That would be great. Also, on the account list screen, when I click on any account I would like to see a starting balance at the very bottom of the transactions. This gives me a visual picture of the starting balance I had back then when I first started and the balance at the present time. I was looking for an app that allowed me to keep track of all my spending accounts without charging me a ridiculous fee or making me sit through multiple ads. Imagine my surprise when it even let me keep track of my savings accounts! This app made the difficult task of budgeting a bit easier. I’ll be looking for another more functional app. ### 2/5 — Simple Checkbook App With Some Limitations *2026-01-28, version 2.8.18* I’ve been using another app similar to this one, but it’s missing two features I’ve realized I really need. So I decided to look for other simple apps for balancing my checkbook without syncing my accounts, and that’s how I landed on Balance My Checkbook. Pros: The app looks nice and clean, which I appreciate. One standout feature is the ability to search transactions by name, amount, type, or note. That’s something my current app does not offer, and it’s genuinely useful. You can also filter transactions to view all, cleared, or uncleared, which makes reconciliation easier. Cons: On the main accounts screen, the app shows a total balance across all accounts, but there’s no option to exclude certain accounts from that total. This is inconvenient if you want to track savings but not have it counted as your available balance. There’s also no reporting to show how your money is being spent. Traditional spending categories like groceries or household do not exist. There is a “type” field (cash, check, debit card, deposit, etc.), and you can create custom types of your choosing, so you could technically use this as a category system. However, transactions cannot be split. If you buy groceries and a coffee maker in one trip, everything has to be assigned to a single type. And since there’s no reporting, using types as categories does not actually help you analyze your spending. Recurring transactions and several other basic features are locked behind a subscription. This includes unlimited accounts, ad-free use, data export, lock screen protection, and scheduled transactions. The subscription options are Premium with Backup at $1.99/month or $22.99/year, and Premium with Sync at $4.99/month or $57.99/year. For a checkbook app, that feels expensive. Overall: While the app looks good and has a few features I really like, especially search and filtering, the lack of reporting, limited categorization, and subscription pricing make this a hard pass for me. ### 5/5 — Most Useful App I Have *2026-01-02, version 2.8.18* This is an update after several more years of using this, and briefly trying another app because it had a slicker looking interface: this is still the best check register app available. It’s simple, intuitive, and accurate. Original review: If I could give this app 10 stars I would. I’ve been using this for several years and it is by far the most useful app I have ever had. If you are at all interested in keeping track of your money you need to have this app, and it isn’t at all complicated. An added bonus is the user support, I did have an issue a couple of years ago, and the app developer was as helpful as he could be in helping me to resolve the issues. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — New Ads Format *2026-06-23, version 2.8.21* I recognize that revenue is necessary to support the app, but the number and frequency of ads have gone too far. Also, the links for giving a review or communicating with the developer do not work. If you have this app, I would be very cautious of using the cloud backup. I have since moved on to a different app to keep track of my balance and have yet to have any issues. I understand things can get busy and immediate responses aren’t usually possible, but after 4 months you can’t possibly expect someone to keep an app that fails to keep accurate track of funds. Frankly it’s insulting. I used this app for a few years to keep track of my expenses, as that is what it’s for. I kept having random discrepancies between what my ledger said and what my bank account said. At first I thought I was just putting in the numbers wrong. Recently I downloaded a different app to see if I was entering things wrong. Turns out this app is occasionally wrong with its math, sometimes by a few pennies, other times by significantly larger sums. Checked and double checked that I entered things the same way in both apps, and the other app has yet to be off. I’m sure there are others who have experienced similar issues, and no disrespect to the makers of this app, but I can’t afford to have these discrepancies, overdraft charges and all. ### 1/5 — Not always mathematically correct *2025-04-12, version 2.8.11* The last few months, it’s been a challenge keeping track of my finances and what is going to clear. I appreciate that it focuses on account management and future transaction planning without trying to become an overly complicated budgeting system. I use the scheduling feature extensively to enter future bills, expenses, and planned transactions. It helps me see my true available balance and stay ahead of upcoming obligations. The interface is clean, simple, and easy to learn. My biggest feature request would be enhanced bank synchronization. Ideally, I would like the app to sync automatically with my checking and savings accounts while allowing me to continue manually entering future transactions. When an actual bank transaction posts, it would be great if the app could automatically recognize and match it to the scheduled transaction and then clear it from the register. That would provide the best of both worlds: the simplicity of a traditional check register with the convenience of modern account syncing.
