## What is Beresta?

Beresta keeps what you read and what you took from it: books, articles, highlights — and the notes they turn into.

BOOKS STAY FILES
Opens EPUB, FB2, PDF, MOBI and plain text. Importing copies: the file you brought stays where it was. Any book comes back out as a file under its real name through Share; on the Mac, "Save a copy of the library…" lays the whole library out as Author/Title folders. A book may hold several files at once — the reader picks the one that reads best, and you can pick another by hand.

HIGHLIGHTS YOU CAN TAKE WITH YOU
A quote, your own thought beside it, tags, bookmarks. On iPad, ink over PDF pages with Apple Pencil. All of it exports into an Obsidian vault as ordinary Markdown files rather than "our format": a person edits the note, not the program, and the next export will not overwrite what you wrote. There is a separate Obsidian plugin, open source.

SYNC WITHOUT SOMEONE ELSE'S SERVER
Beresta has no server of its own and no account. Devices exchange through a place you choose. To Backblaze B2 and WebDAV everything travels sealed: the key is derived from your passphrase on the device itself and stays with you. Through a folder — your own, a shared one, or one inside iCloud Drive — the files travel as they are: there the storage protects them, not Beresta, so pick a folder you trust.

A LIBRARY, NOT A FILE LIST
Authors, series, tags, nested shelves. Search by title and author everywhere; search inside the book you are reading, too; full-text search across the whole library on the Mac. Reading statuses and a reading log. On the Mac, import from Calibre brings covers and your own highlights along, and import from Zotero brings articles and notes.

ARTICLES FROM THE WEB
RSS subscriptions deliver articles straight into the library and store them the way books are stored: text, images and the original source. On the Mac a page can be clipped with the Safari extension — it ships inside the app, nothing to install.

ON ALL YOUR DEVICES
One purchase covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. Widgets: continue reading, and quote of the day. A nearby device offers to continue the book you started; if that is too much, one switch in settings turns it off.

WHAT BERESTA DOES NOT DO
No account. No analytics, no telemetry, and nothing leaves your device on its own. If something goes wrong, "Diagnostics" in Settings builds a report, shows it to you in full before anything is sent, and you decide whether to send it at all. No ads. It does not decide for you where your books live.

Keeping your own files is not about distrusting clouds. It is about libraries taking years to build, and apps living shorter lives than that.

A year of updates is included. After that you can extend for new features — or stay with what you bought: the app keeps working.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3 — 2026-10-09

Beresta now speaks German, French, Spanish, Italian and Kazakh

The app follows the language of your iPhone or iPad. To use a different language for Beresta alone, open Settings, find Beresta and choose Language.

These translations are new. If a phrase reads awkwardly, tell us through the support page, and we will fix it in the next update.

### 1.2 — 2026-10-08

Reading days in a row

Statistics now show how many days in a row you read, your best streak and today's bar: "3 of 5 min". You choose what counts as a reading day, from one minute to an hour, and it is the same on every device. Optionally, an evening reminder if today doesn't count yet.

New widgets

"Reading Days" on the Home Screen and the Lock Screen. "Daily Review" shows how many highlights are waiting. "Random from Antilibrary" shows one unread book from your shelf, a new one every day. "Continue Reading" now shows your streak.

Highlights from Readwise

Import a Readwise CSV: highlights go to their books, or to an entry in "To Find" if the book isn't there. Notes and tags come along, and importing again never duplicates anything.

Your own dictionaries

Add StarDict and DSL dictionaries and look words up right from the selection bar, offline. The list and its order sync between your devices.

PDF themes

Sepia, paper and night now work for PDF too, in the "Aa" panel.

Sync

A device updated later than its neighbour now receives everything the neighbour wrote with the new version.

### 1.1.3 — 2026-10-06

Volume buttons

If the volume buttons turn your pages, they now keep working after you come back to Beresta from another app, from Control Center or after locking the screen — no restart needed. Thanks to the reader who spotted it.

### 1.1.2 — 2026-10-04

Series

The series line in the book card opens the whole series: books in order, what you have read and what you have started. Mark a book as read and Beresta suggests the next unread one. Series come from the FB2 and EPUB files themselves and from OPDS catalogues.

How far you are

The book card shows a progress bar; a book made of several files gets one per file. Progress is combined across all your devices.

Statistics, closer

The statistics button sits right on the library shelf instead of in Settings. Charts use Beresta's own colours.

iPad

Daily Review, Highlights, Reading lists, the Golden shelf and the other sidebar items open again when tapped.

Small things

Tapping an entry in a PDF's own table of contents no longer closes the app. To Find and the Antilibrary pick up an edited book title straight away.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-10-03

Other libraries

Connect an OPDS catalogue — Calibre, Komga, Project Gutenberg — and browse, search and take books right in Beresta. Your password goes only to your own server. Connected catalogues sync between devices.

To Find

Books without a file: what you want to read, read on paper or are weighing before buying. "Find in catalogues" looks for a record in every connected library.

Antilibrary, in Taleb's sense

The unread books you own. Not a backlog but a map of what you don't know yet; "At random" opens one of them.

Kindle highlights

Import My Clippings.txt: highlights go to the book, or to its To Find record if you don't have it yet. Importing again duplicates nothing.

Reading statistics

Pages per day for a week, month and year, total time and pace, and "How I read it" in the book card.

Sync

Covers changed on one device reach the others; a network hiccup no longer damages the storage marker.
