There can be a bank of 15 bikes and not a single one works, despite the app saying 5 available. So you can’t plan around anything the app says. Bad tech, bad bikes, bad times, bad Beryl. *Updated my review to 3 stars, because when it works, it’s better Beryl. But please sort out all the busted bikes. ### 3/5 — Good but be careful *2026-07-08, version 2.66.2* Generally good service, been using them for years, spent thousands but unfortunately due to a mistake I made when I was younger where I tried to use someone other than mine’s ID to unlock a scooter, after they finally realized I am now forever banned from even using bikes which I relied on heavily to get around and to work, read the terms and conditions and don’t mess about, these people don’t give second chances. ### 1/5 — Waste of time *2026-07-06, version 2.66.2* Terrible app doesn’t work had me logging in and practically giving them my birth certificate just to get a bike! And when your trip ends and you lock the bike manually, it doesn’t end until you tell the app, which is slow and ineffective. The app also often fails to connect despite full signal. Number of bikes information doesn’t match with parking bays. Multiple time bike unlocked on app but actually it was locked. We locked the bike for about 15 minutes and got charged 12 great British pounds for NO REASON. I’m angry give me my money back beryl or else I will throw you down the barrel 😠😠😠😠😠. Period. Contact me for further information if you want to give me back my moolah thanks xx ### 1/5 — Awful *2026-05-15, version 2.63.4* Bikes don’t lock, overcharged each time, avoid ### 1/5 — Unreliable *2026-05-08, version 2.63.4* In Leeds at least, the rate of a bike unlocking after you've scanned it is less than 50% , and once you've managed to find one to unlock, about 1 in 4 will have some sort of malfunction. Not uncommon to find a bay with 5 bikes in and you have to scan them all before you find a functioning one ### 1/5 — Rip off *2026-04-28, version 2.63.4* Bikes are expensive and wont unlock half of the time. They replaced the bikes we had and charged waaay more. Terrible. ### 1/5 — App no longer works *2026-04-17* I used to love beryls and used them regularly when needed to get to my nearest train station quickly if I was running late. However, lately, the last 2 weeks it’s been awful, 3 times almost missed my train, kept charging me for minutes when I end the ride. All this because of the “something went wrong” error. I don’t know what happened since the latest update but something has gone terribly wrong!! I noticed it happens when I had the beryl app open on my phone, then did something else and opened it up again. If I want to contact customer service via the chat it shows “something went wrong” and it doesn’t go away until I close the app and reopen it again, and even then usually doesn’t work, I have to do this like 6 times or more to get it working. Beryl is great when you’re in a hurry but it’s so unreliable lately that I cannot depend on it, as I will my miss my train and then have to pay for another ticket! And we know how “cheap” train tickets are nowadays… beryl development team, please fix the issues as it makes your service totally unreliable and unusable and I won’t be using them again until this is fixed. **Developer response:** Thank you for sharing your experience. If in the unlikely even you can actually get on a bike, there a 99% chance that bike is not working properly and you have to pull over and try switch is with another bike. Since my city switched to beryl bikes they’ve been nothing but a pain. ### 1/5 — BAD APP *2026-03-18, version 2.63.1* bikes never unlock ### 2/5 — Extremely broken app or made to scam *2026-03-17, version 2.63.1* It’s a shame because I use the service regularly and the bikes are usually quite good it’s just the app. Like others have already said on here most of the time when I try ending a ride it will come up with “something went wrong try again” and the timer is still ticking while this is going on as well as the loading screens so if you turned you phone off after unlocking and then turned it back on to end it you’d have to wait for the “tips” screen to go away to end the ride. The bike locks though despite the error message so the ending the ride definitely went through. Makes it seem like it was designed intentionally like this.All this just ends up costing extra money or minutes and it piles up. They are really good at helping you and refund or just stop the timer when you arrived there but it is still quite inconvenient. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — The worst! *2026-08-14* As someone who takes bike shares and travels frequently, this was by far the worst one that I've ever experienced and the most complicated, with the worst user interface. From the beginning you download one app just for you to see, of course, whether there is a bike share near you in the first place. I figured I was in the city center by Piccadilly that there would be lots of options nearby me but you can't actually see if there are any bike shares until you put in your credit card information. That was strike number one. I put in my credit card information only to be told that I have to download another app to see where the bikes are. When you are traveling and in another country, data is usually at a premium. After spending a couple of minutes to download the first app just to put in my credit card information, I now have to spend another two or three minutes downloading another app just to see if there are bikes on the map. I then download the second app, which is the app that I'm commenting on now, only to find that it doesn't even geolocate you automatically to see if there are bikes nearby you. I see a map with what looks like hundreds of bike stations but I don't even know if any one of them is near me or where their distance is because it does not automatically geolocate me. I then click on "bikes near me" only for it to load and load and load and not move anywhere. Finally I just give up and call an Uber. ### 1/5 — No longer opens *2026-08-07, version 3.2.0* After the last update it just hangs on the splash screen and never opens. Latest ios ### 1/5 — Love but hate *2026-08-04, version 3.0.1* I really love using the beryl bikes but the app is very unreliable, when you try to end the ride it takes agesssss, by that the minutes keep losing just by locking the bike, it is the gps that doesnt update accurately. Would love you to fix this problem as it isnt just me thats happening to. You’d think they’d let you verify your license along with your passport that has a photo on it and cross reference with our DVLA driver number. 🤨 Prefer a 🛴 because the bikes 🚲 seats don’t stay up. Most of the time they simply don’t work. App is inaccurate and says bikes are available when they’re not. They provide me with great flexibility. Take cycling into town, for example . Obviously I could take my own bike and sometimes do. The advantage of a Beryl bike is that I don’t have to worry about the bike being stolen. Also if the weather turns bad I can take public transport back instead of cycling in the rain. I find the bikes comfortable to ride. There is a fantastic support service. What I mean by this is that occasionally there might be some technical problem locking or unlocking a bike at a docking station. There is always somebody available at the support service who can deal with the problem within minutes. You can buy credit bundles which makes the hire, already cheap, even cheaper. ### 5/5 — So easy to use *2021-09-22* It does what it says on the tin! I’ve used this app now with twoo very different phones now and it’s worked smoothly for both. The only issue I’ve ever had is writing this review - I can’t see the letters! The connection is fast and easy, the app picks up what bikes are where, so you know where to go to collect one. If there’s an issue, you can report a fault, and while I did get charged once for using a faulty bike I couldn’t even ride, just because I’d unlocked it, I sent a message and by the time I got to my destination I’d been refunded.
