## What is Becoming Catholic?

You said yes to something, or you are close to it, and now there is a room
with folding chairs and a word you have never heard before. Everyone else
seems to know when to stand.

Becoming Catholic is a companion for that year. Not a course, and not
homework. Something to open on the walk in, and on the harder nights.

Learn the prayers, a rung at a time.

Fifteen prayers — the Sign of the Cross, the Our Father, the Hail Mary,
both Creeds, the Act of Contrition, and three in Latin. Each one climbs a
five-rung ladder: read it, fill the gaps, put the lines back in order,
practice from first letters, then put the phone down and say it cold.
Nobody hears you get it wrong.

Know what is happening at Mass.

Twenty-nine moments from the entrance to "Thanks be to God", each with what
is happening, what it means, and whether to stand, sit, or kneel. Read
ahead on the drive over, or look one up quietly in the pew.

Keep your own record.

The parish will ask for your baptism date, your sponsor, your confirmation
name, and dates you will be asked for again for the rest of your life —
Acceptance, Election, the Scrutinies, Baptism, Confirmation, First
Communion. Write them down as they happen, in a record that looks like a
document rather than a form. It stays on your phone. It is not uploaded
anywhere, not to us and not to your parish.

Find your confirmation name.

Three questions about your life, then the saints whose lives answer it,
ranked by how closely. 128 of them, with the parts nobody puts on a holy
card. Most were not born good at this. Several resisted it for years.

Ask what you cannot ask out loud.

Type the question you are embarrassed to raise in the room. It saves to
your phone. If you want, send it to us without your name and we will
research it or bring it to a priest. Eleven long answers are already
written, on suffering, on doubt, on divorce, on feeling nothing at Mass.

Before your first confession.

A walk through the Ten Commandments and the Precepts, then plain words for
saying it out loud. Nothing you tap is stored — not on the device, not
anywhere. Screenshots are blocked on that screen, and leaving it erases
everything you marked.
