### 3/5 — problems

*2022-12-13, version 3.9.6*

it’s my favorite reddit app but i have a few problems with it

➖search function: having to go all the way to the top to search & losing my place in the process is annoying. i wish the search bar was in the side menu and the app remembered where i was. ➖general bugginess: if you have text in the search bar and scroll down, you can still see the little "x" that clears the text in the bar as you scroll. opening a linked post while you're on a post shifts the whole view down so the top of the new post is cut off. pictures take forever to load➖videos: mute button is strange. i press to unmute and it doesn't actually unmute until i open the video? and vice versa. there are kind of a lot of problems with this app but it's my favorite reddit client on ios because of the simplicity. i just wish there weren't so many bugs

### 4/5 — Media player changed?

*2022-11-11, version 3.9.6*

The media player for I.reddit and gifs and the like used to have the pause and skip ahead/back 10 seconds on the bottom where the bar was but now they’re in the middle of the screen and when they come up the rest of the screen darkens. Could you change it back to how it was before?

### 3/5 — Latest update causing freezes and lags

*2022-10-16, version 3.9.6*

This has been my fav Reddit reader for years, but for the past couple weeks I’ve been experiencing serious lagging and freezing issues, even just when scrolling thru text. Im not sure if it’s due to the update, but the timing seems to line up. I’ll give it a couple weeks to see if it improves before I find a new reddit client (maybe it’s just an ad causing some issues or something). Right now it is an extremely uncomfortable user experience.

### 3/5 — PLEASE FIX THE VIDEO PLAYER + unable to block accounts now

*2022-07-13, version 3.9.5*

EDIT- I can’t block anyone anymore! Reddit is being overrun by bots so I’ve been blocking the ones I see. There doesn’t seems to be a limit to how many accounts you can block but it keeps telling me I can’t block anyone. REALLY FRUSTRATING! Restarting the app and logging out doesn’t help. I refuse to delete and redownload the app because I know it will remove my sub/feed filters and I don’t want to lose those.

The one big issue I have with this app is that videos will only play correctly until you go full screen. It sometimes pauses sometimes doesn’t, but the really annoying thing is that th video will stop at about a third in and then it skips back and forth rapidly. It doesn’t matter if you go out of the video and back, or restarting the app, it happens ALL THE TIME. As far as ads go, I don’t think I’ve had it bad like everyone else. I only get banner ads at the bottom. It would be nice if the ads were varied. Really sick of seeing the one Snapchat rip-off constantly. It should be mandatory for a confirmation to pop up when tapping on an ad. I’ve never clicked an ad deliberately, never will, and it’s infuriating that accidentally opening one does just that. Just give me a confirmation so it doesn’t open the stupid ad in my browser.

### 4/5 — App has improved a lot over time a little more user experience stuff could help though

*2021-10-21, version 3.9.1*

The first thing that bothers me is that I cannot scroll across other things I’m viewing like I can the front page or subreddits

For instance if I’m in r/news I can swipe away to see the next post

But for profiles, saved posts, upvoted posts, etc. you have to back in and out of each post to view it

### 3/5 — Ads

*2021-06-07, version 3.8.3*

You gotta do something about the ads. I’ve never had trouble before a few months ago but now anytime my finger is even slightly close to an ad, it opens up the internet then another page then the App Store. I’m not accidentally pressing it ever. I’m simply scrolling over it. It cut my bacon reader usage by like 80%. I’m not closing 2 apps and coming back to Bacon Reader every scroll and a half.

### 4/5 — New ads make the app unusable.

*2021-05-18, version 3.8.1*

Just today, there are new ads added that take over the whole screen every time I scroll to the next story and/or click on a post. It makes the app unusable. Guess I’ll have to find another way to surf Reddit. Thanks for the memories.
Ads have subsided. Thanks for getting back to me.

### 3/5 — Decent but buggy

*2021-04-29, version 3.8.1*

I’ve had the same four unread message notifications all day, even though I have cleared out my message folder multiple times. This happens often-the notifications icon is totally unreliable. Also, the search function is improved, but still misses quite a bit of the time.

### 2/5 — almost perfect but one flaw makes it awful

*2021-01-27, version 3.7.8*

I've been using this app forever - but I'm about to give up on it for something that ruins the experience numerous times . if you swipe left or right the screen changes to somewhere else and you lose wherever you were and whatever you were writing if you were writing.

being left handed and trying to scroll ask reddit. this becomes a frustrating nightmare.

all I want is the option to completely disable this swipe action, I don't want it at all anyway. after years of this I'm about ready to switch apps even though literally everything else about this app is as simple as I could ever hope for.

### 2/5 — Go to for a long time, but a new complaint

*2021-01-10, version 3.7.8*

I don’t know what’s changed with the app. It’s for years been my Reddit portal and I would still love to use it for years more.

However, in the past month, I’ve run into a pretty significant problem. I am sometimes maybe too verbose, but that’s my prerogative... when I go to proofread my comments or posts I’d like to make, the app does a weird somersault and ENTIRELY deletes the essay I had been trying to write.

Just like a casual flick in a direction I cannot explain, and the last 20-25 minutes of me curating my post or comment gets completely erased. Whatever point I had hoped to make is lost entirely. There’s no redo, there’s no drafts. Just GONE. I’ve wasted at least 3 hours over the last couple weeks trying to comment or post and lost everything I had been writing.

It’s annoying and disheartening. I wasn’t going to get that much feedback anyway. It was like a therapeutic journaling session, and all the energy and effort I put in was wasted and can’t be revisited.

Please reinstate a verification of deleting drafts. Why am I even trying to say anything if the app will just disrespect me like this?

### 3/5 — Was my favorite reddit app, until it started to significantly drain my battery

*2020-06-26, version 3.6.5*

I noticed a few days ago that my phone battery would go from 100 to 20% by noon with minimal use. I checked my battery usage in the settings and noticed that for this app, with 5 min on screen, there was 12 HOURS of background activity. What is it doing? Mining bitcoin or something? Yes my background app refresh is off, but I usually leave the app open and just switch apps, which has worked for me for the most part and no other apps have such significant background activity usage. I don’t want to explicitly close all my apps after I’m done using them just because of this issue. But if you are already used to doing that, this app will probably work fine for you. So I’ve deleted the app and have decided I will look for another app to browse Reddit with. Now my battery is at 80% at noon.

### 3/5 — Used to be my go app for reddit but things are changing.

*2020-04-23, version 3.6.4*

I used to love this app over the official reddit app in a lot of ways I prefer it but idk maybe the last few updates certainly the last two months or so I've been finding myself running into issues with the app that I didn't before.
Main issue is when I click on the audi button for a .reddit video and go into the subreddit the audio keeps playing and it Continues to play audio even if I play a new video. It takes me leaving the orignal audio post and turning it off leaving the post then go back into It without clicking the audio button.

Another annoying issue is when I go to my subreddits list a custom list never survives so I can't do that and when I do hit sort alphabetically it'll do half the list correct then for whatever reason it'll start over from A again so weird.

I still love the app the ads for me aren't annoying, it still works for the most part and the layout is just cleaner.

**Developer response:** We have always had interstitial ads. For years. The issue is that the former ad mediator we've been using since the launch of the app went out of business, requiring us to switch to a new one. The new aggregator is filling the interstitial at a much higher rate (though the frequency isn't actually any higher - you just see it more because it's actually filling). Because of this, we reached out and asked them to please reduce the frequency way, way down. It should be significantly better now.

### 3/5 — It’s... Ok

*2020-03-13, version 3.6.3*

Ads are too much. When scrolling you see an ad every 7th post and a stationary ad at the bottom, which is distracting and ruined this app for me. Also not liking what people are saying about the new terms and policies.

I’ve used BaconReader for years and haven’t used any other app. But the little annoying things added up! I want to support this, but I’m going to switch apps.

### 2/5 — New “terms of service “ agreement

*2020-01-04, version 3.6.1*

I used this app every day. But when I opened it this morning, this very long, highly legalese, document opened which required me to either “agree” or “disagree “ with what’s in the document. I clicked on “disagree”. No way would I agree to all that garbage. I was perfectly willing to never use the app again.

Humorously, though, clicking on “disagree” did nothing but cause a message to pop up that said I must “agree” in order continue to use the app. This happened repeatedly. Well then, why have the “disagree” button? Duh!

So I deleted your app. Too much legal mumbo-jumbo.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Avoid: Clunky and not user friendly for iPad

*2022-08-22, version 3.9.5*

I use BaconReader on my phone and it’s not terrible. Got it on my iPad and it is awful. 80% of your screen is forced to have a random post opened while the small bar on the side is all you can use to browse posts. There are no options in the settings to remove this and no way to close a post so you get the first 2 words of posts in small boxes to the side while the rest of your screen is just one giant post from whatever is the top front page at the time. There needs to be an option to scroll through it like you would your phone and open posts only when you want to open them.

### 1/5 — Used it for years but it has gone downhill

*2021-04-07, version 3.8.0*

When I first used the app, the ads didn’t work. This was perfectly fine - the user interface was easy to use and navigate through. Back then I would have given this app 5 stars.

Recently, the ads have become more intrusive. They pop up on their own while scrolling and open up even when I don’t tap them. I’ve also been experiencing the app freezing up, crashing, or stalling for up to one minute.

Skip this app. The official Reddit app, while flawed, is still a better alternative to this one.

### 1/5 — Obnoxious pop-up ads

*2021-01-26, version 3.7.8*

I’ve been using baconreader as long as I can remember (around 6-7 years). It has been my favorite app for browsing during that time. Recently however, the sensitivity of the ads has gone way up. I can’t touch that part of the screen while scrolling without the app opening up the ad in my browser and then glitching and opening up in a second browser. This is extremely disruptive to my experience. I am setting a calendar reminder for the first day of March. If the issue isn’t fixed by then I’m permanently deleting baconreader and finding another app.

### 1/5 — This used to be my favorite reddit app

*2020-03-02, version 3.6.3*

Now that they’ve added the crossoosting feature with the latest update it is almost unusable. I can no longer open a picture in it’s own, I now have to navigate to the post page, then open the picture. And after I’m done I have to go back twice to go back to scrolling. That’s 4 taps for one post that used to take 2. And now it doesn’t even mark the post as read, so I’m reopening things I’ve already seen because anything that was cross posted never registers as read.

Idgaf about cross posting. Please just give me the option to turn it off, or make it less intrusive.

### 1/5 — Used to be a great app

*2020-01-02, version 3.6.1*

I used bacon reader for a long while, this was my favorite app for reddit until now. In order to access the app, you have to accept the new terms of use. This is the statement that’s most alarming of the new terms of use: The agreement contains a mandatory arbitration provision that disallows class actions, a class action waiver provision and a jury waiver provision.
This is not only alarming, it’s plain wrong. If the makers of Bacon Reader have a security breach on all of our personal info, we cannot take action against them. Not worth it at all. I’m not deleting this app, I’m just not agreeing to the new terms of use. If there is a breach of security, I will take legal action.

### 1/5 — Firced arbituation

*2019-12-31, version 3.6.1*

The app was great. It had been my favorite favorite 3rd party reddit app for years.

The newest update requires users to accept terms of forced arbitration which means that if bacon reader or its developer is ever at fault for something like a data breach that causes users identities or sensitive personal information to become public, users have no rights for any suit, class action law suit or any legal means against bacon reader. All those cases will be decided by an arbiter of their choice.

This is the last I use of baconreader and I hope other avoid this app as well.

### 1/5 — Crashes, overheats phone, slows all other apps

*2019-10-09, version 3.5.3*

For the last week now I've been having terrible luck with your app. My phone will slow to a crawl with BaconReader resting peacefully in the background, and only resume when I quit the app.

The app also crashes randomly 24/7 now. Any time you click on a picture it seems to crash.

Clearly this new release is horribly energy efficient. I can only speculate what resources your devs are using in the background that cause the phone to behave this way - but I'm not using your app until the next update.

### 2/5 — Latest Update Broke App

*2021-11-06, version 3.9.2*

The latest update has broken the app. When scrolling, the app now, seemingly randomly, stops allowing you to click on a post to view comments. I can go through 4-5 posts and then the app suddenly no longer allows me to click into any posts. It’s like it doesn’t recognize I’m clicking the post, but it will still recognize if I click the picture thumbnail, if there is one.

### 2/5 — Laggy and locks up/restarts often these days.

*2021-04-20, version 3.8.1*

Unfortunately the app seems to no longer be stable. Constant freezing and maybe it’ll catch the errors and allow you to continue but most times it stops working completely. It seemed to be related to the ads that get loaded in the story list when they change. The frequency seems to be often or maybe some timing issues are occurring. Regardless, the app has largely become unusable. Really hoping this gets fixed as I’ve really enjoyed the app for years. Will stick around a little longer, but without any improvements, I’ll have to remove this app....

**Developer response:** Hello CapcomBlue! Apologies for the delayed reply here! We have made a bunch of changes to block various bad ads in the past few weeks. Additionally, if the app is lagging, you might check r/baconreader subreddit to see if there is a solution there, or feel free to post in there if you are continuing to see issues!

### 2/5 — Serious lag issues

*2021-04-19, version 3.8.1*

App is slow to scroll and is delayed for every action. Scrolling and tapping is painful and basically unusable in current state. Opening a gif or video only loads sometimes now, I’ll occasionally open the same video three times or more before it plays.

Not sure if an update broke the app because it was fine a week ago but last few days have been horrible.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Not perfect, but I’ll miss you

*2023-06-14*

I’ve been using this app for Reddit for almost 10 years. It’s my favorite, least clunky way to view the subs I like and although it had some issues over the years, I’m going to miss it so much come July, and I just cannot get into the garbage official reddit app so I will be ending my long time with Reddit when Bacon Reader dies. I have a small hope it will hold out but considering the app hasn’t had any updates for 8 months, I don’t see bacon reader surviving. Farewell!

### 5/5 — The best reddit viewer

*2022-08-05, version 3.9.5*

I downloaded bacon reader while looking for a way to get Hot - Best - Top etc back on reddit home page. It’s the only reddit app I use now. Ever since reddit adjusted their main algorithm in July of 2022 my home page went from funny, fun, awesome to dominated by depressing, negative content. Now that I have found this app, the feed is fixed and back to the way it was. I’m so grateful! The pro version is the best few bucks you’ll ever spend.

### 5/5 — Love app but doesn’t work anymore

*2021-11-07, version 3.9.2*

Same issue as others. Latest iOS and can’t open posts after 3-4x. Force closing sometimes
temporarily fixes but app basically unusable right now.

Giving it 5 stars bc it’s a great clean app and I’ll
Assume this is a temp bug but it has to get fixed

### 5/5 — Better for “reading” subreddits than image/video based

*2021-09-08, version 3.8.9*

Pretty much the title. If you use reddit more so for reading articles and especially reading comments, this app is more efficient and useful for you. It plays video just fine but just doesn’t have the effortless feel you’ll get on the reddit official app.

### 5/5 — Veteran BaconReader user

*2021-06-09, version 3.8.3*

Been using BaconReader for 7+ years. Literally the best Reddit out there. Better than the official Reddit app. The only downside is it does not support Reddit live. Very minor complaint for the Reddit app that is better than every other Reddit app out there. Download it instead of the official and you will not be disappointed

### 5/5 — Wasted time writing a comment

*2021-04-10, version 3.8.1*

UPDATE: Thanks for fixing this issue :)

I was writing a comment and accidentally pulled down on the screen slightly causing the writing window to disappear and the written comment to be lost. This has happened to me multiple times.

Please turn off the swipe down gesture when composing or writing a comment. Apple clearly knows and doesn’t have this “feature” when writing a review of this app.

### 5/5 — Great Interface

*2020-10-29, version 3.7.4*

Made the mistake of updating the reddit app and it became clunky, ad infested, and overall unbearable. Had to find something else, tried several other apps, and Bacon Reader is easily and by far the best IMHO. Bacon Reader is clean, user friendly, and at $2 upgrading to Pro was a no-brainer. Very grateful to the devs -keep up the great work!

### 5/5 — Excellent!

*2020-08-05, version 3.7.1*

Seriously by far my most over the used app over the last 6 years and I have zero complaints. I paid for the premium version so no ads and it makes the experience a ton better. Also this has a one time payment unlike the Reddit official app which is a recurring monthly payment. This app is also much better looking and functions better than the official app. Use Google to search specific Reddit posts because the only function that doesn’t work well on this app is the search bar but that’s what Google is for anyway. Overall just an excellently simple and enjoyable way to browse Reddit.

### 5/5 — Worth the money!

*2020-07-01, version 3.6.6*

This is by far the best reddit app in the App Store, it is well worth the money to remove the ads. I've used all the others and this is by far the best way to browse reddit. Only thing I’d say I would like to see, is a system default theme option. I don’t like having to manually change the theme based on time of day, its the only app that I use regularly that hasn’t integrated this feature yet.

### 5/5 — Favorite Reddit Browser without question with one issue.

*2019-12-20, version 3.6*

Longtime user here, love the app so thanks. One issue I’m having is as a sports fan, I see lots of box scores for post game threads which are kind of a hassle to read right now. I’m sure I’m not alone in some of these formatting issues. Thanks again for a great app though.
