Maybe the software is better on the PC side, but I’m having a devil of a time getting the software to work properly between the AMBIENTCAM2 solar camera, my base station, my laptop and my smart devices. For starters you have to know which software to use (NOT the Ambient VMS, but the AWN VMS), only it’s not included on the downloads page for the product on the Ambient website. Once you do find the software, and if you get it to recognize your device, then the fun starts with trying to configure the device and/or to remove/change parameters as you work thru problems on connectivity. I am a seasoned tech person, and if I’m having trouble with this setup I’m guessing others will, too. You have a good base to start from, Ambient … please do something about this awful software. It will be your undoing if you can’t make this more user friendly. For starters, hire someone who knows about UI consistency across platforms and devices, model out some use cases, and prove to yourself that your product is friendly to the common user. Today it is not. ### 3/5 — Difficult *2026-02-05, version 1.0.16* After trying about 1000 times, I finally connected to Wi-Fi. I disabled my 5 GHz network. Using an iPhone. I went to settings, tapped wifi, tapped the i on my 2.4 GHz, scrolled down, and turned off private wifi address. Then, I followed the set-up instructions on this app. Finally, success! ### 3/5 — 192.168.4.0/24 Network Issues *2025-12-30, version 1.0.16* It is true, this app is not very good. However, I did eventually get it to work. I ran into a particularly challenging issue and I thought I would describe my findings here. My home Wi-Fi network is broadcasting 192.168.4.0/23. The device’s Wi-Fi is also on 192.168.4.0. This causes a conflict so that, even after you correctly configure the device, it cannot then connect to your Wi-Fi. The solution was to set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a different address space. Hours of doing the same thing over and over to get no result. I’ve connected in the past but it was totally random that it connected. Many Failed Attempts *2024-10-17, version 1.0.16* This software must have been written by a sister or brother-in-law. Absolutely trash. No feed back just failure after failure. Shameful. I am an IT guy with 25 yr experience and I still wasted 45 min just trying to get it to join WiFi. I finally followed the advice of another one star review to turn off cellular when going through the setup and that seemed to work. They REALLY need to update this app to address all of problems that everyone is having. ### 2/5 — Works great when it works.. *2024-06-30, version 1.0.16* Recently got new internet service. I remember when I first got it I had issues connecting to my internet then as well. Now I’ve followed different options from ambient customer service and ensuring through my internet company I had indeed switched the dual band router to 2.4. Still will not connect.2902c is the model I’ve had. Was about to buy another one for a gift until this happened. I don’t think I will Now unless there’s some kind of solution to this problem. ### 1/5 — Worst app in the App Store *2024-02-29, version 1.0.16* Iv’e had nothing but trouble with this app. Every time I have to reset my router, I struggle to get the awnet app to work. This time, it won’t connect at all to my ambient weather station. I’ve went through trouble shooting, watched videos, and tried suggestions on Reddit with no luck. I won’t purchase another ambient product again. I will purposefully search out the competitor and buy it. ### 1/5 — Terrrible app, crashes, required undocumented steps *2024-02-03, version 1.0.16* 1. Why does this need to be a standalone app? It would be within the dashboard app. 2. There are multiple additional steps you must take to successfully connect to WiFi -disable or forget your 5ghz WIFI. You have to have them split to set up but can rejoin them after and it retains connection -turn off cellular data -turn off “auto join WiFi” The app says none of this nor does the Ambient website. It’s just a crappy app that leads people to frustration. The app also crashes indiscriminately. I had to change my WiFi network name and was able to get all my home devices reconnected in under ten minutes. Took me two days of frustration trying with this crappy app. ### 1/5 — Use a pc/Mac instead! *2023-11-01, version 1.0.16* Like others, this app didnt work for me. But search how to set things up via a pc and typing in the device is address, worked perfectly ### 3/5 — Got it to work no problem, here is how *2023-10-21* So this is what I had to do to get it to work. 1) Connect to YOUR wifi that is a 2.4 gHz band. My guest network is only this so that is what I use. 2) open the app 3) when it prompts you to, go to your wifi settings and connect to the Ambient weather’s WiFi. 4) BEFORE going back to the app, make sure whatever your normal WiFi routers are, go to each and toggle OFF “automatically connect” to each of these. 5) BEFORE going back to the app, make sure the WiFi symbol in the top right has gone from WiFi (from your old connection) to cellular (bars, this means no WiFi right now), to then WiFi connection once you’re connected to the weather system’s WiFi. 6) go to the app, fill out the info and connect. Had no issues this way and worked on my first try 5) go back to the ambient weather app. ### 1/5 — Horrible! Won’t reconnect to my new Ambient Weather Station *2023-09-17, version 1.0.16* Useless! I needed to connect my weather station to a new WiFi router. 8 tries with both an iPhone, IPad, AND a neighbors Android phone and no luck. PLEASE update this app so it works ASAP! And yes, I used a 2.4 ghz Wi-Fi signal. Sad to say the least. ### 1/5 — Doesn't work *2023-08-27, version 1.0.16* I've been trying to connect this app for months! Uninstall and reinstalled repeatedly. It just continues to say it connected but it doesn't and my wifi flashes until unplugged. Contacted Ambient and they sent me a useless link and then stopped responding to me. I won't buy from Ambient weather again. Not happy!!!!!!! ### 1/5 — Just might be the most frustrating app I have ever used *2023-08-08, version 1.0.16* The negative reviews don’t do this app Justice. It’s even worse than that. I tried every single workaround to try and get my weather station to connect to Wi-Fi. I finally gave up on the iPhone and had luck after 3 tries connecting via my iPad. Just for kicks, I also tried trying to connect it via my old Android phone and it also worked. Idk what it is with iPhones, but this app will not work with them. Don’t even bother trying. ### 1/5 — Useless app *2023-07-31, version 1.0.16* Cannot get weather station onto my WiFi because it continuously crashes during setup. Waste of time, app devs need to be fired. ### 1/5 — This App is HORRID *2023-07-29* If only negative stars were available. I have a new 2902D system with the new console. I have tried two different routers that connect other 2.4GHz device with no issues at all including Lifex bulbs, security cameras, etc. I have plenty of capacity in my system for additional connected devices. I have turned off all other nodes on my mesh network. I have turned off the cellular data and done REPETITIVELY all the steps on the support pages. I have been working for two weeks to try to get this console to connect. The app always reports that it is connected to Wi-Fi successfully but then the app crashes with no connectivity. At this point I keep hoping that some weather leprechaun will just show up and magically make it work like so many other random posts online indicate for this system. This appears to be a notoriously recognized failure of an app at this point. Bottom line: if you are reading reviews before making an informed purchase of a weather system, RUN!!! Or, at the very least wait until they develop on app that doesn’t crash or require throwing Pennies into a wishing well until something mysterious occurs causing random functionality! ### 1/5 — App doesn’t work as expected for REINSTALL *2023-07-24, version 1.0.16* But it did connect. My station HAD been online with Weather Underground, but I had to do a major network rework. Followed the instructions, but when the big circle starts, the app would crash. After the 4th time, I checked the WU app - my device was now registering. Luckily, I had an old Android device laying around (Pixel 3 with Android 12), so I downloaded the app on that, and it worked on the first try. ### 1/5 — GUI doesn’t work *2025-11-17, version 1.0.16* Got rude advice from AW staff on updating to a new router. I went a year without being able to connect. Finally ordered a new display unit because they said that must be the issue. NOPE. It was the GUI on the AWNET app. Finally was able to update on the web. Followed everything in manual. All troubleshooting suggestions. Have switched off 5.0 over a dozen times, nothing. The only option is to try back at a later date and see if the application has been updated, and the update resolves the issue. As there is no version number on the app, there’s no way to know specifically if this has happened. As of January 2, 2025 it is not working. WiFi was easy to setup and it connected with no problems…only thing I wish is I could replace my apple widget with one from ambian of my own weather station… ### 5/5 — Works as expected *2022-04-20* So first, to everyone who doesn’t understand what this app does… it updates the wifi firmware of your ambient weather station (supported stations only) this is not used to set up the station. The station console needs to already be on wifi for you to use this. It needs to be on the same wifi as your phone. This allows you to update the wifi module firmware, connect the data to various services (ambientweather.net, weather underground and weathercloud) and change the system units. That’s it. For initial setup…. Use the console. You can also connect it to ambient weather and weather underground on the console. Which is what I did. This app won’t update the general firmware. You need to do that with a micro SD card. It’s all in the manual. If this is all too confusing, an advanced weather station probably isn’t for you (but you could also contact support before complaining in the App Store) ### 5/5 — Works great actually *2022-02-15* Used in WS-2902C and connected first try. A couple of things though: 1) The manual to the weather station has typos and some steps are out of order. This makes connecting process challenging. 2) Read the section on connecting 2-3 times BEFORE you begin. 3) Register your Ambient (and optional Weather Underground) account first. Then begin connection process. 4) Once connected and you’re at the page to “Upload Interval (1 - 5 minutes)”, be sure to click the “on” button so it transmits data to the servers after you connect console to Ambient online account. ### 5/5 — Was Awful *2021-02-05* So when I first tried to use this app it was the same story as everyone else. I contacted ambient support and they said that their iOS developers broke the functionality in the .09 version and just today they released the .10 version. My weather station is gone in the app. Please fix this ASAP ### 5/5 — Worked for me *2019-12-27, version 1.0.6* I didn’t have any problems setting it up, so I can’t complain. If you have multiple WiFi bands make sure your device is hooked up on the lower band or it won’t work. ### 4/5 — Turn of Cellular data… *2024-04-11* Could not get my weather station to connect at all, I tried for 30 minutes with countless attempts. Found a note about turning of your cellular data. I did that and my weather station connected on my first attempt with this app. Again TURN OFF YOUR CELLAR DATA and it will work on your first attempt. ### 4/5 — Read the instructions! *2022-04-09* I was concerned after reading the reviews, but decided to ignore the instructions and not turn off the 5Ghz bands on my triband mesh network. Sure enough, repeated failures. Then I did as the instructions clearly stated and voila! connected on the first try (full disclosure- I forgot to turn off the other mesh modes but had the unit very close to the main node so maybe that negated my laziness on this point).
