## What is Australian Taxation Office?

The ATO app allows you to manage your tax and super affairs on the go – making tax simple & easy.

For a personalised tax and super experience, you will need:
- a myGov account linked to the ATO
- to register your device by providing and verifying an Australian mobile number and an email address.

With the ATO app, you can: 
- follow your 2025-26 tax return from start to finish, including checking prefill information, tracking the progress of your return and its outcome
- view in real-time when lodgments and payments are due, and seamlessly action them via our online services
- set up quick login using your device’s security features like face and fingerprint recognition
- view messages in real-time when important changes are made to your ATO record and to verify certain actions before they are submitted
- lock your ATO record if you see fraudulent activity, to keep it safe
- verify if a call claiming to be from the ATO is genuinely from us
- view your tax accounts, with links to our online services to view transactions, create payment plans or pay
- see an overview of your super balance and accounts
- view your employment income and superannuation contributions required from your employers
- check your personal, business (sole traders only) and registered agent’s details
- access our most popular tools.

Our most popular tools include:
- myDeductions: record your work expenses as an employee or sole trader. Sole traders can also record income. At tax time you can easily upload your myDeductions records to your tax return or email a copy to your tax agent.
- Tax withheld calculator: calculate the amount of tax to withhold from salary and wage payments.
- ABN Lookup: search for an Australian business number (ABN).
- Business performance check: compare your business with similar businesses in your industry using the latest Small business benchmarks.

The ATO app can automatically send usage data to help improve the app. The data we collect doesn’t identify you and you can choose to turn this off at any time in your app’s settings.

GPS can be used to record trips in myDeductions. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

To record a trip in myDeductions using the GPS option, the app needs access to your device location.

The decision to only support phones with newer iOSs is disappointing and feels unfair to users who cannot afford to upgrade their devices regularly. 

Not everyone has the financial ability to purchase the latest phone, so restricting access based on device age can disproportionately exclude lower-income users. While updating technology is understandable, developers should consider supporting older devices for longer so affordability doesn’t become a barrier to accessing the app. 

Overall, the app risks contributing to the digital divide rather than providing an inclusive experience for all users.

**Developer response:** Hi, The ATO app requires iOS and iPadOS 16 or later and Android 13 or later to ensure full functionality as well as access to new security features. To register my new phone, the app needs to send a code to my old phone. Who keeps their old phone these days? So, I have to call the call centre, which was of course a new low-lever tedium.

This has to be the most garbage app I’ve ever used, sold my previous devise and now I can’t login. Try to call them and they are apparently always too busy. Horrible horrible system

Requiring access to an old install of the app you last used a year ago to get a notification on a phone you don’t have when you have already used a PassKey to sign in, and have other options for 2FA is a very bad design decision. Especially when the solution is “call us and spend 20min on the phone for the tech team to take 7-10 working days to action the ticket.” Just a terrible design all around. How did that get through a design authority??

For god sake can you test at least once what you have built? It’s a joke! When I tired login to it asked to register my device, and to register I need to provide a verification code which I cannot provide because I’m not logged in. This is a dead loop ! Paying tax is too hard in this country !

What a joke!
I feel sorry for anyone who has to work for these clowns. 
Every year same issues trying to sort tax time out. 
If you have changed your device since last year, god help you! Don’t waste your time trying to do it online and even calling them up they will tell you it takes up to 7 to 10 working days just to add a new device. So ridiculous it’s almost comedy!
Wise up ATO. Get it together. You rob billions from us every year and can’t even have a working app. USELSS!
