## What is Ballbank?

Improving roadway safety, one curve at a time.

Designed with precision, easy to use, and beautifully crafted, Ballbank is a digital inclinometer used for determining advisory speeds for horizontal roadway curves. It measures, in degrees, the combined effect of superelevation, vehicle roll, and lateral acceleration. For decades, the ball bank indicator method is one of the most commonly used methods by engineers worldwide for determining driver discomfort that correlates to setting the advisory speed.

Setup your phone on your dashboard like you would typically setup a ball bank device. Press Start and drive. No need for a second person to write down the results. Ballbank records all of the data that you need and saves it as a video directly to the Photos app. The raw data, including all of the curve data results, is saved as a text file. The text file can be exported and emailed.

Ballbank not only shows you the continuous angle reading and speed, but calculates the maximum smooth angle, average speed, and lateral g force for every curve. Linear distance, lat/long, altitude, date, and time are all recorded too. The map makes it easy to see exactly where all of the data was collected.

Ballbank records the video of your drive, which allows you to evaluate the driver performance on every curve, document all of the existing signs, assess the site safety, and verify pavement conditions that could impact the results of your testing.

Both Imperial and Metric units are supported.

### 4/5 — Issue with Exporting Data

*2022-09-27*

First off, I’ve really enjoyed using this app. I’ve only run into three issues while using it. The first is when trying to export the data files. I had the files selected and clicked the export button, but nothing happened. I realized that the issue was I had deleted my “Mail” app that came installed on my phone. Once I reinstalled that “Mail” app the export button worked and I was able to email myself the files. The only other issue I’ve had is how the data files are organized. It looks like they’re sorted by time of day, which can be confusing when you have multiple days worth of data. It’s tricky to go back and remember which location was started at what time and day. Maybe there could be a way to give the files a name and then sort based on that or at least sort by date and not time. Lastly, it seems like when I export the files there are multiple readings at a single location. Specifically, it looks like there are 10 readings per coordinate pair, where everything is the same between the readings except for the Ballbank value. All of this extra data makes the post-processing kind of annoying. With all of that said, it’s definitely the best Ballbank app that I’ve found. Thanks for making it!

**Developer response:** Thank you for the feedback. The default Mail app was the only export option, but more options have been added in the latest version.

The readings save at 25 per second in the files. Essentially you can append the time stamp in 0.04 second increments to achieve the differences. I will explore doing this automatically in the export.

### 3/5 — Seems to be great.

*2022-08-23*

Data collection and video functionality appears to work great. I am having issues exporting the data to a text file. The screen will let me check the files I want to upload but when I press the button nothing happens.

**Developer response:** The app was using the default Mail app to export files. More options have been added in the latest version.

### 5/5 — Excellent alternative to analog methods

*2022-07-08*

I use this app all the time. It has saved me a lot of time performing curve speed advisory reviews. We have compared the results with our analog ball bank and found they both correlate very well.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your review!

### 5/5 — This App is Awesome

*2021-02-06*

I’ve need a ball bank indicator for decal projects and was excited to find this app. It works great!

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review!

### 4/5 — Hit and miss

*2019-11-06*

It works well enough so long as you remember to select the save option. It may have a fault in the programming in that it only fills in the averages box (bottom left) for the first run, subsequent runs you have to watch. OK, that’s no different to doing it old school, but you still get data and still have a file to refer back to.

**Developer response:** The averages will reset each time a new run is started when pressing the record button. Regardless of the video being saved or not, the raw data of every run is saved in the app. The curve averages will all be listed at the bottom of the text file.

### 4/5 — Grest functionality- power intensive

*2019-04-10*

I really like the ability to video a ball bank run - but you need to have a power cord if you intend to Do more than a couple of curves - I used 30% of my battery in a half hour

**Developer response:** Yes, the app is power intensive. It uses the highest accuracy GPS along with the accelerometer, magnetometer, camera, and 3D graphics at the same time. It is recommended to plug it in while using. If you don’t need the camera, turning it off will conserve energy.

### 3/5 — Great app but having functionality issues.

*2017-10-24*

Incredibly useful app. But stopped working for me unfortunately. After a few test runs when I click record, the app is unresponsive. Also within saved data when I hit export, again, unresponsive. On test runs I had hit save, and it seems the videos are nowhere to be found. Running on iPhone 7 with iOS 11.0.3. Any advice would love to use this app if I can get it to work.

**Developer response:** Often times, a full power down and reboot of your phone will fix an unresponsive app. There were also some issues when iOS 11.0 came out. Apple has fixed some of these bugs since then. Try again with the latest iOS version. If you continue to experience problems, please feel free to send a message on the Facebook page. Thanks!

### 5/5 — Ballbank Ap The future is here - thank you

*2017-05-17*

Finally - an easier way to get ball bank data on curves. Anyone familiar with the FHWA methods for estabilishing advisory speeds knows the difficulty in keeping the vehicle at a constant speed, while trying to reading a moving target (the inclinometer or ball bank) and all of the other inherent possibilities for inaccuracy. Of the 6 FHWA methods for setting advisory speeds, 4 relate to or directly involve a "ball bank" (or inclinometer reading). By the way, the FHWA really needs to update their procedure explanations - they reference out of date software, and who uses the TTI Compass Method - as if ballbanking isn't hard enough without taking measurements 1/3 and 2/3 thru a corner)This ap not only records the run, but displays (and importantly saves the data) on g- force, max angle, and smoothed angle. (Although, I would like to learn more about the "smoothing" used)

Because this Ap has the ability to record a video of each "run" going around a particular corner, it gives us the ability to go over and document which increases accuracy.

I don't usually do reviews, but this is definitely something that the iphone-ipad allows us to leap frog our technology forward (sort of the way the robotic station in surveying has changed surveying).

I compared this ap data to a Riekers inclinometer - it was easy because I could record the Riekers in the video on the dash with the ap and compare directly. While the readings weren't exactly the same they both gave the same conclusion for the particular curve I was tasked at looking at (i.e the curve needs a 30mph curve warning sign).
Thank you Christopher Dry - whoever you are.

The only bad thing is that I would get strange reading every once in awhile - so maybe there are some updates in future?

**Developer response:** Thank you for such a thorough review! If you see a strange reading once in a while, please feel free to send me a message with more details on the Facebook page so I can continue to make improvements.

### 1/5 — Why no iPad 4

*2017-04-12*

This is a really useful app, but why is the iPad 4 not compatible with it? it'd be a lot more useful to me if it was.

The same can be said for the
VCAP-Photo/Video app.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review. It is compatible with iPads with cellular. The iPads with wifi only do not have a gps in them.
