## What is Bells of Peace?

This App is in support of a national bell tolling initiative called "Bells of Peace" that takes place on 11/11 at 11am local time to honor all those who served and sacrificed in WWI.

“Bells of Peace” is an opportunity for you, your family and friends, your organizations, and your communities to remember this pivotal moment in our Nation’s history when on the 11th hour (local) of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 the guns fell silent and the fighting ceased on the Western Front.

Ways that You Can “Toll the Bells”
Any bell will do! Many organizations and individuals have tolled “Bells of Peace” with bells ranging from church bells, to hand bells, to campus carillons, to firehouse bells.

No bell? No problem!
This “Bells of Peace” Participation App allows you to select from a number of different bell sounds. It counts down and if you and your commemoration community all have the app open and set to auto toll, the phones will all toll together at 11am local on November 11th.

You can also toll the bells manually and/or use the App for any commemoration and remembrance.

But it is more than that. The App will aggregate any social media posts from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. If you tag your post with #BellOfPeace it will come into our management dashboard and we will publish it into the App. We can't promise we will publish everything, but it is a great way to let everyone know how YOU and your organization remembered our Doughboys by participating in Bells of Peace.

Why This Moment is so Important
During the short 18 months that America participated in WWI (April 6, 1917 to Nov. 11, 1918), our nation went from a standing army of around 130,000 to deploying nearly 2 million men and women to Europe. It’s in honor of their service that we “Toll the Bells”.

No veteran should ever be forgotten… so this November 11 please take a moment to remember the 4.7 million Americans who put on the uniform for WWI; the over 200,000 that were wounded; and most of all, the 116,516 who made the ultimate sacrifice.

This National and international event is sponsored by the Doughboy Foundation, a non-profit 501C(3) foundation that is dedicated to keeping faith with the Doughboys and all those who served in WWI.

### 3/5 — Sound the bells

*2023-10-27*

I went into the app was already told the bells and nothing happened. This is his third year in a row nothing has happened. I follow the countdown to zero and then nothing. Are you disappointed try it again this year though.

### 1/5 — RAW DEAL 2 Years and Counting

*2020-11-11, version 3.0.1*

I thought this was a beautiful way to stop and reflect on all US Wars and Veterans, and most especially World War I. However, for 2 years, 2019 and 2020, my bells did not toll. My grandfather was a WWI Doughboy and I also have a great uncle Doughboy buried in France. This was beyond disappointing. I kept the app from 2019 and NEVER received any updates that maybe I need the 2020 version—did not know one existed. I have kept up with and received emails from the WWI Commission /The Doughboy Commission and no mention that the app was updated. Very pathetic.

### 1/5 — It didn’t do it’s one job

*2018-11-12, version 1.1.3*

I set everything up and was ready for it to ring at 11:00am and nothing happened. Disappointed :(

### 1/5 — Not a peep

*2018-11-11, version 1.1.3*

Absolute silence

### 1/5 — Not working

*2018-11-11, version 1.1.3*

App did not work on my phone. No bells tolled. Very disappointed.

### 3/5 — Sadly

*2018-11-11, version 1.1.3*

What a wonderful idea! I was so excited to be able to participate in this! I made sure my app was open and my volume was on. HOWEVER , it never rang out! What a disappointment!

### 2/5 — Didn’t work but...

*2018-11-11, version 1.1.3*

I loved the concept and downloaded it but it didn’t work. I allowed notifications when I set it up, and at 11:02 local time nothing happened. I chimed the cathedral bells myself anyway.

I’m from the Pacific time zone but am currently in Central time, so maybe it will go off in another half hour. Will update if it does.

### 1/5 — Didn’t Ring

*2018-11-11, version 1.1.3*

I installed this app and it was set to ring on 11/11 at 11 am. It didn’t ring.

### 1/5 — Bell did not till at 11 on 11/11/18

*2018-11-11, version 1.1.3*

Though I picked a bell and had it set to ring (Green), at 11:00 on 11/11/18, it did not ring, so sad. I have an iPhone, Verizon Service, and was in my same U.S. time zone though I was in Quebec, Canada, when my husband and I paused and waited to commemorate at 11:00.

### 5/5 — Great Cause!

*2018-11-03, version 1.1.3*

What an original way to honor the men and women who fought tyranny and oppression! A wonderful app that provides historical references, both legacy and current. You can also donate to this wonderful cause.
