I absolutely do not recommend it as a first time taker. Some of these outlines are a mess, the questions are really hit or miss, and the answers and response you get from some of the staff is even worse. Their practice questions aren’t even close in depth to MBE items. Again, it’s not a bad course if you just need to review for a second license etc. But I would not try to lean into this solely out of the gate. ### 5/5 — Enjoying my Bar Preparation very much *2023-12-29* I was upset I did not pass my first time. I decided to go all out and give myself a chance to succeed. I really want this and I still have to write my essays but so far I am enjoying the lectures and multiple choice questions so far! Their app is awesome for MBEs and what really helped me was being able to take specific subjects and focus on those rather than just take the questions as they come. They have a reasonable price on everything, including essay grading paid per essay and most importantly they never drop you. If you fail, you don’t have to pay again for the app. They care more about helping you pass than making money like some of their competitors. I also had a great experience with tutors at Barmax which really helped me bring it home to pass. I really appreciated what I thought was a convenient model. Unfortunately the app does not accurately track progress. In fact, up to about 40% of the time my progress isn’t reflected! I reached out to Barmax about whether there is some thing I can do to change this or to manually log my progress to keep track, and regrettably there isn’t. This significantly undermines the alleged convenience of the app. Had I known prior to purchase I’m not sure I would’ve gone with BarMax as keeping track otherwise is time consuming. I do hope this is a glitch Barmax prioritizes fixing. ### 5/5 — Almost perfect *2022-10-26, version 2022.08* Everything that really matters is good. Lectures are great and easy to follow, outlines are informative, practice questions are a must have. App is built to work best with tablets but I think there’s another level to get to in re: to annotating on the app. Would love to be able to use Apple Pencil to highlight and annotate in a way similar to Goodnotes. I also have problems with the app loading answers. It seems like they didn’t spend much money to make the app. It needs to be updated. I do like easy accessibility to MBE questions. It’s really nice to have them right on my phone since I have a toddler who makes studying difficult at times. Testmax used frivolous reasons such as usage from different ip addresses falsely to prevent my use of the app. Caveat Emptor. This is likely to end in court. ### 1/5 — Needs Improvement!! *2023-05-19, version 2023.09* Improvements needed to make it better: (1) When you listen to a lecture and stop before it ends, the lecture doesn’t pick up where you had left off. It opens up at the beginning of the lecture. Quite inefficient and you lose a lot of time that way. The lectures are helpful background; (2) The only speed for lectures are 1x and 2x. 2x is generally not usable since they talk way too fast and sounds like a foreign language. Be good to have 1.5x as well; (3) For some of the lectures it doesn’t cover the outline. The outline seems to have been more frequently updated than the lectures. Lectures are very helpful since they add background. Disappointed that they don’t update the lectures. Pretty pricey course to have these deficiencies. ### 1/5 — Never received product, can’t contact customer support *2023-01-06, version 2023.01* I purchased the product in October 2022 for the bar next February. Waited until December to start studying because that what their study schedule showed. When I tried to answer the essay questions they wouldn’t let me load. When I tried to answer the multiple choice questions the program stated I need to pay again. I tried the in app customer support and nobody contacted me back. I tried calling the phone number and it’s just and answering machine. You can’t leave a message because the answering machine is full. This might be a scam. I have submitted a charge dispute with my credit card company so let’s hope that works. ### 1/5 — Unable to login *2022-01-02, version 2021.17* I entered the exact same email and password from my computer onto this app. I am unable to login since it says they were invalid credentials. Please fix this app. ### 1/5 — DONT FALL FOR BARMAX!!!!! PLEASE!!!! *2021-02-27, version 2020.20* If Barmax was really that good, they wouldn’t be trying so hard to sell it to you!!! They are really good at technology and manipulating ads so that all that comes up when you do a search is BarMax. Anyone that’s familiar with websites and searches know that it’s an advertising tactic. If you notice, also all the websites that promote Barmax are somewhat biased. In addition, many 5 star comments here are from people that had yet to take the bar. You don’t see a lot of “I passed the bar” comments. Even their pass rates are misleading. They don’t reveal the year. They only average the pass rates over the years. Worst? They ghost on you near the Bar exam time and take ten years to respond to your questions. With that being said: I’m all for innovation but Barmax is only good as a supplement not as a main course for CALBAR. So please, unless you are an attorney sitting for the calbar OR extremely disciplined and don’t need answers to your questions quickly, you should consider an actual commercial bar review course or hiring a tutor. It’s important to track your progress effectively and get feedback. It’s also important to understand that there’s a lot of information you need to learn. So you need structure. Don’t go cheap and regret it like me. The bar is hard for a reason and anything that makes it seem easy or makes promises too good to be true will only work to hurt you in the end. March 26 Update from Feb 27 Comment Above - I switched from Barmax to Themis and already I can see the difference. For the first time in my bar prep I feel like I’m on track. And the best part is that I don’t need to dig outside resources outside of Themis to figure out what some rule means. Everything is so clearly explained in the lectures and their outline book is so detailed that I don’t even have questions. I can see why some of my counterparts that took Themis passed CA bar. Okay materials. *2024-11-13, version 2024.07* I took the CA attorney exam, so admittedly my task was more limited — just essays. I didn’t feel like I could navigate the app that well, although the lectures were generally helpful, as were the materials. I really appreciated the print materials I bought separately more, because I had something in my hand and they were largely good. BarMax’s materials did serve as a useful (more updated) supplement, and their lectures were nice to listen to while doing other things. Outside of BarMax, I purchased and used Mary Rasick’s red California Performance Test essay book and blue Essay Exam Writing text for much of my learning. That being said, I took the exam using those, without BarMax, and failed. My second time, a year later, 16 years removed from law school, I took three weeks off from work and got the BarMax package that included 10 private tutoring hours, and I passed. It was fantastic. I worked with Jennifer exclusively, and I feel quite indebted, because she walked me through ideas I didn’t understand, taught me practical test-taking techniques, reviewed numerous practice essays of mine and gave useful feedback, and did a host of other little helpful things. The live sessions and their recordings were crucial in the final 3 weeks of study in helping me remember and organize the countless rules in my head.
