## What is Backburn?

Backburn is a rigorous wildfire strategy simulation built around the forces that actually shape a fire: fuel, terrain, wind, moisture, and time.

Take command across 30 handcrafted scenarios. Study topography and fuel beds, forecast the weather windows, cut line where it will hold, stage engines ahead of the wind shift, and make the call between attacking the head and protecting the structures behind it.

THE INCIDENT TIMELINE
Every run ends with its story drawn: acres burned turn by turn, wind shifts and spot fires flagged as moments, structures lost, containment — and the turn it got away, marked on the chart. Losing teaches, because you can see exactly when you lost.

A REAL FIRE MODEL
- Hex-grid spread driven by fuel type, slope, wind speed and direction, and humidity
- Spotting across your line when the wind rises; burnout and fuel exhaustion
- Day-night cycle with humidity recovery; scripted fronts and gusts per scenario

REAL TACTICS
- Hand crews, engines, dozers, helicopters, and air tankers, each with honest capabilities and limits
- Control line built cell by cell; retardant that delays instead of stops
- Fatigue, water, and injuries — pushing a crew too hard has a price
- Evacuations when the fire reaches the line you failed to hold

A CAMPAIGN THAT TEACHES
- 30 scenarios from grass fires to campaign fires, each with par, stars, and a written after-action verdict
- A field guide covering the model: fuels, weather, spotting, and tactics

Backburn is fully offline. No account, no ads, no purchases — the whole game, bought once.

## Version history (last 2 releases)

### 2.0 — 2026-08-28

Backburn 2.0 — the fire tells its story.

THE INCIDENT TIMELINE — every scenario now ends with the whole run drawn: acres burned turn by turn, the wind shifts, the spot fires, the structures lost, the containment flag — and when it went wrong, the exact turn it got away, named on the chart.

Under the hood, the engine now records a full per-turn log of every incident, so the after-action report is built from what actually happened — nothing reconstructed, nothing summarised away.

Also in 2.0: the after-action report scrolls properly on smaller phones, and the interface has been decluttered so the map is always the whole screen.

### 1.0 — 2026-07-30

No release notes.
