## What is AutoND?

AutoND is a utility for landscape photographers that helps them to choose the right filter density.

Graduated neutral density filters are an essential tool for every landscape photographer. They are used to reduce the dynamic range of the scene, so that the camera sensor is able to catch all the details.

However, determining the right filter for a situation is a tedious task. This is where AutoND comes into play.

AutoND is not a camera app. It uses the camera on your mobile device to automatically measure the dynamic range of the scene and give you a filter recommendation.
It can also be used as an old fashioned filter density calculator where you put in two shutter speed values by hand.

Want to know the optimal filter for your scene? The workflow is surprisingly simple:

- Start the app
- Point your mobile devices camera to the brightest part of the scene and press the button
- Then point it to the darkest part of the scene and press the button again
- Now you automatically get a filter recommendation!

## Key features

- Automatic dynamic range measurement
- Filter density calculation
- Manual shutter speed input
- Filter recommendation
- Supports graduated neutral density filters

### 3/5 — Neutral review

*2019-05-19*

I’ve tried using this app in all settings and environments and I always get the same result,,,,, NO FILTER NEEDED
I’m shooting outside in full sun and I know I need to use an ND filter but according to the app, I don’t.

**Developer response:** Hi,
thanks for your feedback. If you feel that you get filter recommendations too late you can go to the settings page and lower the value for the desired dynamic range. This will affect the manual and the automatic mode and give you filter recommendations more early. The best value depends on your workflow, so you might try to lower it step by step and see if the results fit your expectations.
To get the best results on your camera, always shoot in RAW mode, set the exposure to match the highlights in the sky and recover the shadows in post processing. By doing so you can often get away without using a filter (even in broad daylight) but the shadows may appear black on the cameras live view. This depends on the cameras sensor.

### 5/5 — Fanatastic ND calculator

*2019-03-26*

I came across this to help my wife who is new to photography. This is a fantastic app. Allows recommendation based on light conditions, calculates shutter speed using base line exposure then providing longer shutter speeds based on you ND filter density. This is a must have. And it’s FREE!!!

### 5/5 — Very useful app when using filters on your DSLR!

*2018-07-10*

Really surprised this app doesn’t have more ratings and reviews—especially since it’s *free* and doesn’t even have any ads (thank goodness... can’t stand ads and all the tracking that goes on when you use apps that have them!) The developer has put together a great collection of calculators and tools for dealing with exposures that can benefit from ND filters. Thanks for a great app, Stefan!
