### 2/5 — Links are very frustrating

*2025-01-23, version 8.1*

Clicking on push notification, or even a link within an article to another article, opens an in-app browser window instead of just taking you to the article on the app itself. That browser window then prompts you to log in to read the article despite being logged in on the app! What’s more, you will be prompted to log in AGAIN every time, and information is not saved. Very frustrating and basically makes the (otherwise seemingly decent) app useless compared to just logging in on a browser app and using the mobile site.

### 2/5 — It’s better than the old app

*2022-10-15, version 8.1*

The overhauled app is definitely better than the old app, but to be honest, the mobile website is still better. For each section on the home page, you see 3 actual news articles and 1 sponsored content (ad disguised as news). Between each section there is also an ad. So quick math on that: 40% of what you see are ads. This is even for a subscriber.

### 1/5 — App is Glitchy

*2019-06-13, version 7.1.263*

Currently the app is not working. Won’t go beyond the loading prompt. Even on its best day, they’ve manipulated ads into what look like legitimate news stories. TOO MANY ADS!!! Just give us the news.

### 1/5 — Bangor daily news

*2019-06-12, version 7.1.263*

ABSOLUTLY THE “PITS”. Waste of time downloading this app !!!!!!

### 1/5 — Fake News

*2019-05-17, version 7.1.263*

Too liberal

### 1/5 — Please fix this app!

*2019-03-27, version 7.1.263*

I hope the IT people at the BDN read this review.
Print news, the lifeblood of our republic, use to be fairly portable not to mention, once purchased, could be opened and closed repeatedly without highly infuriating and distracting instability. Unfortunately not so on a tablet with this current digital version. As a lifelong BDN reader (50 years+) it sure is discouraging. Despite my being a “digital non-native”, this crusty old “Downeaster”is unlikely to seek out an old school paper version, even if I could find a store that sells it!
I can’t even access customer service to find out why let alone enjoy and participate in a, finally welcoming, moderating BDN voice in the comment section through my Discus account. Please fix this!

### 1/5 — Worst app ever!

*2019-03-22, version 7.1.263*

Come on guys, why even bother? It was terrible before and it is terrible now. Can’t find anyone who knows how to write an app that works?

### 1/5 — Needs improvement

*2019-03-20, version 7.1.263*

Slow gets hung up a lot

### 3/5 — Read, repeat...read repeat

*2018-10-26, version 7.1.263*

I do enjoy the writing in the BDN. My problem is with the app. You read a story, scroll down, and there it is again, and again, and....

### 1/5 — You need help with mobile apps

*2018-10-16, version 7.1.263*

Awkward and buggy design

### 2/5 — What happened?

*2018-10-04, version 7.1.263*

Used to be a lot more content available.

### 1/5 — Only gets more buggy with ‘improvements’

*2018-10-02, version 7.1.263*

Used to be decent as an app but almost constant changes in software make it impossible to use. As a news organization the BDN is hugely and unabashedly biased. The writing also strongly suggests most staff are not only not from central Maine, but not even from Maine or familiar with its people or issues. IE it’s primarily a propaganda rag.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Decent paper, mediocre app is a joke

*2024-07-09, version 8.1*

I’ve been a paying subscriber for several years, because I believe local newspapers are crucial to our society and the BDN is a decent, if not exactly excellent, local paper with an important mission.

That being said, this is the worst app I’ve ever used…for anything whatsoever. Holy cr@#. It seems like this was written by an employee’s kid as a summer project about five years ago…and never updated or improved since. Search is a joke, comments are a joke. formatting is a joke…. Come on BDN! How can your readers take you seriously when you can tolerate this app representing you?!

### 1/5 — Good luck trying to use it

*2024-06-28, version 8.1*

I pay for a BDN subscription. Every time I open the app, it makes me log in to read an article. Every time I log in, I select “stay logged in”. Even though it shows that I’m logged in, every time I select an article? It tells me I’ve reached my limit of free articles and I must log in. Which I can’t do because… you guessed it. I’m already logged in.

### 1/5 — Needs work

*2024-01-10, version 8.1*

Keeps locking up and screen goes black. I have to get out and start all over. Very frustrating.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work in Europe

*2022-10-26, version 8.1*

I’m paying for a subscription but the application isn’t working in Germany. What’s the point?

### 1/5 — No Local Top News

*2022-09-19, version 8.1*

Until they replicate the top local news like on the website, I won’t use the app. Tons of news stories on the website that aren’t on the app!

### 1/5 — App Won’t Open

*2019-06-17, version 7.1.263*

I enjoy reading the Bangor Daily News and have subscribed for almost a year now. All of a sudden, the app has just stopped working. I’ve deleted it and downloaded it again. Still won’t work. Seriously disappointing.

### 1/5 — Used to be a great app

*2019-06-16, version 7.1.263*

Now it will not work at all; does not start. I’ve reinstalled multiple times with zero improvement.

### 1/5 — Terrible now

*2019-06-15, version 7.1.263*

Update 6/15/19 The app no longer works at all. Just a black screen that says "Bangor Daily News" on it. And I'm paying for digital service for this?! Shameful.

Two months ago: Now that I pay for digital access, it would be nice to have an app that works. It freezes up while reading a story, so I can't navigate out of it. Spam ads pop up regularly, either telling me I'm the lucky winner of a new Something Special, or my iPhone has been compromised and I should "click here" to fix it. This only happens when using the BDN app. On the iPad version, I can't scroll down to continue to read; when I try it goes back to the beginning of the story, repeatedly. Why am I paying a monthly fee for this crap? I'm stupid, I guess, but not stupid enough to "click here" to fix it.

### 1/5 — App not working

*2019-06-15, version 7.1.263*

With my iOS upgraded recently, the BDN app will no longer open. Have tried deleting and reinstalling multiple times with no success.

### 1/5 — Will not open

*2019-06-15, version 7.1.263*

The app does not open any more. It used to be a nice user friendly app. During this entire week, when I touch the BDN icon, all I get is a green screen with the BDN title at the top. I expected this to be a temporary problem, but it is still on-going... nothing but a big green screen on my iPad.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Real journalism

*2019-03-30, version 7.1.263*

I’ve subscribed for more than 40 years and always felt the BDN to have a balanced approach to news. My one complaint is the loss of “ Non Sequitur”... hope you bring it back.

### 5/5 — Best newspaper in the state of Maine. No question hands down!

*2019-01-13, version 7.1.263*

Reliable and still have a staff of journalists.

### 5/5 — Pass Paperboy Review

*2018-10-22, version 7.1.263*

Having grown up and lived in Bangor for 35 years and now living in Orlando for the past 30 years, I enjoy viewing the BDN App. I do wish you would bring back the ability to search by city for Obits. Otherwise enjoy the improvements made over the past few yrs. Many fawn memories of delivering papers for 4 years thru rain, ice and Hugh snow storms but worst was going Collecting Saturday nights! Ha! Ha!

### 5/5 — Ugottobekiddin- unity, me

*2018-10-01, version 7.1.263*

Great paper- others charge where BDN doesn’t / it appreciated by we seniors , thank you

### 5/5 — Very local

*2018-09-23, version 7.1.263*

I love the local news articles. I also like the interest in the out doors, animals, and the history stories

### 5/5 — Great city of Bangor

*2018-09-18, version 7.1.263*

Enjoy reading about the home of Dow AFB and great people of Bangor.

### 4/5 — No comment sections

*2025-03-29, version 8.1*

This app is very readable and navigable, with a large area for articles on the screen, and it’s easy to navigate the topics. However, I downloaded this app hoping to be able to access and interact with the comment sections, which for some reason I’m unable to interact with in my browser. (I mean seriously, what is the BDN without the comment sections?) Sadly, this app shows NO comment sections at all. Anyway, I would recommend this app if you don’t care about the comments.

### 4/5 — It’s usually not “here”

*2018-10-30, version 7.1.263*

What’s goid for the front page apparently doesn’t warrant includion AT ALL in the app or on the website! Almost without exception, the articles that I want to share are NOT in the app OR on the website - and there’s NO [SEARCH] function. There are dozens of olf artickes tgat seem to remain forever. Sometimes, I can find the BDN article by Googling it, but often, not. It’s wicked frustrating!

### 4/5 — Easy to navigate.

*2018-09-14, version 7.1.263*

It is not clear how many free articles are available.

### 3/5 — Need to be able to send articles by email

*2018-11-10, version 7.1.263*

You need to make it possible to send individual articles to myself by email.
