing to add *2024-08-30* Something that I have found as a support worker has been that it’s hard when your client doesn’t know what the word is associated with the sign. It would be awesome if there was a feature that could see the sign and then give you the word. I’m not sure if it’s possible but it would be good to help those still learning sign language or those supporting someone who is deaf. **Developer response:** Hey, thanks for the feedback. This would be quite complex, I've seen some researchers working on this but it's out of scope for what I could accomplish working on this in my spare time. I'll keep an eye on the research and see if it's feasible at some point in the future. ### 3/5 — A problem not fixed *2024-04-17* I had not used this app for a while so when I opened it to use it- I got this note covering the screen - it told me to update- which I tried- still got the note- I even deleted the app. and put it back on. It is also helpful , in the case of an emergency . For example: hello how are you? What is your babe? I am sorry but I only know a little Auslan What is the emergency ? Intact or send the review to the developer ### 4/5 — good for support!! *2026-05-14* i am a new learner to auslan and this is acts as a refresher for the words/terms ive learnt in class. most of it works pretty well and i appreciate that i can add my own lists and revise them as they categorise words in class. the only issue i have is that i cant seem to figure out if theres a way to select a certain dialect? from my understanding depending on where you are in aus some signs can be different but im based in nsw so i want to be able to see that specific sign before any of the others. some words have multiple ways to sign and so sometimes i get confused in which one im supposed to be using. i think if there was a feature where u could select which dialect you prefer then the videos in the dictionary would filter to those. it makes it more user friendly and less daunting for new learners out there!! **Developer response:** This is great feedback, I'll add support for filtering your search down based on region. Thanks! ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — this app is amazing. *2026-08-06* i am a uni student and do not currently have time or money to go to tafe to study auslan (yet!). i go to sign language meet ups where i can practice, and when people ask me how i learnt auslan if not tafe, they are so surprised and shocked to hear that i taught myself with this dictionary alone. it is so useful, and even though im not perfect, im so happy this app enables me to be able to make hard of hearing and deaf folks feel seen and help me to be able to communicate with them. this new update (august 2026) is so amazing and it was everything i longed to change about this app, thank you so much for all the time you have put into making this. im endlessly grateful and i cant wait to learn more. thank you so much for all the work you do and your app is amazing. ### 5/5 — Good app *2026-07-12, version 2.0.12* Update good good very good good ### 5/5 — Best Auslan app ever *2026-02-18* Your Apple app is the best so easy to use and to navigate. Glad it was an easy fix! I’m slowly learning some Auslan and it has so many signs than other apps.
