### 4/5 — I Love this game but…..

*2025-06-13, version 1.14.13*

I grew up playing this game on a laptop sooo… you can imagine how excited I was when it popped up as a game recommendation. It’s great, just as I remembered. Except it doesn’t save my progress in the scenario I’m playing. If you close the tab or are gone to long
BOOM! ☄️🔥
It’s all lost.
I plan to keep playing and hopefully it will be fixed in the future. Great job otherwise 👍🏻

### 3/5 — Mechanics

*2025-06-02*

The core mechanic of lawful, chaotic, neutral with the day and night cycle doesn’t seem to work all that well, I’ve been playing this game for 10 years now and have repeatedly had my lawful units; which are supposed to attack better in the daytime, miss every one of 4 or 5 attacks or only land one, while the chaotic defender hits with every attack even in the daytime when they allegedly attack worse.

Terrain is also another issue, tactically speaking being in water limits movement, visibility, and weapon effectiveness. As being in water is tactically considered to be occupying low ground and thus a disadvantageous position; some disadvantages to occupying low ground, limited visibility, which can significantly obstruct your view of surrounding terrain and potential threats. It makes you more vulnerable to fire from enemies occupy higher ground, they can fire on you with greater easy and accuracy.

Lastly combat is based on a number of attack basis, for example an elf archer has 2 melee attacks, but if attacked by a unit with 3, the elf archer will only attempt to defend itself twice, when in reality nobody is going to stand there and let someone hit them freely, fundamental flaws in the system as a whole.

Plus I would like to see the loyal trait be applied to units once you’ve advanced them twice

### 2/5 — Not for phones

*2025-05-19, version 1.14.13*

This game looks really cool! I was hoping to overcome the control learning curve, but it is not intuitive. The tutorial text still shows instructions for computer based play. I may check this out on a computer and rate it higher there, but on a phone, it borders on unplayable. Developer- please respond if you update this game for touchscreen controls and I’ll be happy to change the rating

### 5/5 — Amazing game for ages.

*2024-09-05, version 1.14.13*

wesnoth has had many years of development on almost all major operating systems. It offers many campaigns and alot of replay ability. it is such a gem to have available.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2024-05-26, version 1.14.13*

You guys rock

### 5/5 — Great Game!

*2024-05-21, version 1.14.13*

This game has challenging campaigns, that will have you playing for a while! Or, if you get bored of the classic game, you can download new campaigns made by players very easily!

### 5/5 — Amazing Game

*2024-04-18, version 1.14.13*

A very well done game that brings me back to the classics. Great story and depth!

### 5/5 — Fun to play again

*2024-04-14, version 1.14.13*

I’ve played this on a laptop and the iPad, challenged myself to the hardest levels and won, a super satisfying achievement. It’s like chess and requires lots of strategy. Playing it it again years later it still holds up.

### 4/5 — genuinely great game

*2024-03-23, version 1.14.13*

played this a lot with my older brother as a kid and its nice i can still play it. only issue is the controls and how the game will randomly break sometimes. but everything else is really good. juet finished playing through yhe first two compaigns and i love the specific ways you have to train troops for later missions but st the same time you’re always sacrificing the majority of your troops to bring down your opponent, 4/5 would recommend but it is a little janky sometimes

### 5/5 — Excellent turn based strategy game

*2024-03-01, version 1.14.13*

Its perfect

### 5/5 — Probably the best mobile game on IOS

*2024-02-17, version 1.14.13*

Seriously. And I’ve played a LOT of crappy app games. And quite a few decent ones, and even a handful of good ones.

But if you’re into ANYTHING RPG, Turn based, real time strategy, if you EVER enjoyed anything like FFTactics, Ogre Battle, Kingturn, any of the Pathfinder or Baldurs Gate games, D&D or anything in any of those veins, this might just become your new favorite game too.

### 3/5 — Controls aren’t great, but also it’s got great potential on PC

*2024-01-07, version 1.14.13*

Played on PC, was great. However, this is 2 versions behind (latest is 1.16), and the controls aren’t great.

### 5/5 — Appears to be fixed - so 5 stars

*2024-01-06, version 1.14.13*

I previously posted a one star review as the save game function appeared to be broken. This now seems to work fine so definitely a 5 star review. A great mix of simplicity and complexity. Only completed the first scenario so far and it had a good wee storyline. Slightly fiddly to play on an iPhone (as it’s a direct port from PC) but fine once you get to grips with the controls.

### 5/5 — the best strategy game for free

*2023-12-20, version 1.14.13*

i wish this game will keep upgrade!

### 5/5 — Best mobile game out there

*2023-11-18, version 1.14.13*

Honestly, I love this game, I’m the kind of guy who spends 2-3k hours on total war games so I know what I’m talking about. It’s got a great mix of races, units, and load of campaigns. It’s quiet challenging at times too. The only criticism I would have is that I wish the units could evolve more than 3-4 times, but at the end of the day, it’s a free mobile game with many replay ability hours in it.

### 5/5 — First review and we’ll deserved of one

*2023-10-04*

My favorite game on the App Store. Easily the best strategy game I’ve ever played and deserves all the praise I could find for it. My actual only 2 complaints, minor though they may seem; would be the dragging to move units and the scale of the game itself. The game doesn’t fit well on my phone but I imagine it’s better on tablet. Unit movement is very meticulous and takes a LOT of getting used to. Other than that this game has LOADS of content and you’ll never get bored with it. Huge learning curve and will butcher you if taken lightly.

### 5/5 — Happy player

*2023-08-27, version 1.14.13*

Played this game since I was young - so glad to have a good port for the iPhone!

### 5/5 — So glad I found this!

*2023-08-22, version 1.14.13*

I played this game on my computer as a teenager and was stoked to find this in the App Store.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2024-02-13, version 1.14.13*

I’ve owned multiple versions of this game for iPhone. This one appeared to be a bit more polished from the screenshots so I decided to try it. Unfortunately it isn’t really playable. I can select units but if I click a destination to move to it simply selects that location instead of moving.

Also appears to refer to using the mouse/keyboard a lot rather than adjusting the text to fit the device.

### 1/5 — No save available

*2023-10-31, version 1.14.13*

This game seems pretty fun, I’ve never played it before, but it’s totally my style. The unfortunate thing is that I can’t save a game. It will save and let me load while I’m playing, but once I close it and come back later, all my saves are gone. There is no way to synch an account I can find or any customer service so hopefully I can get helped here. Really disappointed I was looking for a game just like this.

### 1/5 — Waste of time

*2023-03-26*

I’ve been looking for a game similar to the playstore’s Age of Strategy and this is as close as I could get. At first I was a little nervous about it because of the “random chance” that your soldiers will land a hit and vice versa for the opponents, and I was ABSOLUTELY right to be nervous because there is nothing random about it. Myself and anybody that I put on my team for an exhibition battle, gets absolutely slaughtered in any fight because they can only land 1/3 hits (same for any CPU or real players on my team) meanwhile the enemy lands every hit, regardless of the odds that the game gives you. I had an 80% chance to land 2 attacks and missed both. The enemy had 4 attacks at a 30% chance to hit and he lands every one of them!? It’s one thing that the enemy fights back when you attack, but not for it to take 3 people to kill 1 enemy. 100% NOT RECOMMENDED.

### 1/5 — Could be great

*2022-05-14, version 1.14.13*

If only you could save progress….without that it’s just an excellent use in frustration.

### 1/5 — Load games lost

*2021-12-16, version 1.14.13*

More than once, saved games disappeared. Would be 5 stars otherwise

### 1/5 — I love Wesnoth, but this version is not very playable

*2021-06-13, version 1.14.13*

I am a long time, big fan of Wesnoth. It is my go-to, a game that I always like to play. I have been waiting for the moment it was available on iPhone, and particularly when they’d be able to fix more of the bugs, etc.

This version, which I just paid to download, doesn’t really seem to work:

A. I hate the drag to move feature. I really miss the double tap. It’s nice to be able to zoom in and out, but not really at the expense of the double tap.

 B. It doesn’t seem to save any of my games. Any time I close the app, when I re-open, all of my saved games are gone. This pretty much makes it unplayable. I don’t know if there are any settings that can fix this. I don’t know if I’m running out of storage on my phone or something? Whatever the case, it isn’t obvious or easy for me to find. And the game is currently unplayable for me.

I love Wesnoth, but I regret downloading this recent version. Not sure how to get this fixed.

### 1/5 — how do games like this get 4.8 stars

*2020-03-17, version 1.14.11*

tutorial instructions are for a pc and not an ipad. graphics are very poor. Keep your money

### 1/5 — Unplayable in current form

*2020-02-16, version 1.14.8*

New to this game and wanted to give it a try but after struggling with it for 2 hours i am now writing this review. It seems like a fun game if it works but when I use the action drop down and try to recruit more often than not it will not activate the recruit menu and the other half the time I have to tap quickly over and over to get it to work. A lot of freezes happen when using the undo action and when trying to set up a multiplayer game. Overall I would have loved to play it but in this form it’s unplayable.

### 1/5 — Down not work

*2020-01-03, version 1.14.8*

The app loads but can’t move units on iPhone

### 1/5 — Major problem making game unplayable

*2019-03-17, version 1.14.4*

I love this game and have played it for 5 years. However with this new update whenever I press on local multiplayer (the best mode of this game) it starts the loading screen then the app exits and I go back to my ipad home screen. This needs to be fixed however there does not seem to be a way to report issues for IOS. Please fix this. When its fixed I will give this game the 5 stars it deserves but this issue takes the best part of the game away from me.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Thanks

*2025-07-05, version 1.14.13*

Wesnoth is one of my favorites because of its quality and lack of ads.

It is impressive how well this works on mobile and I like being able to play this on a phone.

Thanks for this great video game.

### 5/5 — Great turn based strategy

*2025-06-19, version 1.14.13*

Thank you to the developers for all your work! I played it on my PC years ago and was surprised there was an app. Lots of gameplay with the built in campaigns. I appreciate that it’s easy to browse and download add-ons.

### 5/5 — Great Strategy Game

*2025-05-28*

This game has just the right mix of chess, Lord of the Rings and DND. It has a simple but really intuitive combat system and has tons of hours of gameplay with mod support, scenarios and local gameplay. I love playing this game by myself (I love a good pass and play I can play against myself) with friends or family. I would say I think cross platform play (my computer with another computer) is a little hard to figure out. Also most of the games units are not recruitable in normal local games (units such as death knights and peasants) the only to access them is through mods like Era of Magic and Reign of the Lords. I would love more base game factions to be released in future updates and this is a really overall fantastic game!

### 5/5 — One of the best

*2025-03-04, version 1.14.13*

I played this game on my 1st Gen Ipad when it first came out years ago and I still find myself still going back to it. Easily one of my favorite games of all time, I highly recommend this game to any fans of strategy games. It’s worth $10 dollars or more and it’s free for countless hours of fun. I really appreciate the developers and all the hard work they put into such and amazing game.

### 5/5 — Fantastic game

*2025-02-19, version 1.14.13*

Fantastic, very well designed strategy game. Lots of helpful information in the in game help, wiki and reddit. Highly recommend!

### 5/5 — Great

*2024-12-26, version 1.14.13*

### 5/5 — Crazy that this game is free

*2024-11-28, version 1.14.13*

It’s awesome.

### 5/5 — Throw back

*2024-10-26, version 1.14.13*

I played this game years ago, 2007ish loved it then love it now. It the perfect mobile game! So glad it’s still being worked on

### 5/5 — good old school game!

*2024-09-24*

remember when you bought a game and that was it? well here it is. it’s really hard to find a game today that isn’t full of seizure inducing graphics and in app purchases. f all that. i want to buy a game & then (novel concept to follow) PLAY THE GAME. this does just that. i’ve been playing this for a decade plus. i put it down for a while to replay the total war games. when i came back i was delighted to find literally hundreds of add on games developed by fans all for free! i’m on my 3rd campaign & it’s been months. i can’t recommend this game enough. i wish more developers would go back to this old school model.

### 5/5 — Wesnoth is awesome

*2024-09-10, version 1.14.13*

I appreciate Battle for Wesnoth supporting Apple macOS and iOS. The music is lovely. This game is very fun and gives me hope that people can set aside their differences and make life enjoyable for everyone. There are commercial games that wish they had the quality of Wesnoth. Zero cost is great and free open source is also. A colossal amount of work went into this video game and it shows. Thanks very much!
