I have a lot of time on my hands so I use Babbel on both my phone and desktop for up to two hours a day, and I’m really enjoying learning Spanish. The test I took to gauge my level, beginner but with some previous experience learned by ear while traveling, gauged me so accurately that my first lesson answered a question about the past tenses that I’d had. Anyone using a free version of an alternative app would do well to try Babbel’s 3 month package and see for themselves. ### 5/5 — Cool *2026-08-30, version 22.12.0* Cool ### 2/5 — Seemed promising… *2026-08-30, version 22.12.0* I was looking forward to learning Latin American Spanish, but too bad there is no 1 month subscription option… I am low income and do not have the money to commit to 3 months at a time. ### 2/5 — App has ruined French for me *2026-08-30, version 22.12.0* I wanna start off by saying that I think this app is much better than other language learning apps because it's not so gamified. However, I have realized that by using this app, I now see learning a second language as an obligation, and I see it as being a burden rather than something that I actually want to do. The constant notifications and the whole concept of a streak makes it feel like you have to do it, whereas I think that learning a language should be something you see as fun and enjoyable. The other thing I will say is that if you were learning French outside of France or Belgium, a lot of the vocabulary in here will not make sense native speakers in your country. I am from Quebec Canada, and there are certain words or expressions that I was taught in this app that would never be used here. Certainly seeing the words and phrases helps with that, but asking me to answer with written and correctly spelled responses is not. If I decide it's important to write in French at some point then I'll focus on it.
