## What is BibKit?

BibKit is a focused, modern citation manager designed for iPad.

FREE PLAN

Use every citation tool with a library of up to 10 references. No subscription is required to try BibKit. A BibKit Yearly subscription unlocks an unlimited library across iPad and Mac.

IMPORT REFERENCES

Import PDF and BibTeX files directly from the Files app. BibKit extracts available citation information and lets you review the result before adding it to your library.

LOOK UP PAPERS

Add a reference by entering any of the following:

• A DOI, such as 10.1016/j.mechmat.2019.103215
• An arXiv identifier, such as 2503.12692v1
• An arXiv abstract or PDF URL
• A HAL identifier, such as hal-01234567
• A HAL URL, such as https://hal.science/hal-01234567
• A ScienceDirect article URL containing a recognizable article identifier

For publisher pages other than supported ScienceDirect links, enter the publication's DOI instead. When an arXiv preprint has a published version, BibKit can present both records so you can choose the version that belongs in your library.

REVIEW AND EDIT

Inspect extracted metadata before saving. Edit titles, authors, publication years, journals, volume and issue information, page ranges, publishers, DOI values, arXiv identifiers, URLs, and citation keys.

ORGANIZE YOUR LIBRARY

Search your references, mark favorites, apply labels, detect duplicates, retain source information, and undo accidental deletions.

FORMAT AND EXPORT

Generate consistent citation keys, normalize BibTeX formatting, abbreviate journal names, format author initials, and export selected references or your complete library.

CREATE FORMATTED REFERENCES

Copy references in APA, MLA, or Chicago style when you need a formatted citation instead of BibTeX.

BUILT FOR IPAD

BibKit provides a native split-view interface designed for reviewing and managing citations on a larger screen. On supported devices, Apple's on-device language model can assist with extracting citation metadata from PDFs.

SUBSCRIPTION INFORMATION

BibKit Yearly removes the 10-reference library limit on both iPad and Mac. The subscription costs US$2.99 per year in the United States. Prices may vary by country or region, and the applicable localized price is displayed before purchase. An introductory one-month free trial may be available to eligible new subscribers.

Payment is charged to your Apple Account upon confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current subscription period. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your App Store account settings. Existing references remain accessible if the subscription ends.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.0 — 2026-10-07

Smarter search, easier filtering and a smoother everyday workflow, now designed for every screen size.

• Search finds references by anything written in them, and you can narrow the library by keyword or star.
• Your library stays in sync with your Mac through iCloud.
• Improvements to reliability and performance throughout.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-09-28

• iCloud sync — your library stays the same on your iPad and Mac, stored in your own iCloud account.
• Share from Safari — tap Share ▸ BibKit on a paper's page. BibKit looks it up and shows it for review; nothing is added until you tap Add.
• Collections — group references by project, show one collection at a time, and export just that collection.
• RIS and CSL JSON — import libraries from Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote, and export for other reference managers.
• Formatting — format author and journal names for all references shown, including Fix Capitalisation (IRONS → Irons) and Restore Full Names.
• Undo and Redo — buttons in the toolbar (and ⌘Z on a keyboard) undo editing, importing, formatting, deleting and more.
• Smarter imports — papers you already have are completed instead of added twice, clashing cite keys get a suffix, and an import report explains what happened.
• A much more faithful BibTeX reader and writer, including files that are not UTF-8.
• Work without pop-ups — every confirmation and message can be turned off in Settings.
• Safer library — if the library ever can't be opened, BibKit leaves it untouched and explains why, and starting over always keeps a copy first.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-09-19

More publishers resolve from a link
Paste an article address from MDPI, the Royal Society of Chemistry, or
bioRxiv and medRxiv and BibKit now finds the reference. These sites block
automated readers, so BibKit works the identifier out from the address
itself. Links to bioRxiv and medRxiv full-text pages work too.

Papers with a thousand authors no longer slow things down
Opening a large collaboration paper used to make the editor and the
reference details sluggish. Very long author lists are now shown in a
compact form and edited as a plain list, one name per line. Copy BibTeX
is unchanged and still includes every author.

### 1.0.6 — 2026-09-19

Fixed importing from ScienceDirect abstract pages — pasting a sciencedirect.com "/abs/" link now finds the paper instead of failing to look it up. Plus minor stability improvements.

### 1.0.5 — 2026-09-06

Improved journal formatting for Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). You can now switch reliably between the full journal name and its standard or minimalist abbreviation. This update also includes reliability improvements.
