### 3/5 — Good App Overall

*2026-05-25, version 12.0.3*

I wished the app supported dark mode and used Liquid Glass. Also wished that the pictures were higher quality.

### 2/5 — Onerous privacy conditions

*2025-10-26, version 12.0.3*

Didn’t get the chance to use the app as it required me to give up my private details which could be passed on to any supporting company, with no clear path to rescind this approval. A lot too much to ask of volunteers who were happy to help out with the count.

### 3/5 — Identifier search algorithm

*2025-09-10, version 11.2.0*

The search function based on characteristics really has never worked since this app was released. The Birds In Backyards Finder works so well, why can’t the algorithm for that be adapted and used for this app?

### 4/5 — Great

*2024-10-08, version 11.2.0*

I love doing the bird count each year. The bird identification part is good when used in conjunction with google, local bird charts and books about local birds - and it is always good practice to verify with more than one resource anyway!

### 2/5 — Can’t find my location

*2021-10-21, version 8.0.5*

This was a great app. However in the 2021 update the map is not working and can’t find my location. So all my bird sighting have not been uploaded. Very disappointing as I am keen to submit data.

### 4/5 — Great app

*2021-10-18, version 8.0.3*

Would be useful if you could submit notes on your checklist. For example this afternoon there has been storms and rain so not many birds about.

### 2/5 — Too hard

*2020-10-12, version 7.0.4*

It’s a pity Its all too hard to use , as have so many birds in the Bouddi national park where I live , good luck with the count .

### 4/5 — Great stuff

*2020-01-23, version 6.0.2*

Love this app, it would be great if we could save sightings through the year!

### 4/5 — Big fix needed

*2019-10-24, version 6.0.2*

Guys. We need a bug fix. The app does not remember my details which means I can’t see my stats added to the pain of having to enter my details every time I want to do a count. Sigh...

### 4/5 — Photo

*2019-10-20, version 6.0.2*

I would like to be able to ad a photo, is it possible ? What if we can’t identify the species of bird ?

### 3/5 — Don’t like being pinned in map

*2019-10-19, version 6.0.2*

Whilst I’m supportive of this and participated willingly I was mildly alarmed to finds my sightings easily discoverable on a map at my home address. I gave my home address to help research not have it displayed on a public map. I know it doesn’t give my details but does this have to be so specific for the public? Surely a street name would suffice for the public map and a pin showing this not a street number. Not happy about that.

### 4/5 — Great fun

*2018-10-29, version 5.0.8*

The bird call function suggested by others is great, also can we have a way of enlarging the bird photos? Hard to identify when the photo is so small

### 3/5 — Good idea but...

*2018-10-03, version 5.0.6*

The app isn’t very intuitive. The dates for the watch are October 22nd-28th but it lets you submit now? It should be locked or information to say to wait for the watch period. Broken app, needs more work.

### 4/5 — Great App

*2017-11-02, version 4.1.0*

A bit more tweaking for next year as suggested by others. Bird call Id, keeping list for next day, being able to review & correct later when find have misidentified a bird especially if your a novice. Otherwise was a great improvement, gets better each year. Love doing it & helps our birds.

### 3/5 — Could be much more user friendly

*2017-10-30, version 4.1.0*

The app is good but an important and simple improvement would be if it kept your list of birds for each day and had them starting at 0. Then you would only need to + the number as you saw them and add any new ones. Adding every species (over 20 for me) every day by searching was a pain in the ....

### 4/5 — Needs bird Call adding

*2017-09-12, version 3.4.3*

When a bird is high up a tree the call is sometimes the difference between identifying or not. Otherwise all looks good.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Bit hard to use

*2024-10-15, version 11.2.0*

A bit bad but still good to try new things which is an okay thing

### 1/5 — What’s have you changed?

*2021-07-31, version 7.0.4*

Not used this app for a long time. Tried for an hour to fill garden details but dialogue box kept asking for a detail I can’t work out. Bad luck I’m not wasting time with my observations.

### 1/5 — Such a disappointing app

*2020-10-22, version 7.0.4*

I lined everyone up, the map didn’t work, no way to return to your account. Bad experience will not be doing a count each day as planned

### 1/5 — Fred at Breakfast Point

*2020-05-28, version 6.0.2*

Warning: The bird identifier is next to useless. It can lead to extreme frustration.

Even if you know what bird you a looking at working what selection of size shape and colours will produce a short list which includes the bird you are looking. I have more success asking questions on google. How is the colour a selection meant to work? It had never been any help to me. Surely being able to use the local habit would help. If I have seen a wading bird by the river with some black markings it’s unlikely to be a parrot. Right now I am staring at a cormorant type diving bird. It’s shape is not included in the selection. I cannot find any input that will output any of such birds I see on the river.

Another beef: why give the sometimes long list of possibilities alphabetically, surely by likelihood or some other criteria would be better. Good to that now the totally improbable possibilities are flagged.

### 1/5 — Bugs

*2019-10-30, version 6.0.2*

I love the idea of a bird count and thoroughly enjoyed being a part of it. My big problem was the app on my iPad started doing crazy things after the 3rd day eg the counting on 2 species went crazy and added 2,000 birds to each count and there was no way to change it. Then parts of the screen froze as a photo of a willie wagtail and I could get rid of it or read what was under it. The location map said I found 8 species where in fact it was 21. Next time I will send a separate email count in and not use the app unless the bugs can be fixed.

### 1/5 — Unfortunately unusual

*2018-10-25, version 5.0.8*

On first use in the field the app couldn’t display the location map despite location services being on and other mapping apps working fine - then crashed twice during 20min survey losing all data each time.

Couldn’t retrospectively add count as even after reinstalling location map didn’t work and therefore tried to record current coordinates rather than survey site coordinates.

### 1/5 — Disappointing

*2018-10-22, version 5.0.8*

Great idea, but 20 mins to enter! Exit the app to check a bird and lose the lot you had previously entered, arghh! Pictures missing from a lot of species. Once you have identified a group of possibilities very hard to refine with insufficient supporting information. I gave up after being an enthusiastic starter.

### 1/5 — Crashes on iOS6

*2015-10-21, version 2.1*

V 2.0 was fine, this one crashes on opening

### 1/5 — Useless

*2015-10-16, version 2.0*

Downloads but will NOT open. Unuseable

### 1/5 — won’t download

*2015-10-13, version 2.0*

have tried to download from APPLE but it never works.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Enjoyable doing the bird survey, learnt a lot from the app

*2024-10-23, version 11.2.0*

The app allows you to participate in the bird survey each year, and has a useful species guide.

I enjoyed doing the bird survey – has lots of good info on each species. I love that it indicates the unlikely species for your location. It seems a lot of work has gone into this.

The built-in species guide:
I like the hints on distinguishing similar species!

I would suggest that birds in the list be tagged (either by Birdlife Aust, or by app users) with tags for categories (e.g. So that typing "falcon" would also bring up Nankeen Kestrel), and it should also include older and disused names (e.g. "black-backed magpie"; "eastern swamphen") for species.
More photos of each species would be good, especially for species whichare easily confused.

### 5/5 — Too easy

*2023-10-16, version 10.0.3*

Simple to set up and simple to use for a worthy cause.

### 5/5 — Invaluable!

*2023-06-17, version 9.0.4*

Constantly useful for identifying birds.

### 5/5 — Great Guide

*2019-11-19, version 6.0.2*

I’m not great with birds but this app helps me figure out what’s lurking in my yard or down the bush. Keep up the awesome work!

### 5/5 — Amazing works great

*2019-07-13, version 5.0.8*

Look, this is an amazing app and I only have an Aussie reptiles, and an Aussie mammals field guide so I was looking if there was any decent bird guides on the AppStore so I didn’t have to pay much or any money at all for an actual field guide. Surely enough there was, this. So far I haven’t done the ‘game’ but the field guide works great and that’s the main or, really only reason I have it.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2018-11-24, version 5.0.8*

I agree with previous user. Bird calls and revision function would be great as I made a few identification errors as a novice. It would be good to be able to continue using the counting function afterwards.

### 5/5 — Easy to use

*2017-10-27, version 4.1.0*

This is a great concept! Easy to use app. Thanks for collecting data about our birds!

### 5/5 — Great

*2016-11-13, version 3.4.3*

It would be better if there was a search bar and you could search for the species of bird by just typing the name of it, and if there was a mode in which the layout is like a field guide. If there was audios of bird calls that would be very helpful.

### 5/5 — Great game

*2014-10-21, version 1.0*

Great game but should add more birds because i found a really rare bird and they didn't have it on the app but still a good game i have 200 birds so far

### 5/5 — It's a great app!

*2014-10-21, version 1.0*

It's a great app! I love going around looking for birds around my own backyard! But I think it would be good if you had to take a photo of the bird you saw, because people can just say they saw a really rare bird like a night parrot, in the middle of the city! And also it's a little strange you can put your location anywhere out of Australia. Apart from that it's a fantastic app :)
