## What is Benchwarmer?

Every player deserves their minutes. Benchwarmer counts them so you don't have to.

It's the twenty-fifth minute, a parent is asking why their kid is still on the bench, and you honestly don't know. Benchwarmer is built for that moment: a team manager for coaches who care that the minutes come out even.

FAIR PLAYING TIME, WITHOUT THE MENTAL ARITHMETIC
Benchwarmer works out each player's fair share of the match and shows you who is owed time, updated live as you make changes. The debt carries across the season, so the kid who sat out last week comes up first this week. Players who weren't available are never charged for a match they couldn't play.

LINE-UPS YOU DRAG INTO PLACE
Drop players onto a half-pitch to build your starting eleven, or your starting six. Every format from 5-a-side to 11-a-side, with formations generated for each one. Swap two players by dragging one onto the other.

A CLOCK THAT SURVIVES REAL LIFE
Lock your phone, take a call, or restart the app mid-match. The clock is rebuilt from timestamps rather than ticked along, so it still reads correctly when you come back. Nudge it by ten seconds when the referee disagrees. Quarters or halves, your choice.

GOALS, CARDS, AND THE SEASON TABLE
Tap a player to log a goal, an assist, a foul or a card. Goals nobody could attribute still count in the score, without inventing a scorer. Season statistics fold out of the match logs, so correcting a goal in March fixes the table in May.

TRAINING, NOT JUST MATCHES
Schedule your sessions ahead of time, then mark who turned up, who didn't, and who had a reason. Rate the players who came on effort, performance, attitude and teamwork, and watch each player's attendance rate and averages build over the season. An excused absence, for injury or a holiday, never counts against anyone.

BUILT FOR THE TOUCHLINE
Big touch targets for cold hands. A high-contrast mode for bright sunlight. One screen and no scrolling while the match is live.

YOUR DATA STAYS ON YOUR PHONE
No account, no sign-up, no server. Benchwarmer works with no signal at all, which matters on the pitches that don't have any. Everything lives on your device, and you can export a team to a file whenever you want to move it or keep a copy.

Free, with no ads and nothing to unlock.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.5.1 — 2026-09-12

• Fixed a problem that could stop the app from loading your teams and matches.
  • The close button on the match screen now always works.
  • Guest players' goals now count in the score on your match list and in your season totals.
  • Clearer messages when something goes wrong with your connection.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-09-07

• Plan every quarter, not just the first. Before kick-off, tap Q2, Q3 or Q4 above the pitch and drag the line-up you want for that period. "Copy from Q1" gives you a starting point
when only a player or two rotates. The fair-share badge shows projected minutes as you plan, so a gap that would open in Q4 can be closed on the drive to the ground.

  • Make the planned changes at the break. Between periods, the players who need to move show a marker on their token: on, off, or a new position. Drag them one by one, or tap "Make
N planned changes for Q2" and do them all at once. Undo covers it, as with any substitution.

  • Watch a match back. From the match log of a finished match, open Replay and scrub through the game. The pitch, bench, score and cards show exactly as they were at any moment,
with markers at every goal, card and period boundary and playback at 4×, 8× or 16×.

  • Correct a player's minutes. If you made a substitution in the app a while after you made it on the pitch, tap the player, choose "Adjust minutes", and step their total with −5 /
−1 / +1 / +5. Only that player changes, and the correction reaches back over every spell they played, not just the last one.

  • A clearer start. The first screen now says what Benchwarmer is for: fair playing time for every player, from the sideline. Build your squad, drag a line-up onto the pitch, run
the clock and share the minutes. Or see it all first with a sample squad.

  • How it works, on one page. Under Help on the Teams screen, every screen and gesture is explained in a line each. From a match, Match settings has "How the match screen works",
which opens the guide straight at the part about dragging, tapping, nudging the clock and undo.

  • Hints where you need them. The first time you open a match, the bench caption tells you what to do next: drag a player onto the pitch, tap a player to record a goal or card, drag
a bench player onto someone to swap. Each hint disappears the moment you've done it, and never comes back.

  • Smaller things. Changing the formation or the number of periods refits or trims the plans you've made rather than stranding them. Shared teams sync plans and minute corrections
like everything else. Backups carry the plans, and every older backup still imports.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-09-05

• Invite by link. Send it in any messaging app and it opens the team on
their phone. If a link gets mangled on the way, the code can be typed in
  by hand.

  • Anyone invited can run the match. Control of a live clock is taken over
in one tap, behind a confirmation naming whoever is holding it, so a phone
that dies at half time no longer freezes the game.

  • One clock, not two. The phone that loses a match stops straight away,
and both devices read the same elapsed time — including when the handover
happened while one of them was offline.

  • Your evaluations stay yours. Match and training ratings are visible only
  to the team's owner.

  • Fix a match after the whistle. Correct a scorer or remove an event on a
finished match and every statistic that depended on it follows.

  • Leave or stop sharing without losing anything. Un-share and the team
goes back to being yours alone, on your phone.

  • The home screen now keeps what is on this device separate from what has
  been shared with you.

Sharing is optional. Sign in only if you want it — a team you keep to
yourself still needs no account, and still works with no signal.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-08-27

Match ratings

You can now rate your players after a match, on the same four axes as a training session: Effort, Performance, Attitude and Teamwork. The app offers the ratings at the final whistle,
and if that's the wrong moment they stay reachable from the match log and from the finished match, so you can fill them in on the way home. Only players who got minutes are listed,
and every axis is optional — fill in what you can.

Season averages now appear on each player's screen and in match statistics, where you can sort the squad by rating.

  Fixes

  • Changing formation mid-match no longer strands your line-up. Whoever is on the pitch stays accounted for, and nobody loses minutes.
  • The bench now fits a full squad at the larger formats instead of overflowing.
  • The backup reminder can be dismissed again.
  • You can try a sample squad at any format, from 5-a-side to 11-a-side.
