Weitere MODERNSTES DENKMAL DEUTSCHLANDS 1959 steht am Ende eines langen kreativen Prozesses von Benno Elkan das Gips-Modell eines „Mahnmals für die Opfer des Bombenkrieges.“ Die Idee dazu kam Benno Elkan schon während des Kriegs, als er selbst Opfer deutscher Bombenangriffe geworden war, die sein Haus in London zerstört hatten. Mit Unterbrechungen hat er daran über ein Jahrzehnt gearbeitet. Es wird aber nicht verwirklicht, weder in Frankfurt 1954, noch in Dortmund 1959. Nach seinem Tod am 9. Januar 1960 gehört das Modell zu seinem unverkäuflichen Nachlass und gilt heute als verschollen. 2016 stehen am Anfang eines zweiten kreativen Prozesses, diesmal IT-gestützt, sieben schwarz-weiß Fotos dieses Modell, ohne Maßstab, ohne technische Angaben, mit kaum unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Beryn Hammil, die Enkelin des Künstlers, hat sie im schriftlichen Nachlass ihres Großvaters gefunden, der ihr 2008 übergeben wurde. Anlässlich der Widmung der „Benno-Elkan-Allee“ in Dortmund im April 2016 schlägt sie Dortmunds Oberbürgermeister Ullrich Sierau das Projekt „Benno’s Dream“ vor. Es sei der Traum ihres Großvaters gewesen, dieses letzte Werk in seiner Vaterstadt Dortmund verwirklicht zu sehen, so in einem Brief an seinen alten Dortmunder Bekannten Erich Leue.
