The sprint version simulates reading the “paper” without ink stained hands. Most importantly I can get the news from anywhere and search back issues as well. A small technical adjustment to the app is requested. When enlarging a column to read on my iPad or iPhone the window jumps to align with “border” of the page forcing continued centeringreadjustments to maintain the expanded column text for reading. This is the reason for four stars rating. Thanks ### 4/5 — Great on ipad pro *2022-02-03, version 5.35.12* I really appreciate the new version of the ePaper. I enjoy the layout looking like the real paper, then the zoom in on a particular article feature. I would like to make one suggestion for improvement. When I select an article to read on the side while the page is still visible on the left or top, then read to the end of the article, I have to scroll all the way to the top for the X to close the article window. It would be really great if the X to close the window was at the bottom, or ideally at both the top and bottom. I realize this is just a little thing but figured you would be interested in the feedback. I would be happy to talk to someone about it if I haven’t described it adequately. I use an iPad Pro. The pages snap into focus much better than they used to, almost imperceptibly. There’s nothing that quite replaces the pleasure of seeing rhe layout of the “paper”. I finds the app easy to use and you can still easily forward articles to friends. I also like how you can access old editions in case there is something you want to go back to. I appreciate the interface still looking like a folded newspaper with the ability to zoom in/select the story I want to read. All the information of an old school newspaper with the newsprint on your fingers. Now how to figure out completing/printing the crossword…. ### 3/5 — Issues with app *2021-06-23, version 5.33.13* (1) app will restart in middle of reading paper for no apparent reason (2) as I read further into the pages, the side bar appears and the sections of the paper get more narrow. Restarting the app clears this but it returns again as I continue on reading (3) if you tap on an article to expand it into its own window, you must return all the way to the top of the article window to close it ### 5/5 — I love this App *2021-06-20, version 5.33.13* I love this App because it provides me with an exact copy of the Austin American Statesman print version. I can read through it as if holding the physical paper in my hands. This is a smart approach by the AAS because I also see the advertising. Believe it or not, ads can be “news”, too, as some are very relevant to me. ### 4/5 — Big Improvement *2021-04-25, version 5.32.51* Your new app is a big improvement over the previous one—pages fit the screen and are readable, moving page to page is much easier. One possible improvement: when scrolling vertically, the app is very sensitive to having your finger movement be perfectly vertical. If it is not, it may snap to the next page. ### 5/5 — Austin American Statesman is the best! *2021-04-13, version 5.32.51* I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with family in Austin. I want to be informed of the goings on in Austin and have been a subscriber for five years. The coverage of local news in Austin and its surrounding cities is in depth. The national news is outstanding can’t be beat. I find that the SF Chronicle is lackluster in its national and local news coverage. It can’t hold a candle to the Austin American Statesman! ### 5/5 — Statesman E-Edition *2021-03-10, version 5.32.51* The split screen makes it very easy to navigate with whole articles available without having to bounce around. The selected article appears in the right half of the page in a readable size font. The index is very accessible to assist in navigation. The option to increase the font size on both sides of the page is another improvement. Thanks, Karl Brown ### 3/5 — Experiences with Austin American Statesman *2021-02-21, version 5.32.51* I have given the the paper sited in this title a less than perfect rating. The writers and columnists for this paper are excellent - I have nothing but praise for the quality of their news coverage. I look forward each day to the news coverage, the opinion page and the work of columnists like Ken Herman, Addie Broyles, and Matt Oldham just to name a few! However! The department that deals with subscription services and problems is a whole ‘nother’ deal!!! For some reason, I have never been told why, my electronic paper was not delivered. My husband’s continued to arrive like clockwork. I pursued the problem for SIX WEEKS and followed EVERY thread of resolution of this situation offered. It literally required SIX weeks of DAILY work to resolve this problem. Apparently the corporation that owns this paper cares little about keeping the newspaper business alive and well. I continue to read and hear that newspapers are a thing of the past and if the customer service I experienced is any example we are just waiting for the funeral. Excellent newspapers also require at least minimally good customer service. ### 5/5 — Love online version *2021-02-18, version 5.32.51* At first I was hesitant to give up my paper copy of the Statesman but after trying the online version I was won over. It provides a view with such clarity and color that I’ve come to enjoy it even more and the fact that it loads quickly is a bonus. ### 3/5 — ‘When it’s good, it’s very, very good but when it’s bad it’s horrid..’ *2021-01-09, version 5.32.51* oVery convenient and speedy way to open my digital paper on most days. But several times including today after reading a few articles I will move to a new article and within half a moment the paper closes down. I repeatedly reopen and again it happens. So I move to NYT. Returning after that the app still does the same thing. Once by closing my iPad and reopening it worked. Hoping for the same today! Solar Bliss ### 5/5 — Austin American Statesman *2021-01-06, version 5.32.51* I have enjoyed receiving my paper online for several years now. I started with the idea that it would be nice to read on vacations, but when I realized that I was not even opening my paper copy I changed to e-paper only. Ap is easy to navigate and I like having it available when I have my morning coffee. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Horrible online paper *2022-10-24, version 5.36.13* The AAS’s news is no longer timely. And they send me emails almost everyday that requires me to log on to read their daily updates. This happens, despite being a subscriber since 1981. And particularly frustrating, is these email always have a subscription solicitation for a rate that is much better that the rate for longtime subscribers. Also, there is no coverage in the Sunday paper after Saturday UT football games. However, their columnist/reporters post their stories on Facebook the same day or on Sunday. If you have a problem, their customer service hours are limited. Unfortunately, I will soon be a nonsubscriber to the AAS. ### 1/5 — like a skeuomorphic fever dream *2022-07-08, version 5.36.13* this app is absolutely terrible. the daily edition doesn’t update properly (i’m still stuck looking at the june 24 morning edition, which is still blissfully unaware of the Dobbs decision that was released that day), it often freezes up, and ignores basic usability guidelines by organizing itself like a paper version, splitting articles between “front page” and “continued” articles. it’s like nobody ever stopped to consider any newspapers did that in the first place. to make things worse, the html version does the same thing, has styling that flat out doesn’t work on mobile screens smaller than an ipad, and just plain doesn’t work well. on the plus side, if you have parents with alzheimer’s who are trapped in 1995, they will probably like it. ### 1/5 — Terrible News Reader *2020-08-03, version 5.31.78* Living in Austin, a city known for creating great apps and software, it’s embarrassing that our local paper has so completely failed in this app. I regret even purchasing a subscription after a few painful weeks of using this app. They seem to be stuck in this world of thinking that trying to mimic an actual paper newspaper experience is something desirable. It isn’t. Even when you use the HTML5 version it’s just awful. Formatting issues, taxonomy issues, constantly having to zoom and pan your screen from one article to the next. It’s terrible. When comparing to things like Apple News this thing feels like it was designed in the 1990s. I so wanted a decent source of local news and I am completely disappointed in the Austin American Statesman’s failed execution and delivery of that. This app can’t be saved. They should re-factor the entire thing. Hopefully with new tech and UX leadership before they embark on that. ### 1/5 — Leave it to the AAS to go from adequate to awful. *2020-04-08, version 5.31.70* Just when things were moving along in an acceptable fashion, suddenly we find “fit page” has disappeared, and enlarging the page manually (you know, in order to be able to actually read it) has the result of the navigation tools disappearing. Frustrating and annoying. I’d add unbelievable, as well, but I’ve been a subscriber for too long to imagine that any incompetency is beyond the realm of possibility. It’s almost like they don’t WANT us to read this paper. ### 1/5 — New statesman e-edition app *2020-04-02, version 5.31.70* This app is horrible. It is much worse than the previous one. It skips from page to page, constantly moving. The previous app showed one page at a time. The new one shows two pages and it is frustrating trying to get a readable page up. Give us the old app back. I tried to call and talk to someone about this. I was referred to one person after another, forced to wait on hold for 20 minutes or longer, hung up on, and finally given another number which was never answered. This is absurd. Very unfriendly. And no one seems to care. ### 1/5 — Zero stars *2020-02-25, version 5.31.64* Ugh. The flashing ad at the bottom is fiercely annoying. We pay enough for this paper to enjoy an ad-free app. The ad and extra navigation tools take up screen space in the new app and the iPad browser edition. I will most likely cancel the subscription since the reading experience is so unpleasant. The Statesman just can’t seem to get the browser or app versions correct. I have subscribed in print and online for years and continue to be disappointed. Statesman: Take your cue from Washington Post and NYT apps. The new version as of Feb. 2020 is another epic fail. The Statesman just can’t seem to get it right. The page forward arrow is too close to the search button. The pages constantly refresh. Double pages are too small to read. Choosing the fit to screen option to read one page at a time won’t set permanently. You have to choose it every day. At least the extra ad overlay is not as conspicuous. And don’t get me started on the browser version. Completely unusable. Ugh. ### 2/5 — Not so good *2020-08-01, version 5.31.78* I use an iPad. This new ePaper version is inconsistent. Today, the text is partially blurred in the midst of some articles, fine in other parts. Regardless if I zoom in or out, it remains blurry. Prior to this, the paper wouldn’t load properly, and threw me into a demo page where it asked me to login every time. I had to delete the app and then reinstalled it a couple of times. Finally, it worked. I preferred the version before this new one. At least it was consistent and I was just able to read the paper reliably. Really irritating. ### 3/5 — Better Statesman App Than Others... *2023-01-08, version 5.36.13* This app is a lot better than those I have experienced. There needs to be improvements though: ability to share articles; take the fuzziness out of switching from one article to another and overall user friendliness. I will continue to explore this app and see what else needs to be improved. ### 3/5 — My rating *2022-12-20, version 5.36.13* For the most part, I like reading the paper online. I like being able to read a newspaper even while traveling. The quality is not so good. Many times the online paper is not in focus and the print is too fuzzy to read. I mentioned this to customer service and was told that several people have the same problem and it will be brought to the editors attention. So far the results remain the same. ### 3/5 — Less than Five *2021-10-02, version 5.33.14* Once one gets to experiment with the app and get to know its eccentricities, it’s a great app, worth at least a 4.5 star rating. If it were a car, it would’ve taken me two days to find the hood lever to get under the hood. So poor instructions and not user-friendly entry brings it down to a 3 star. This being said, I hope that the Statesman would go on forever. I’ve been a fan since AustIn had four-foot high sidewalks on Congress Ave. Al Rodriguez ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Simple, works well, and purpose built *2023-05-23* I was pleasantly surprised by this app. I bought a subscription to the paper on sale and didn't expect to keep it long. The app, along with the content of the paper made me stay. E-readers are often, for lack of a better term, hot garbage. This one takes a second to get used to the layout and navigation but once you learn it, navigating the app is seamless. It's easy to move from one edition to another, including going back to older editions. Also the ability to tap on a column to make fullscreen and easily scroll through the whole story (including the continuation from another page) is really nice. Overall it's a rock solid app, keep it up. P.S. Austin-American Stateman's reporting is great, very fair and their fact checking column is great. Local to national I feel it's an easy and thorough way to catch up on the news. ### 5/5 — Easy to read and skim *2023-05-20* Times to download and print have improved dramatically in the last few months. Ability to go section by section or page by page is convenient. Articles can be easily expanded to read. One minor nit - sometimes the pictures in the article don’t get included. You can expand an article by hand and they will be available but using the select process to read it often does not include the photos. ### 5/5 — Rating on app *2023-04-30* I have been using this app for the past week and it’s easier to use and does not take very much time to open the program. I had to go out of town this past week and I used it to read my daily newspaper. I didn’t have any trouble going from page to page. However, I see if you leave it open for a few minutes then the program goes back to the beginning and does not stay at the point I was reading. I believe it will take time to get used to the app. ### 5/5 — Feel of a paper on a tablet *2022-12-06, version 5.36.13* Home delivery is not an option, and I feel that the website version results in my missing stories. This is a easily used application. Given screen aspect ratio, it works better on something like an iPad, than a device with a 16:9 aspect ratio. I can easily scan every section to find items of interest in sections i infrequently read, just glancing at the leads of each story. I find the controls to zoom in and out using finger taps and the other controls to be a little sensitive but I quickly assimilated motor memory so I rarely mess up. The final things that I like is that this paper does decent in depth local articles and the app brings in other papers in the local area, and sections from the USA today’s network. I would estimate that I use this app 4-5 times a week. ### 5/5 — A good UI/UX makes it nice to read *2022-11-03, version 5.36.13* I wanted to support the Austin American statesman because I think they're a decent independent voice of real news in Austin Texas. Their app works pretty well and I appreciate the UI/UX features that allow me to zoom in when I wanna zoom in on things. Being a computer scientist myself, I obviously have lots of ideas on how it can be improved… But people usually pay me for my advice. Lol ### 5/5 — Almost as good as paper. *2022-06-02, version 3.6.05* Very easy to use app. I bought a Samsung pad to make reading easier. My wife has a iPhone 8 and I have a n 8 plus. I love the flexibility of multiple reading formats and ease of use. It can only get better. I will miss the paper for starting grill fires but, that’s what the Sunday paper will be saved for, after reading it. ### 5/5 — Have adapted to online *2022-05-05, version 3.6.05* I am 74 and have read my newspapers daily all my adult life. Thought I would never get use to online reading. But after a few mental adjustments, I am enjoying reading online in places I would not whip out a full news paper. It’s intuitive design makes it a breeze to flip to any section or page. I’m reading my Austin Statesman on my iPhone mini. With its click to read an article feature, it’s easy to read an article in depth. Possibly my favorite feature of the app is that when I close a news article close up, I land on the newspaper page where I started (NOT LOST)!
