## What is Baton?

Baton plays the music you host yourself. Point it at Navidrome, or any server that speaks the Subsonic API, and your whole library is on your phone: albums, artists, genres, playlists, search, downloads for offline listening, and a music friend you can ask for something to play.

No server yet? Try it anyway. The app connects to Navidrome's public demo server in one tap, and a built-in demo library plays entirely offline.

YOUR LIBRARY
- Albums, artists, genres, folders and playlists
- Search with a memory for where you went
- Downloads for offline listening
- Likes, ratings and play history that stay with your server

PLAYBACK
- Ten-band equalizer with presets, for the tracks you download; an experimental audio engine extends it to streamed music, and skips gapless and crossfade while it is on
- Gapless playback, on by default; crossfade as an alternative, switched on in Settings
- Lock screen controls, and AirPlay through the system player
- Widgets in six sizes, including Lock Screen and StandBy
- A Live Activity in the Dynamic Island while something is playing
- Ask Siri to play music, or resume it, without opening the app
- Sleep timer, and continue-where-you-left-off between devices

BEYOND THE LIBRARY
- Podcasts, subscribed on the server or by RSS on the phone
- Transcribe a podcast episode, and summarize it, using a host you run
- Internet radio stations, synced from your server
- Lyrics, with scroll-along timing where your files carry it
- Scrobbling to ListenBrainz and Last.fm, off until you connect an account
- A music friend you can chat with, powered by a model host you configure

MADE FOR SELF-HOSTERS
- Works with Navidrome and other Subsonic-compatible servers
- Pair with the Mac app by scanning a code; settings can follow you through your own gateway
- Clippings: audio your Mac read aloud and saved, collected through that gateway
- No accounts, no analytics, no tracking. The privacy policy fits on one page
- Open source under the MIT license. Buying the App Store build funds development

Baton needs a Navidrome or Subsonic-compatible server for your own music; the demo modes work without one.

## Version history (last 2 releases)

### 1.1 — 2026-10-05

The first update since Baton reached the App Store.

Setting up from a Mac now brings your music friend, your equalizer, your radio bans and your search history with it, then tests what arrived and tells you which of your server, friend and scrobbling accounts answered.

See what your music friend remembers about you in the Friend Log, each memory with the sentence you actually said. Swipe to forget one and it goes from your other devices too.

Later is on the phone: press and hold a song or an album to save it, and find it under Library.

Choosing Light in Settings gives you a light app.

Starting a track no longer throws you back to Home. Your listening history counts a track once you have actually listened to it. Podcast episodes on your server are no longer scrobbled as music. The Lock Screen progress bar stops when you pause, and widgets go quiet when Baton has not been heard from for a while.

A locked keychain now says so instead of sending you back to setup. Lyrics and album artwork say why they failed instead of pretending there was nothing to show. A crash while Baton was saving its download list no longer makes the downloaded library look empty.

Gapless playback is on by default. Every icon-only control has a VoiceOver label. Crash reports, when you turn them on, reach Baton's own crash service.

Baton asks once, after three days of listening, whether you would rate it. It never asks while you are trying the demo.
